      • Expression of bcl-2 and p53 in Induction of Esophageal Cancer Cell Apoptosis by ECRG2 in Combination with Cisplatin

        Aim: To investigate the mechanisms of induction of apoptosis of esophageal cancer cells by esophageal cancer-related gene 2 (ECRG2) in combination with cisplatin (DDP). Methods: Hoechest staining was performed to analyze the effects of single ECRG2 and ECRG2 in combination with DDP on apoptosis of EC9706 cells. The expression levels of p53 and bcl-2 mRNA and protein were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Results: The number of apoptotic cells after the treatment with ECRG2 in combination with DDP for 24 hours was more than that after the treatment with single ECRG2. RT-PCR and Western blotting showed that the expression levels of bcl-2 mRNA and protein were both down-regulated, while p53 mRNA and protein were both up-regulated in the cells treated with ECRG2 in combination with DDP compared with those given ECRG2 alone. Conclusion: ECRG2 in combination with DDP can enhance the apoptosis of EC9706 cells, possibly by down-regulating bcl-2 expression and up-regulating p53.

        Understanding the evolving academic landscape of library and information science through faculty hiring data

        <P>Using a 40-year (from 1975 to 2015) hiring dataset of 642 library and Information science (LIS) faculty members from 44 US universities, this research reveals the disciplinary characteristics of LIS through several key aspects including gender, rank, country, university, major, and research area. Results show that genders and ranks among LIS faculty members are evenly distributed; geographically, more than 90 % of LIS faculty members received doctoral degrees in the US; meanwhile, 60 % of LIS faculty received Ph.D. in LIS, followed by Computer Science and Education; in regards to research interests, Human-Computer interaction, Digital Librarianship, Knowledge Organization and Management, and Information Behavior are the most popular research areas among LIS faculty members. Through a series of dynamic analyses, this study shows that the educational background of LIS faculty members is becoming increasingly diverse; in addition, research areas such as Human-Computer interaction, Social Network Analysis, Services for Children and Youth, Information Literacy, Information Ethics and Policy, and Data and Text Mining, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning have received an increasing popularity. Predictive analyses are performed to discover trends on majors and research areas. Results show that the growth rate of LIS faculty members is linearly distributed. In addition, among faculty member's Ph.D. majors, the share of LIS is decreasing while that the share of Computer Science is growing; among faculty members' research areas, the share of Human-Computer interaction is on the rise.</P>

        Morphological Variation and Recovery Mechanism of Residual Crude Oil by Biosurfactant from Indigenous Bacteria: Macro- and Pore-Scale Experimental Investigations

        Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is being used more widely, and the biological contributions involved in MEOR need to be identified and quantified for the improvement of field applications. Owing to the excellent interfacial activity and the wide distribution of producing strains in oil reservoirs, lipopeptides have proved to be an essential part of the complex mechanisms in MEOR. In this study, crude lipopeptides were produced by a strain isolated from an indigenous community in an oil reservoir. It was found that crude lipopeptides can effectively reduce the IFT (interfacial tension) to 10<sup>-1</sup>~10<sup>-2</sup> mN/m under high salinity without forming stable emulsions, and the wettability of natural sandstone can be enhanced (Amott index, from 0.36 to 0.48). The results of core flooding experiments indicate that an additional 5.2% of original oil in place can be recovered with a 9.5% reduction of injection pressure. After the shut-in period, the wettability of the core, the reduction of injection pressure, and the oil recovery can be improved to 0.63, 16.2% and 9.6%, respectively. In the microscopic flooding experiments, the crude oil in membrane, cluster, and throat states contribute nearly 90% in total of the additional oil recovery, and the recovery of membranestate oil was significantly enhanced by 93.3% after shut in. Based on the results in macro and pore scale, the IFT reduction and the wettability alteration are considered primary contributors to oil recovery, while the latter was more dominant after one shut-in period.

      • Topological analysis of interdisciplinary scientific journals: Which journals will be the next Nature or Science?

        Identifying prestigious interdisciplinary journals is very significant for researchers. By publishing research works in prestigious journals, researchers can better propagate their works and get spotlights. Even though the quality of a papers is not represented by the journal that published the paper, it is a general concern of researchers that how to identify a set of good journals to submit their papers. Nature and Science are the two journals that have been considering as the two top interdisciplinary journals worldwide. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying journals that have the potential to become the next Nature and Science through topological analysis of interdisciplinary scientific journals.

        Peripheral nerve defects repaired with autogenous vein grafts flled with platelet-rich plasma and active nerve microtissues and evaluated by novel multimodal ultrasound techniques

        Background: Developing biocompatible nerve conduits that accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration, lengthening and functional recovery remains a challenge. The combined application of nerve microtissues and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) provides abundant Schwann cells (SCs) and various natural growth factors and can compensate for the deficiency of SCs in the nerve bridge, as well as the limitations of applying a single type of growth factor. Multimodal ultrasound evaluation can provide additional information on the stiffness and microvascular flow perfusion of the tissue. This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a novel tissue-engineered nerve graft composed of an autogenous vein, nerve microtissues and PRP in reconstructing a 12-mm tibial nerve defect and to explore the value of multimodal ultrasound techniques in evaluating the prognosis of nerve repair. Methods: In vitro, nerve microtissue activity was first investigated, and the effects on SC proliferation, migration, factor secretion, and axonal regeneration of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were evaluated by coculture with nerve microtissues and PRP. In vivo, seventy-five rabbits were equally and randomly divided into Hollow, PRP, Micro-T (Microtissues), Micro-T + PRP and Autograft groups. By analysing the neurological function, electrophysiological recovery, and the comparative results of multimodal ultrasound and histological evaluation, we investigated the effect of these new nerve grafts in repairing tibial nerve defects. Results: Our results showed that the combined application of nerve microtissues and PRP could significantly promote the proliferation, secretion and migration of SCs and the regeneration of axons in the early stage. The Micro-T + PRP group and Autograft groups exhibited the best nerve repair 12 weeks postoperatively. In addition, the changes in target tissue stiffness and microvascular perfusion on multimodal ultrasound (shear wave elastography; contrast-enhanced ultrasonography; Angio PlaneWave UltrasenSitive, AngioPLUS) were significantly correlated with the histological results, such as collagen area percentage and VEGF expression, respectively. Conclusion: Our novel tissue-engineered nerve graft shows excellent efficacy in repairing 12-mm defects of the tibial nerve in rabbits. Moreover, multimodal ultrasound may provide a clinical reference for prognosis by quantitatively evaluating the stiffness and microvescular flow of nerve grafts and targeted muscles

        Over-expression of StLCYb increases b-carotene accumulation in potato tubers

        Lycopene b-cyclase (LCYb) is involved in the first step of the b-branch synthetic pathway of carotenoids from lycopene in plants. In this study, to explore the possibility of regulating b-carotene synthesis via the b-branchspecific pathway in potato, StLCYb gene was first isolated from potato cultivar Desiree, and its open reading frame was 1503 bp long without intron. The protein sequence of StLCYb showed high similarity with that of LCYbs in other species such as SlLCYb1, CaLCYb, NtLCYb and ApLCYb. StLCYb was expressed in all tissues and the highest level was observed in tubers followed in flowers, and the lowest level was in roots. HPLC detected an about 1.5–1.9 times increase in b-carotene content of transgenic potato tubers, in which the gene StLCYb was overexpressed, compared with the wild-type control. Besides, the expression levels of carotenoid-related genes StPSY, StPDS, StZDS, StCHYb and StZEP transcripts in the transgenic lines were significantly higher than in the wild-type control, which implied a positive regulation in promoting carotenoid synthesis. All these results suggest that b-carotene content in potato tubers could be regulated by modulating StLCYb expression.

        AR model-based crosstalk cancellation method for operational transfer path analysis

        To reduce the crosstalk effects between the signals at reference points in operational transfer path analysis (OTPA) and improve the reliability of solutions, a novel OTPA method based on auto-regressive (AR) model is proposed in this paper. The key to this method is to obtain the power spectrum by AR model for estimating the prior transmissibility function matrix. Firstly, in view of the lack of noise reduction process in conventional crosstalk cancellation method, singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to reduce the noise of original signals. Secondly, Burg algorithm is used to calculate AR model parameters. Thirdly, auto-power spectrum and cross-power spectrum are obtained by AR model and the periodogram method respectively. Fourthly, the transmissibility function matrix is obtained by Landweber iterative method based on corrected signals at reference points. Finally, the proposed method can significantly reduce the crosstalk effects, resulting in more accurate evaluation of transfer path contributions. Generally, this study can provide accurate and reliable evidences for vibration & noise monitoring and reduction for mechanical systems, and thus benefit for the active control of vibration & noise.

        Distributed Consensus for High-order Agent Dynamics with Communication Delay

        In this paper, consensus problem for high-order multi-agent systems that are at most critically unstable is researched under directed graph. Under the assumption that the delay appears in the communication and being unknown, a distributed protocol with delayed relative state information is proposed to solve the problem, and the design of the constant control gain is not utilizing the precise information of delay. If the agent dynamics has nonzero poles on the imaginary axis, an allowable delay bound is provided to guarantee consensus by studying the joint effects of agent dynamics, network topology and communication delay; otherwise, consensus is tolerant for any large yet bounded communication delay. Especially, it is shown that the unknown delay in communication is allowed to be time-varying if the network topology is undirected, and in this case the delay bound can be enlarged by improving the synchronizability of the undirected graph. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical result.

        볏집, 톱밥 바이오매스와 석탄의 수증기 가스화반응 Kinetics 연구

        볏짚 톱밥과 같은 바이오매스는 석탄과 함께 사용할 수 있는 잠재력이 큰 에너지원으로 이들을 가스화공정에 적용하면 수송용 연료같은 bio-oil을 생산할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 상압의 열천칭 반응기(thermobalance)에서 톱밥, 볏짚, 갈탄, 역청탄, 무연탄의 수증기 가스화 반응특성을 수행하였으며, 가스화 온도 600~850 ℃, 수증기 분압 30~90 kPa의 범위에서 조업변수들이 가스화반응속도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 세 가지의 기체-고체 화학반응모델이 가스화반응의 거동을 예측하는 능력을 비교하였으며, modified volumetric reaction model을 사용하여 공정설계에 필수적인 kinetic 정보를 도출하였다. 두 가지 바이오매스와 세 가지 석탄 촤의 가스화반응성을 비교하였다. Arrhenius plot으로부터 얻어진 바이오매스와 석탄의 활성화에너지는 모두 문헌상의 범위에 속하였다. 각 연료에 대하여 수증기분압에 대한 반응차수를 결정하였으며, 가스화공정 설계의 기초데이타로서 겉보기 반응속도식을 제시하였다.
