Comparative Study of GPS-Integrated Concrete Supply Management using Discrete Event Simulation
Zekavat, Payam Rahnamayie,Mortaheb, Mohammad Mehdi,Han, Sangwon,Bernold, Leonhard Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Ma 2014 Journal of construction engineering and project ma Vol.4 No.2
The management of vehicular supply of "perishable" construction material, such as concrete mixes, faces a series of uncertainties such as weather, daily traffic patterns and accidents. Presented in this paper is a logistics control model for managing a hauling fleet with interrelated processes at both ends and queue capacities. Discrete event simulation is used to model the complex interactions of production units and the randomness of the real world. Two alternative strategies for ready mix concrete delivery, with and without an off-site waiting queue, are studied to compare supply performance. Secondly, the paper discusses the effect of an agent-based GPS tracking system providing real-time travel data that lessens the uncertainty of trucking time. The results show that the combination of GPS information with off-site queuing reduces productivity loss and process wastes of concrete placement as well as the idleness of supply trucks when crew or pump experience an unexpected stoppage.

Background Development of antibodies against infused Factor VIII (FVIII) or "inhibitors" represents a major challenge following FVIII replacement therapy in patients with hemophilia A (HA). Recent studies have shown that certain cellular compartments of the immune system contribute to the production of such antibodies. Herein, we determined the frequency of class-switched CD19+ IgD−CD27+/non-class-switched CD19+ IgD+CD27+ memory B cell subsets and CD19+ CD27hiCD38hi plasmablasts in patients with severe HA and their association with the development of inhibitors in these patients. Methods This cross-sectional case–control study enrolled 32 patients with severe HA, including 8 with and 24 without inhibitors, and 24 healthy individuals. The frequencies of the memory B cell subsets and plasmablasts were determined using flow cytometry. Results The frequency of CD19+ IgD+CD27+ non-class-switched memory B cells was significantly lower in patients with HA (including both patients with and without inhibitors) than in healthy controls. The percentages of both CD19+ IgD−CD27+ class-switched and CD19+ IgD+CD27+ non-class-switched memory B cells did not differ significantly between patients with and without inhibitors. HA patients with inhibitors had significantly higher proportions of CD19+ CD27hiCD38hi plasmablasts than the control group as well as the inhibitor (-) ones. No significant correlation was observed between the inhibitor levels with the percentages of memory B cell subsets and plasmablasts. Conclusion This study is the first to demonstrate a dysregulated proportion of CD19+ IgD+CD27+ non-class-switched memory B cells and CD19+ CD27hiCD38hi plasmablasts in patients with severe HA. Therefore, strategies targeting memory B-cell/plasmablast differentiation may have promising outcomes in the management of inhibitor formation in patients with severe HA.

In this paper, a technique is proposed that enables secondary users to evaluate channel availability in cognitive radio networks. Here, secondary users estimate the utilization of channels via predicting the traffic pattern of primary user, and select a proper channel for radio transmission. The proposed technique reduces the channel switching rate of secondary users (the rate of switching from one channel to another) and the interference on primary users, while maintaining a reasonable call blocking rate of secondary users.
Dynamic Control of Resource Logistics Quality to Eliminate Process Waste in Rebar Placement Work
Sungkon Moon,Payam R. Zekavat,Leonhard E. Bernold,Pekka Leviakangas 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.10
Output-oriented resource control in the traditional planning methods is still prevalent in construction industry. It frequently causes unpredictable wastes leading to deterioration of the sequenced supply chains. On the other hand, the use of feed-forward control offers the opportunity for prevention by ensuring the high quality of necessary process resources. This paper, in turn, presents a dynamic control approach that highlights the effectiveness of feed-forward control on minimising process wastes. The field experiment in this paper presents the rebar supply and placement on an actual construction site. It aims to measure the responsiveness of pre-controlled resources to ever-changing process performance. Collected data during this field study provided the basic data for establishing statistical relationships between resource logistics quality and process performance. The research experiments found out two of the critical resource logistics: (1) Available number of workers; and (2) Distance between resource and final place. Finally the proactive control on these entities resulted in a dramatic reduction of process waste, leading to the improvement of productive work rate (31.0 to 53.3%). The main contribution of the research lies on the first-hand investigation from a very probable situation, which would benefit practical engineers and construction managers.
