        Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome sequence of <i>Hypericum petiolulatum</i> (Hypericaceae)

        <i>Hypericum</i> L. (Hypericaceae) is one of the best-selling herbal medicines in the world comprising ca. 500 species of herbs, shrubs, and small trees. <i>Hypericum petiolulatum</i> Hook. f. & Thomson ex Dyer is widely distributed in China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, India, Malaysia, and Bhutan and is used as a traditional herb to treat hemoptysis and inflammation. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of <i>H. petiolulatum</i>. The complete plastome of <i>H. petiolulatum</i> was 136,105 bp in length, with a large single copy region (LSC) of 93,709 bp, a small single copy region (SSC) of 11088 bp and two identical inverted repeats (IRs) of 15,654 bp. The overall GC content of the plastome was 37.0%, while GC contents of the LSC, SSC, and each IR were 35.5%, 31.0%, and 43.8%, respectively. In addition, 116 genes consisting of 76 protein-coding genes, six ribosomal RNA genes, and 34 transfer RNA genes were identified. A phylogenetic analysis of 14 taxa inferred based on cp genome sequences revealed a close relationship between <i>H. petiolulatum</i> and <i>H. perforatum</i>. The complete cp genome sequence of <i>H. petiolulatum</i> reported in this paper will facilitate population and phylogenomics studies of this medicinal plant group.

        Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate attenuates angiotensin II-induced collagen type I expression in cardiac fibroblasts in vitro

        Cardiac fibrosis occurs after pathological stimuli to the cardiovascular system. One of the most important factors that contribute to cardiac fibrosis is angiotensin II (Ang II). Accumulating studies have suggested that reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in cardiac fibrosis and sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate (STS) possesses antioxidant action. We therefore examined whether STS depresses Ang II-induced collagen type I expression in cardiac fibroblasts. In this study, Ang II significantly enhanced collagen type I expression and collagen synthesis. Meanwhile, Ang II depressed matrix metalloproteinase- 1 (MMP-1) expression and activity. These responses were attenuated by STS. Furthermore, STS depressed the intracellular generation of ROS, NADPH oxidase activity and subunit p47phox expression. In addition, N-acetylcysteine the ROS scavenger, depressed effects of Ang II in a manner similar to STS. In conclusion, the current studies demonstrate that anti-fibrotic effects of STS are mediated by interfering with the modulation of ROS.         Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate depresses angiotensin IIinducedcardiomyocyte hypertrophy through MEK/ERKpathway

        Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of sodium tans - hinone IIA sulfonate (STS) on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy induced by angiotensin II (Ang II) in vivo and in vitro. In long-term treatment, adult Wistar rats were infused with Ang II for three weeks via osmotic mini-pumps and some of them were given intragas - trically of STS. Left ventricle was isolated; the ratio of left ventricular weight to body weight and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were determined and heart morphometry was assessed after hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results indicated STS inhibited Ang II-induced increases in myocyte diameter and decreased the LVW/BW ratio independent of decreasing systolic blood pressure. In vitro, treatment of cultured cardiomyocytes with STS inhibited Ang II-induced increase in cell size, protein synthesis, ANP expression, activation of extracellular signalregulated kinase (ERK) and ERK kinase (MEK). Then we reexamined the mechanism of STS-induced antihypertrophic effects. Results revealed MEK inhibitor U0126 (20 µM) markedly enhanced STS-induced depressions in [3H]leucine incorporation and ANP expression. In conclusion, MEK/ERK pathway plays a significant role in the anti-hypertrophic effects of STS.

        Correction: A sandwich-like CMC-based/graphene/CMC-based conductive agent prepared from needle coke for high-performance LiFePO4 batteries

        Liquid phase exfoliation of natural graphite is an industrially effective solution for graphene preparation. However, many countries have identified natural graphite as a strategic resource and restricted its mining. In this report, we used abundant and readily available needle coke (NC) as a graphene exfoliation precursor and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a dispersant to prepare a sandwich structured conductive graphitized NC nanosheets (GNCNs) by liquid phase exfoliation, freeze-drying and high-temperature graphitization, in which a graphene layer is sandwiched between two thin CMC layers. CMC could increase the liquid absorption and retention ability of the conductive agent and improve the migration rate of lithium ions. The highly ordered graphene layer could accelerate the transmission of electrons. The GNCNs with 0.4 wt% CMC addition showed good rate performance (144.6 mAh g−1 at 5 C) and high cycle stability (96.2% after 200 cycles at 1 C) for LiFePO4 (LFP) battery. The traditional Super-P (SP) conductive agent exhibited low-rate performance (113.9 mAh g−1 at 5 C) and cycle performance (89.9% after 200 cycles at 1 C).         Forecasted 2040 global prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease using hierarchical bayesian approach

        Background/Aims: Due to increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has also been increasing. Current forecast models may not include non-obese NAFLD. Here, we used the Bayesian approach to forecast the prevalence of NAFLD through the year 2040. Methods: Prevalence data from 245 articles involving 2,699,627 persons were used with a hierarchical Bayesian approach to forecast the prevalence of NAFLD through 2040. Subgroup analyses were performed for age, gender, presence of metabolic syndrome, region, and smoking status. Sensitivity analysis was conducted for clinical setting and study quality. Results: The forecasted 2040 prevalence was 55.7%, a three-fold increase since 1990 and a 43.2% increase from the 2020 prevalence of 38.9%. The estimated average yearly increase since 2020 was 2.16%. For those aged <50 years and ≥50 years, the 2040 prevalence were not significantly different (56.7% vs. 61.5%, P=0.52). There was a significant difference in 2040 prevalence by sex (males: 60% vs. 50%) but the trend was steeper for females (annual percentage change: 2.5% vs. 1.5%, P=0.025). There was no difference in trends overtime by region (P=0.48). The increase rate was significantly higher in those without metabolic syndrome (3.8% vs. 0.84%, P=0.003) and smokers (1.4% vs. 1.1%, P=0.011). There was no difference by clinical/community setting (P=0.491) or study quality (P=0.85). Conclusions: By 2040, over half the adult population is forecasted to have NAFLD. The largest increases are expected to occur in women, smokers, and those without metabolic syndrome. Intensified efforts are needed to raise awareness of NAFLD and to determine long-term solutions addressing the driving factors of the disease.

        Multi-Variable and Bi-Objective Optimization of Electric Upsetting Process for Grain Refinement and Its Uniform Distribution

        It is significant to adjust the microstructures of preforms in pursuit of high-quality exhaust valves. This work is a novel attempt to identify the optimum process parameters in electric upsetting of 3Cr20Ni10W2 high-alloy to achieve grain refinement and uniform distribution by multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) optimization. A finite element (FE) model on basis of electric-thermalmechanical and macro-micro sequential multi-physics analysis methods was developed in software MSC. Mar. And different schedules of four independent process variables (heating current (I), clamping length (L), upsetting pressure (Pset) and velocity of the anvil cylinder (v)) were performed aiming to achieve two objective indicators (average grain size (dav) and inhomogeneous degree of grain distribution (σd)). Then, two objective response surfaces were constructed as the functions between the two indicators and the four independent process variables. As per the criterion that simultaneously minimize dav and σd, the processing parameters (Pset, L, v, I) were optimized by MOGA, and corresponding numerical simulation were performed. The results show that both dav and σd are improved significantly at the optimal process condition as verified by the trial-manufacture experiments, which validated the optimal design and corresponding simulation based on grain refinement and uniform distribution by MOGA was credible and effective.

      • Influence of hydrophobic and electrostatic membrane surface properties on biofouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor under different filtration modes

        <P>This study investigated the effect of membrane surface properties on membrane biofouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor treating synthetic wastewater, by employing qualitative membrane surface examination techniques and biofilm quantification. The investigation was carried out on three different types of fouled membrane samples obtained using different filtration methods. Lipid phosphate concentration, which represents viable biomass, was employed as a direct measure of biofouling. Contact angle and zeta potential measurements of clean and fouled ultrafiltration and hollow fibre membranes were conducted. Zeta potentials of membrane samples were measured at various electrolyte pHs. The surface energy of membrane samples was calculated and reported from the data obtained from contact angle of measurements. The outcomes from this study can be used as the basis of a technique to examine the potential of biofouling in membrane processes.</P>
