<P>The vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) is a promising technology for lots of applications. To solve the membrane fouling and wetting problems, in this paper, a novel ZnO nanorods 1<I>H</I>,1<I>H</I>,2<I>H</I>,2<I>H</I>-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PDTS) modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane with a micro/nanoscale hierarchical structure and a superhydrophobic surface has been prepared and applied to the VMD process for distilling highly salty water, for the first time. Among these, a pyrolysis-adhesion method is created to obtain the ZnO seeds and fasten them on the PVDF substrate firmly. The novel modified membrane shows a stable superhydrophobic surface with a water contact angle of 152°, easy cleaning property, excellent thermal and mechanical stability, because of the Cassie’s state caused by pocketing much air in the hydrophobized ZnO nanorods, the low surface energy of PDTS coating, and the strong adhesion between ZnO nanorods and PVDF membrane, which has built an ideal structure for VMD application. After 8 h VMD of 200 g L<SUP>-1</SUP> NaCl solution, compared to the virgin PVDF membrane, the novel membrane shows a similar permeate flux but a much higher quality permeated liquid because of its unique antifouling and antiwetting caused by the several microns gap between the feed and the membrane. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>To solve the problems of membrane material tolerance and membrane fouling, a micro/nano hierarchial structure with low surface energy was constructed above the exterior surface of a ceramic hollow fiber membrane using ZnO nanorod arrays and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PDTS) coatings, which make it superhydrophobic and self-cleaning. The surface morphology, chemical functional groups, and water contact angel of the modified membranes were identified. The results show that large quantity of ZnO nanorods possess desirable characteristics (<I>i.e.</I> superhydrophobicity, exceptional thermal and mechanical stability, and water contact angle of 160.12°) were detected on the ceramic membrane. Purpose Current variability in methods for tumor mutational burden (TMB) estimation and reporting demonstrates the urgent need for a homogeneous TMB assessment approach. Here, we compared TMB distributions in different cancer types using two customized targeted panels commonly used in clinical practice. Materials and Methods TMB spectra of 295- and 1021-gene panels in multiple cancer types were compared using targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS). The TMB distributions across a diverse cohort of 2,332 cancer cases were then investigated for their associations with clinical features. Treatment response data were collected for 222 patients who received immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and their homologous recombination DNA damage repair (HR-DDR) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression were additionally assessed and compared with the TMB and response rate. Results The median TMB between gene panels was similar despite a wide range in TMB values. The highest TMB was eight and 10 in patients with squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal carcinoma according to the classification of histopathology and cancer types, respectively. Twenty-three out of 103 patients (22.3%) were HR-DDR–positive and could benefit from ICI therapy; out of those 23 patients, seven patients had high TMB (p=0.004). Additionally, PD-L1 expression was not associated with TMB or treatment response among patients receiving ICIs. Conclusion Targeted NGS assays demonstrated the ability to evaluate TMB in pan-cancer samples as a tool to predict response to ICIs. In addition, TMB integrated with HR-DDR–positive status could be a significant biomarker for predicting ICI response in patients.
Transformerless Three-Level DC-DC Buck Converter with a High Step-Down Conversion Ratio

For high power high step-down dc-dc conversion applications, conventional three-level dc-dc converters are subject to extreme duty cycles or increased volume and cost due to the use of transformers. In this paper, a transformerless three-level dc-dc buck converter with a high step-down conversion ratio is proposed. The converter comprises two asymmetrical half bridges, which are of the neutral point clamped structures. Therefore, the output pulse voltage of the converter can be obtained in terms of the voltage difference between the two half bridges. In order to realize harmonious switching of the converter, a modulation strategy with capacitor voltages self balance is presented. According to the deduced output dc voltage function, transformerless operation without extreme duty cycles can be implemented. Experimental results from a 1kW prototype verify the validity of the proposed converter. It is suitable for ship electric power distribution systems.

Background: We designed this randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess whether lobaplatin-based concurrent chemotherapy might be superior to cisplatin-based concurrent chemotherapy for FIGO stage II and III cervical cancer in terms of efficacy and safety. Materials and Methods: This prospective, open-label RCT aims to enroll 180 patients with FIGO stage II and III cervical cancer, randomly allocated to one of the three treatment groups (cisplatin $15mg/m^2$, cisplatin $20mg/m^2$ and lobaplatin $35mg/m^2$), with 60 patients in each group. All patients will receive external beam irradiation (EBRT) and high-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy (HDR-ICBT). Patients in cisplatin $15mg/m^2$ and $20mg/m^2$ groups will be administered four cycles of $15mg/m^2$ or $20mg/m^2$ cisplatin intravenously once weekly from the second week to the fifth week during EBRT, while patients inthe lobaplatin $35mg/m^2$ group will be administered two cycles of $35mg/m^2$ lobaplatin intravenously in the second and fifth week respectively during pelvic EBRT. All participants will be followed up for at least 12 months. Complete remission rate and progression-free survival (PFS) will be the primary endpoints. Overall survival (OS), incidence of adverse events (AEs), and quality of life will be the secondary endpoints. Results: Between March 2013 and March 2014, a total of 61 patients with FIGO stage II and III cervical cancer were randomly assigned to cisplatin $15mg/m^2$ group (n=21), cisplatin $20mg/m^2$ group (n=21) and lobaplatin $35mg/m^2$ group (n=19). We conducted a preliminary analysis of the results. Similar rates of complete remission and grades 3-4 gastrointestinal reactions were observed for the three treatment groups (P=0.801 and 0.793, respectively). Grade 3-4 hematologic toxicity was more frequent in the lobaplatin group than the cisplatin group. Conclusions: This proposed study will be the first RCT to evaluate whether lobaplatin-based chemoraiotherapy will have beneficial effects, compared with cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy, on complete remission rate, PFS, OS, AEs and quality of life for FIGO stage II and III cervical cancer.

Tissue-specific gene expression is regulated by epigenetic modification involving trans-acting factors. Here, we identified that the human MAGEB16 gene and its mouse homolog, Mageb16, are only expressed in the testis. To investigate the mechanism governing their expression, the promoter methy-lation status of these genes was examined in different samples. Two CpG islands (CGIs) in the 5` upstream region of MAGEB16 were highly demethylated in human testes, whereas they were methylated in cells without MAGEB16 expression. Similarly, the CGI in Mageb16 was hypomethylated in mouse testes but hypermethylated in other tissues and cells without Mageb16 expression. Additionally, the expression of these genes could be activated by treatment with the demethylation agent 5`-aza-2`- deoxycytidine (5`-aza-CdR). Luciferase assays revealed that both gene promoter activities were inhibited by methylation of the CGI regions. Therefore, we propose that the testis-specific expression of MAGEB16 and Mageb16 is regulated by the methylation status of their promoter regions. [BMB Reports 2014; 47(2): 86-91]
New phenylpropanoids from Bulbophyllum retusiusculum

Two new phenylpropanoids, retusiusines A (1) and B (2), and a pair of new phenylpropyl enantiomers, (±)-retusiusine C (3a and 3b), together with eight known compounds, dihydroconiferyl dihydro-p-coumarate (4), methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate (5), 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanoic acid (6), dihydroferulic acid (7), methyl 3-(4-methoxyphenyl) propionate (8), 3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-propenal (9), trans-p-coumaric acid (10) and dihydroconiferyl alcohol (11), were isolated from the tubers of Bulbophyllum retusiusculum. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were determined by calculating their electronic circular dichroism (ECD), spectra and specific optical rotations and comparing the calculated values with the experimental data. Compound 2 exhibited potent antifungal activity against Candida albicans (16 μg/mL). Compound 3 showed moderate antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis (64 μg/mL).
Supervised locally tangent space alignment for machine fault diagnosis

How to deal with the high-dimensional and nonlinear data is a challenging problem for fault diagnosis. An unsupervised locally tangentspace alignment (LTSA) has recently proven to be an effective unsupervised manifold learning algorithm for high-dimensional dataanalysis. In this paper, a supervised expansion of LTSA (named S-LTSA) is proposed, which takes full advantage of class label informationto improve classification performance. Based on S-LTSA, a novel machine fault diagnosis approach is proposed to deal with thehigh-dimensional fault data that contain multiple manifolds corresponding to fault classes. The experiment results with bearing fault datashow that the proposed approach outperforms the other fault pattern recognition approaches such PCA, ICA, LDA and LTSA.
