Edward Young’s Night Thoughts IX: A Reworking of Spinoza and Locke in Perceptions of Divinity

Vol.25 No.4

This article examines how Edward Young’s Night Thoughts IX reshapes the key concepts of Baruch Spinoza and John Locke while deploying the speaker’s perceptions of the Almighty in human domains. At the age of sensibility, it was Young among his contemporary writers, who seriously utilizes, in his contemplative ode, divine experiences of external circumstances. His reworking of the two philosophers enables the speaker to effectively deliver his spiritual awareness of divinity to Lorenzo, who is a contemporary iconic figure ignoring immaterial revelations in the surrounding world. The essay scrutinizes how Young’s allusion to Spinoza and Locke contributes to enhancing the capability of one’s mind to realize the diverse manifestations of deity in permanent natural landscapes.

Cooking, Textural, Sensorial, and Antioxidant Properties of Common and Tartary Buckwheat Noodles

        Yu Jie Ma,Xu Dan Guo,Hang Liu,Bian Na Xu,Min Wang 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.1

Noodles made from flour of 3 common and 2tartary buckwheat cultivars were investigated into cooking, textural, sensorial, antioxidant properties, and polyphenol composition. Common buckwheat noodles possessed greater tensility, lower adhesiveness, and better sensory properties. Buckwheat noodles were found to be good sources of dietary polyphenols and tartary buckwheat noodles contained a higher level of total phenolics (182.65-221.27 mg GA eq./100 g d.w.) and flavonoids (183.33-218.69 mg rutin eq./100 g d.w.) than their counterparts (p<0.05). Tartary buckwheat noodles also showed higher antioxidant capacity measured by reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, and ABTS•+ scavenging assay. HPLC analysis identified and quantified 12 polyphenol compounds and revealed that rutin and quercetin were the dominant phenolic compounds. Among them, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, rutin, and quercetin were higher in tartary buckwheat noodles, while common buckwheat noodles had greater contents of chlorogenic acid. Overall, buckwheat noodles are good alternative food with high nutritional quality.

John Donne’s The Lamentations of Jeremy: Manifestations of Iniquity, Affliction, and Entreaty to God

Vol.24 No.1

This article investigates how John Donne’s The Lamentations of Jeremy links with his diverse perceptions of spiritual disease, which is initiated by his direct experiences of dreadful prevalence of the London plague. Unlike in his earlier works of the 1610s where he raises the social corruptions, Donne’s religious perspectives, situated in the historical context, divert the notion of external pollution into that of internal deteriorations via the biblical prophet Jeremy’s recognitions of the transgressive desire of man and its irresistible consequence of God’s wrath. Whereas Devotions upon Emergent Occasions X shows the author’s objective diagnosis of the origin of social infection, the Lamentations of Jeremy dramatizes the protagonist’s individual witnessing of the wrongdoings of people including himself, whereby Donne, for the first time, expands the range of tribulation into general and personal domains.

John Donne`s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions I: Corporeal Infirmity, Misery, and Subsequent Reverberation

Vol.59 No.1

This article aims to investigate how the first chapter of John Donne’s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions features his unswerving contemplations into his physical enervation and its vigorous influences on the inner workings of his mind. The author establishes one of the recurrent issues throughout the whole work ― his perception of wretchedness in the midst of the bodily ordeal. He depicts the present condition of discomfort, enquiring as to where man’s unforeseen, bitter occasion would possibly originate. While dealing with this subject, Donne simultaneously draws on the imperishable spirit inherent within his mind, which enables him to sustain the afflictive aftermaths of physical weakness. He elaborates on the coherent thematic conceptions by utilizing the intertwined structural patterns of “Meditation,” “Expostulation,” and “Prayer,” which are constituted within this chapter.(Changwon National University)

Nature and Harold's Pursuit of Stoical Forbearance in Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage Ⅲ

Vol.50 No.1

In Childe HaroId's Pilgrimage III, Byron's portrait of Harold concentrates on showing how the character develops a stoical attitude toward suffering, as he comes to terms with the frustrations of life brought about by his self-exile, alienation, failed love, and loss of fame and honor. As Byron outlines this mental journey, Harold's intense relationship with nature plays a crucial role in helping him to achieve his spiritual rebirth, Indeed, this relationship is made explicit in the poem, for Byron closely identifies Harold's spiritual pilgrimage with his appreciation of the vivacity of nature. This paper, therefore, will examine how Harold's mental and spiritual communion with nature contributes to his rediscovery of love and a sense of vigor in the midst of his present tribulations.
