      • MESSAGE TYPE STRATEGY IN CHARITABLE FUNDRAISING

        Youngjune Kim,Hakkyun Kim,Hyeonyeong Seo,Hyoseon Lee 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

In appeals for donations, some charities highlight why their programs are important or abstract meanings that individuals' contributions can have. On the other hand, some other charities highlight how their programs are implemented or specific actions that are to be made. Drawing on construal level theory, we posit that abstract, “why” laden appeals will be more persuasive than concrete, “how” laden appeals when psychological distance (via physical distance) is high (vs. low). One experiment was conducted to test this premise. Specifically, we examined whether the location where the programs of a nonprofit organization were run was far (i.e., a foreign country) or near (i.e., domestically) would moderate the persuasiveness of abstract versus concrete messages. In terms of the procedure, participants were first asked to read a message from a nonprofit organization helping children suffering from rare diseases in their own country or in foreign countries. Then, they indicated the extent to which they were willing to help the nonprofit. To manipulate the message type, we varied the headline as well as the content of the message so as to make on version construed at a low level and the other at a high level. Further, to investigate a moderating role of disease types, we measured the changes in response to when disease names are suggested more specifically due to the variation in the degree of familiarity to the charity subject. The results of this experiment supported our prediction on the fit effect between physical distance and message type. To be specific, when the appeal was for a foreign cause, abstract messages generated a higher willingness to help the nonprofit. Conversely, when the appeal was for a local cause, concrete messages generated a higher willingness to help the nonprofit. These results indicate construal fit effect in a charitable giving context. Furthermore, we investigated a moderating role of disease types given that such fit effects can be stronger among low- (vs. highly) familiarity of disease. We observed a significant three-way interaction involving the degree of familiarity.

      • Possible Role of Phosphoinositide-3-Kinase in Mx1 Protein Translation and Antiviral Activity of Interferon-Omega-Stimulated HeLa Cells

        Seo, Youngjun,Kim, Mihee,Choi, Minjoung,Kim, Sunhee,Park, Kidae,Oh, Ilung,Chung, Seungtae,Suh, Hongwon,Hong, Seunghwa,Park, Suenie S. Karger AG 2011 Pharmacology Vol.87 No.3

<P>Interferon ω (IFN-ω), a cytokine released during innate immune activation, is well known for promoting direct antiviral responses; however, the possible signal pathways that are initiated by IFN-ω binding to the type I IFN receptors have not been fully studied. Here, we provide evidence that activation of phosphoinositide-3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling plays a pivotal role in the generation of IFN-ω-mediated biological responses. We found that LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor)-attenuated antiviral activities are induced by IFN-ω treatment. Although such effects of LY294002 are unrelated to regulatory activities on IFN-ω-dependent Mx1 (myxovirus resistance 1) or Mx2 gene transcriptional regulation, translation of Mx1 protein, which was known as a key mediator of cell-autonomous antiviral resistance, was significantly reduced by PI3K inhibition. Further studies showed that PI3K inhibition using LY294002 leads to a decrease in PI3K substrate Akt and mitogen-activated protein kinase extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 phosphorylation/activation. In addition, although LY294002 was not able to reduce STAT1 activation, we found that the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/p70 S6 kinase pathway was significantly attenuated by inhibition of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. These results indicate that the PI3K/Akt pathway is a common and central integrator for antiviral responses in IFN-ω signaling via its regulatory effects on mTOR that are required for initiation of mRNA translation of Mx genes.</P><P>Copyright © 2011 S. • Development of real-time automatic sorting system for color PET recycling process

        Youngjun Jeon,Sangwoo Um,Jaemin Yoo,Minseok Seo,Eugene Jeong,Woojin Seo,Daewon Kang,Hancheul Song,Kyung-Soo Kim,Soohyun Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2020 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2020 No.10

Pollution from discarded plastic has become a serious environmental problem. The Great Pacific garbage patch consisting of abandoned plastics is killing marine life. In addition, micro-plastics decomposed by solar UV radiation and waves can accumulate in the human body. Recycling plastic is accordingly a critical element of waste management. As part of the solution to this problem, factory automation in recycling plants to handle more waste faster is essential. The amount of reproduced raw plastics is proportional to the inlet speed of the plastics waste stream into a recycling process line. Furthermore, the quality of recycled products with reproduced raw plastics depends on the sorting purity through the line. Thus, an automated system should be capable of real-time classification of the plastics category and rapid manipulation for removing selected plastics. We propose a real-time sorting system for mixed color plastics by applying a machine learning algorithm and a parallel manipulator with a vacuum suction pad. The learning data and picking test samples were collected from a municipal waste disposal site at RM corporation factory. This work shows the feasibility of real-time plastics recycling automation and a future development direction.

DeepFam: deep learning based alignment-free method for protein family modeling and prediction

        Seo, Seokjun,Oh, Minsik,Park, Youngjune,Kim, Sun Oxford University Press 2018 Bioinformatics Vol.34 No.13

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Motivation</B></P><P>A large number of newly sequenced proteins are generated by the next-generation sequencing technologies and the biochemical function assignment of the proteins is an important task. However, biological experiments are too expensive to characterize such a large number of protein sequences, thus protein function prediction is primarily done by computational modeling methods, such as profile Hidden Markov Model (pHMM) and <I>k</I>-mer based methods. Nevertheless, existing methods have some limitations; <I>k</I>-mer based methods are not accurate enough to assign protein functions and pHMM is not fast enough to handle large number of protein sequences from numerous genome projects. Therefore, a more accurate and faster protein function prediction method is needed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In this paper, we introduce DeepFam, an alignment-free method that can extract functional information directly from sequences without the need of multiple sequence alignments. In extensive experiments using the Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COGs) and G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) dataset, DeepFam achieved better performance in terms of accuracy and runtime for predicting functions of proteins compared to the state-of-the-art methods, both alignment-free and alignment-based methods. Additionally, we showed that DeepFam has a power of capturing conserved regions to model protein families. In fact, DeepFam was able to detect conserved regions documented in the Prosite database while predicting functions of proteins. Our deep learning method will be useful in characterizing functions of the ever increasing protein sequences.</P><P><B>Availability and implementation</B></P><P>Codes are available at https://bhi-kimlab.github.io/DeepFam.</P>

        Seo, Soonjoo,Park, Byoungnam,Kim, Youngjun,Lee, Hyun Uk,Kim, Hyeran,Lee, Seung Youb,Kim, Yooseok,Won, Jonghan,Kim, Youn Jung,Lee, Jouhahn Elsevier 2018 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.448 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Semiconductor quantum dots have intriguing electronic and optical properties distinguished from bulk owing to quantum confinement effects. Among the two-dimensional materials, black phosphorus (BP) has generated enormous excitement due to its tunable direct band gap and high p-type semiconducting properties. We prepared BP quantum dots (BPQDs) by simple liquid exfoliation using distilled water and ethanol solution. Our structural data show the uniform distribution of circular BPQDs with the average lateral size of 4.08 ± 0.66 nm and the height of 1.13 ± 0.32 nm. We fabricated BPQD field-effect transistors (FETs) to investigate the electrical characteristics of BPQD-based devices and found that both hole and electron transport can be probed in the BPQD FETs. The BPQD FETs exhibited unprecedentedly ambipolar behavior with the mobility of 0.11 cm2 V−1 s−1 for p type and 0.09 cm2 V−1 s−1 for n type at 300 K. Our results provide the simple preparation methods to fabricate ambipolar BPQD FETs with the comparable hole and electron transport for large-area applications in solar cells and optoelectronic devices.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The BPQDs can be mass-produced at room temperature. </LI> <LI> The BPQDs have the lateral size of ∼4.0 nm and the height of ∼1 nm. </LI> <LI> The BPQDs FETs exhibits ambipolar behavior with the comparable hole and electron mobility. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>BP quantum dot-based field effect transistor and its characteristic behavior.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The Reality of the Barracks Culture of the Korean Armed Forces of Generation MZ and the Search for Alternatives

        Junhyeok Seo,Jiwon Yun,Youngjun Jo J-INSTITUTE 2022 International Journal of Military Affairs Vol.7 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of Generation MZ in the reality of the Korean armed forces where most of the enlisted soldiers are Generation MZ, and consider the task of improving the barracks culture for them. Method: Literature study and empirical data were carried out including books, academic journals, and disser-tations related to the barracks culture’s improvement and generation MZ in order to analyze the justification and promotion strategy of barracks culture improvement and a barracks culture improvement plan appropriate for the characteristics of the military organization and Generation MZ. Results: In order to improve the barracks culture appropriate for the characteristics of Generation MZ, the Ko-rean armed forces need such measures as the strengthened authority and responsibility of the soldiers and allowed use of mobile phones. Furthermore, as a measure to establish military discipline, punishment for human rights, security, and negligence related issues need to be strengthened. Generation MZ lack personal experiences, and hence, group counseling ought to also be facilitated. Such policies targeting Generation MZ will be meaningful policies for the Generation Alpha who will enlist in the military in the future. Conclusion: Given the nature of the Republic of Korea, which has adopted the conscription system, the military ought to be able to play the role of the last public education institution. The military ought to be able to help the Republic of Korea take a large leap toward becoming a world-class nation by recovering the hopes and dreams which Generation MZ, called the Generation of 7 Losses, lost, and developing on their own. If the military promoted barracks culture improvement can create synergies in tandem with the independent and enterprising characteristics of Generation MZ, the Republic of Korea will not only be able to take a new leap forward comparable to the miracle of the Han River, but will also become a leading nation qualified to spearhead the future of the world.
