Although it has been established that diabetes increases susceptibility to infections, the role of insulin (INS) in the immune response is unknown. Here, we investigated the immunological function of INS. Proinsulin dimer (pINSd) was a potent immune stimulus that induced inflammatory cytokines, but mature INS was unable to induce an immune response. An affinity-purified rabbit polyclonal antibody raised against mature IL-1α recognized IL-1α and pINS but failed to detect mature INS and IL-1β. Analysis of the pINS sequence revealed the existence of an INS/IL-1α motif in the C-peptide of pINS. Surprisingly, the INS/IL-1α motif was recognized by monoclonal antibody raised against IL-1α. Deleting the INS/IL-1α motif in pINSd and IL-1α changed their activities. To investigate the pINSd receptor, the reconstitution of IL-1 receptor 1 (IL-1R1) in Wish cells restored pINSd activity that was reversed by an IL-1R antagonist. These data suggested that pINSd needs IL-1R1 for inflammatory cytokine induction. Mouse embryo fibroblast cells of IL-1R1-deficient mice further confirmed that pINSd promotes immune responses through IL-1R1.

In early 2008, the ILCE (Inter-Laboratory Correlation Exercise) was performed by the Korea Particle Measurement Program (KPMP) with a domestic diesel passenger vehicle equipped with a catalyzed DPF between three certification laboratories and the research center of an automotive manufacturer to meet EURO 5 and EURO 6 of particle number concentration for light-duty vehicles. This paper focused on measuring the particle number and mass levels from a representative light-duty diesel passenger vehicle during new European driving cycle (NEDC) mode to analyze the repeatability and reproducibility between laboratories in Korea. In addition, particle size distribution characteristics from ILCE test vehicle were compared with LPG, gasoline, and non-DPF diesel vehicles. From the ILCE test results in Korea, the mean total particle number concentration levels ranged from 5.43E+10 #/㎞ to 1.58E+11 #/㎞ and 0.0003 g/㎞ to 0.0036 g/㎞ for particle mass. Repeatability between participating laboratories ranged from 32% to 66% for particle number, 11% to 70% for particle mass; the reproducibility level was 46% for particle number, and 66% for particle mass emission.

Objective-The Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer’s disease (KBASE) aimed to recruit 650 individuals, aged from 20 to 90 years, to search for new biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and to investigate how multi-faceted lifetime experiences and bodily changes contribute to the brain changes or brain pathologies related to the AD process. Methods-All participants received comprehensive clinical and neuropsychological evaluations, multi-modal brain imaging, including magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, [11C]Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography (PET), and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-PET, blood and genetic marker analyses at baseline, and a subset of participants underwent actigraph monitoring and completed a sleep diary. Participants are to be followed annually with clinical and neuropsychological assessments, and biannually with the full KBASE assessment, including neuroimaging and laboratory tests. Results-As of March 2017, in total, 758 individuals had volunteered for this study. Among them, in total, 591 participants-291 cognitively normal (CN) old-aged individuals, 74 CN young- and middle-aged individuals, 139 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 87 individuals with AD dementia (ADD)-were enrolled at baseline, after excluding 162 individuals. A subset of participants (n=275) underwent actigraph monitoring. Conclusion-The KBASE cohort is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study that recruited participants with a wide age range and a wide distribution of cognitive status (CN, MCI, and ADD) and it has several strengths in its design and methodologies. Details of the recruitment, study methodology, and baseline sample characteristics are described in this paper.

Abstract

Korean Helium Cooled Ceramic Reflector (HCCR) Test Blanket Module (TBM) will be installed at the #18 equatorial port of the Vaccum Vessel in order to test the feasibility of the breeding blanket performance for forthcoming fusion power plant in the ITER TBM Program. Since ITER tokamak contains Vaccum Vessel and set of electromagnetic coils, the TBM as well as other components is greatly influenced by magnetic field generated by these coils. By the electromagnetic (EM) fast transient events such as major disruption (MD), vertical displacement event (VDE) or magnet fast discharge (MFD) occurred in tokamak system, the eddy current can be induced eventually in the conducting components. As a result, the magnetic field and induced eddy current produce extremely huge EM load (force and moment) on the TBM. Therefore, EM load calculation is one of the most important analyses for optimized design of TBM. In this study, a 20-degree sector model for tokamak system including central solenoid (CS) coil, poloidal field (PF) coil, toroidal field (TF) coil, vaccum vessel, shield blankets and TBM set (TBM, TBM key, TBM shield, TBM frame) is prepared for analysis by ANSYS-EMAG tool. Concerning the installation location of the TBM, a major disruption scenario is particularly applied for fast transient analysis. The final goal of this study is to evaluate the EM load on HCCR TBM during plasma major disruption.

Purpose: To explore the feasibility of maximum diameter as a response assessment method for vestibular schwannomas (VS) after stereotactic radiosurgery or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (RT), we analyzed the concordance of RT responses between maximum diameters and volumetric measurements. Materials and Methods: Forty-two patients receiving curative stereotactic radiosurgery or fractionated stereotactic RT for VS were analyzed retrospectively. Twelve patients were excluded: 4 did not receive follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and 8 had initial MRI scans with a slice thickness >3 mm. The maximum diameter, tumor volume (TV), and enhanced tumor volume (ETV) were measured in each MRI study. The percent change after RT was evaluated according to the measurement methods and their concordances were calculated with the Pearson correlation. The response classifications were determined by the assessment modalities, and their agreement was analyzed with Cohen kappa statistics. Results: Median follow-up was 31.0 months (range, 3.5 to 86.5 months), and 90 follow-up MRI studies were analyzed. The percent change of maximum diameter correlated strongly with TV and ETV (r(p) = 0.85, 0.63, p = 0.000, respectively). Concordance of responses between the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) using the maximum diameters and either TV or ETV were moderate (kappa = 0.58; 95% confidence interval, 0.32-0.85) or fair (kappa = 0.32; 95% confidence interval, 0.05-0.59), respectively. Conclusions: The percent changes in maximum diameter and the responses in RECIST were significantly concordant with those in the volumetric measurements. Therefore, the maximum diameters can be used for the response evaluation of VS following stereotactic RT.

Abstract

Since the stress due to the thermal load on breeding blanket structure is one of the main design driver, the thermal conductivity is necessary input data for thermal-structural and thermo-hydraulic analyses performed in order to understand the heat transfer phenomena and estimate the thermal stress. Since for the functional materials of solid type breeding blanket a pebble-bed form is mainly adopted instead of a bulk form such as a block or a disk, it should be needed to measure the thermal conductivity of pebble-bed. In this study, the effective thermal conductivity of pebble-bed is measured by laser flash method, which is one of the various thermal conductivity measurement methods, because this method has several advantages such as a wide thermal conductivity range of the measurement and a small amount of pebbles. A sample holder considering the heat transfer mechanism from the laser source to pebble-bed has been specially designed in order to apply the laser flash technique to the pebble-bed sample and it has been validated by the experiments. This paper introduces preliminary results of the effective thermal conductivity on the pebble-bed using this sample holder.

Highlights

The effective thermal conductivity of a graphite pebble-bed was successfully measured by Laser Flash Method.

For the measurement on pebble-bed form, the new sample holder was specially designed.

The 3-layers measurement technique was designed in order to make the laser flash method successful.

The effective thermal conductivity of a graphite pebble-bed was converged around 3.2W/mK.

The effect of the temperature (RT∼200°C) in a graphite pebble-bed was negligible.
