• Using Color Composition Diagrams as a Medium for Promoting Better-balanced Diet

        Yao Dai,Yi-Lin Zhuang,Nan-Ling Yeh,Jun Pana,I-Ping Chen 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

We aim to design an App that helps people establish an increased awareness on their daily diet in a highly playful manner. The core concept of this App is to use color information of food photographs people take before meals to give users feedback on how to balance their diets. A healthy food and an unhealthy food color template were created through the following process: using the guideline provided by WHO (World Health Organization), we collected thousands of images of healthy and unhealthy food. The collective color attributes (hue composition, weights of redness, greenness, yellowness, and blueness, average luminance, general contrast) of each of the two groups were derived to render a visualizable color composition template. This way, all the incoming food pictures taken by the user can be compared to the healthy and the unhealthy template. Instead of informing the user ‘You should take more protein.’, our App gives feedback like ‘Maybe you should try more RED.’ Our user experience assessment shows that users enjoy playing with such graphic interface and will potentially pay more attention to their daily diets.

Objective : This research compared stabilities between two types of dental implant (SLATM, Institut Straumann AG, Waldenburg, Switzerland and SSⅡTM, Osstem co, Busan, Korea) using Osstell Mentor (Integration Diagnostics AB, Goteborg, Sweden) considering surgery methods, surgery area, diameter of implant, systemic disease, and smoking for obtaining prognosis information when installing fixture of dental implant. Materials & Methods : 206 implants of 131 patients taken by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) were determined as a final sample. Dental implants were installed as protocol of supplier by a excellent dentist who had 10 years experience about dental implants. Before connecting abutments (3 months after installation of fixture), RFA were measured twice for buccal and lingual direction to obtain average value. Results : Dental implants at mandible showed significantly higher stabilities significantly than at maxilla (p<0.001). Diameter 4.8 implants had also higher stabilities than diameter 4.1 in case of SLATM implants (p<0.001). SLATM implants showed more excellent stabilities than SSⅡTM implants, especially at posterior area of mandible (p=0.045) and premolar area of maxilla (p=0.032). Conclusions : This research revealed higher stabilities of SLATM implants than SSⅡTM implant, especially at posterior area of mandible (p=0.045) and premolar area of maxilla (p=0.032).

Rapid and Complete Biodegradation of Acrylic Acid by a Novel Strain Rhodococcus ruber JJ-3: Kinetics, Carbon Balance, and Degradation Pathways

        Jinjia He,Yi Chen,Luyao Dai,Jiachao Yao,Yu Mei,Dzmitry Hrynsphan,Savitskaya Tatsiana,Jun Chen 한국생물공학회 2020 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.25 No.4

Acrylic acid is used in various industrial applications but inflicts harm to human health and causes environmental pollution. A new bacterium, identified as Rhodococcus ruber JJ-3, was isolated, which can degrade high concentrations of acrylic acid rapidly and completely. Experimental results showed that the strain can achieve complete degradation of 1000 mg·L−1 acrylic acid in 11 h under the following conditions: pH 7, temperature 35°C, and inoculation quantity 15%. A high concentration of acrylic acid (2000 mg·L−1) can be completely removed in 28 h. According to the Monod model, the maximum specific degradation rate (vmax) and half saturation rate constant (KS) of the strain were 0.85 h−1 and 101.83 mg·L−1, respectively. The results of carbon balance revealed that 54.6% carbon was assimilated by R. ruber JJ-3 as biomass, and 43.0% carbon was mineralized into CO2. Furthermore, glycerol and lactic acid were measured as intermediates, and the possible degradation pathway was proposed during the biodegradation of acrylic acid. These results suggested that R. ruber JJ-3 completely degrades acrylic acid and might have a potential environmental implication in the purification of acrylic acid-contaminated environments.

Optical Properties of Zinc-oxide Films Determined Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry with Various Dispersion Models

        Zhong-Hong Dai,Jie Shao,Yi-Ming Chen,Yu-Xiang Zheng,Jia-Da Wu,Liang-Yao Chen,Rong-Jun Zhang 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.3

In this work, we have studied the optical properties of wurtizite zinc-oxide films grown on silicon (100) substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Spectroscopic ellipsometry and three dispersion models, namely, the Sellmeier, Cauchy, and Forouhi-Bloomer models, were applied for determining the optical constants of the ZnO thin films. A comparison was made between two samples that were deposited for 30 minutes (sample I) and 60 minutes (sample II), respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that there are two types of preferred-orientation, i.e., (101) and (100) orientations for sample I and II, respectively. Results show that the Cauchy model gives the best fit for the samples with least root mean square error (RMSE) whereas the Forouhi-Bloomer model is most suitable for the data analysis in both the transparent and the absorption regions. The optical properties extracted from different dispersion models have been compared with the data reported in the literature. The results given in this work show that different dispersion models should be applied to obtain the optical constants In this work, we have studied the optical properties of wurtizite zinc-oxide films grown on silicon (100) substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Establishment of a novel myocarditis mouse model based on cyclosporine A

        Zhao Tian Hao,Jiang Yi Xuan,Chen Kai Qin,Qiu Dan,Xu Yan Zhe,Ye Chun,Ren Ting,Zhang Bo,Dai Bin,Hu Jue,Lu Jun,Zhou Fang Liang,Xiao Rong,Lu Fang Guo,Wei Ke 한국유전학회 2022 Genes & Genomics Vol.44 No.12

Background: Myocarditis is a myocardial injury that can easily cause adolescent death. Traditional research models of animal invasion with viral components, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or porcine myocardial myosin, among others, have the shortcomings of potential biological safety hazards and high animal mortality. Objective: To explore the construction of a novel myocarditis model with cyclosporine A and the potential genes and pathways associated with it. Methods: BALB/c mice were used in this study, and cyclosporin A and LPS were injected into the peritoneal cavity of mice. The successful establishment of the model was assessed by detecting serum myocardial injury markers and inflammatory factors levels, HE, IHC staining, and RT-qPCR methods. Key genes were obtained using the GSE35182 dataset from the GEO database and validated with the RT-qPCR method. Results: We found that a large number of inflammatory cells infiltrated the myocardium of mice in each group of Cyclosporin A constructed model, while the expression of inflammatory factor indicators was increased, and this model has the characteristics of high degree of local inflammation in myocardial tissue, low mortality, and safe and non-toxic treatment. Using GSE35182 data, we selected 18 Hub genes and validated Hub genes in myocardial tissue with RT-qPCR and found that multiple signaling pathways such as Toll-likereceptor signaling pathway(TLRs), Rap1 signal pathway(Rap1), and Chemokine signaling pathway may be involved in the development of myocarditis. Conclusion: Cyclosporin A can construct a new myocarditis model, and TLRs, Chemokines and Rap1 signaling pathways may be the core pathways of myocarditis.

Multivalency-Driven Formation of Te-Based Monolayer Materials: A Combined First-Principles and Experimental study

        Zhu, Zhili,Cai, Xiaolin,Yi, Seho,Chen, Jinglei,Dai, Yawei,Niu, Chunyao,Guo, Zhengxiao,Xie, Maohai,Liu, Feng,Cho, Jun-Hyung,Jia, Yu,Zhang, Zhenyu American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review Letters Vol.119 No.10

Contemporary science is witnessing a rapid expansion of the two-dimensional (2D) materials family, each member possessing intriguing emergent properties of fundamental and practical importance. Using the particle-swarm optimization method in combination with first-principles density functional theory calculations, here we predict a new category of 2D monolayers named tellurene, composed of the metalloid element Te, with stable 1T-MoS2-like (alpha-Te), and metastable tetragonal (beta-Te) and 2H-MoS2-like (gamma-Te) structures. The underlying formation mechanism is inherently rooted in the multivalent nature of Te, with the central-layer Te behaving more metal-like (e.g., Mo), and the two outer layers more semiconductorlike (e.g., S). We also show that the alpha-Te phase can be spontaneously obtained from the magic thicknesses divisible by three layers truncated along the [ 001] direction of the trigonal structure of bulk Te, and both the alpha- and alpha-Te phases possess electron and hole mobilities much higher than MoS2. Furthermore, we present preliminary but convincing experimental evidence for the layering behavior of Te on HOPG substrates, and predict the importance of multivalency in the layering behavior of Se. These findings effectively extend the realm of 2D materials to group-VI elements.

Alternaria yunnanensis sp. nov., a New Alternaria Species Causing Foliage Spot of Rubber Tree in China

        ( Zhi-ying Cai ),( Yi-xian Liu ),( Yu-ping Shi ),( Li-ming Dai ),( Lan-lan Li ),( Hong-jun Mu ),( Mei-lin Lv ),( Xiao-yong Liu ) 한국균학회 2019 Mycobiology Vol.47 No.1

A new species of Alternaria causing leaf spots on the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) in Yunnan, China, was isolated, examined, and illustrated. Morphologically, it belongs to the section Porri of Alternaria, which produces relatively large conidia and a simple or branched, filamentous long beak. It is, however, characterized by conidiophores gradually enlarging near the apex into a clavate conidiogenous cell and long ellipsoid to obclavate, smoothwalled conidia with a long filamentous beak. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS rDNA, GAPDH, and TEF1-alpha sequences demonstrate that the phytopathogen falls in the clade of the section Porri, being most closely related to A. sidae, A. sennae, A. deseriticola, A. cyamopsidis, A. rostellata, A. nitrimali, A. crassa, and A. thunbergiae.

Protraction of mandibular molars through a severely atrophic edentulous space in a case of juvenile periodontitis

        Jian-chao Wu,Yu-ting Zheng,Yi-jun Dai 대한치과교정학회 2020 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.50 No.2

Moving the mandibular posterior teeth into a severely atrophic edentulous space is a challenge. A carefully designed force-and-moment system that results in bodily protraction of the posterior teeth with balanced bone resorption and apposition is needed in such cases. This report describes the treatment of a 19-year-old woman with missing mandibular first molars due to juvenile periodontitis. Miniscrews were used as absolute anchorage during protraction of the mandibular second and third molars. Bodily mesial movement of the mandibular second and third molars was achieved over a distance of 11 to 17 mm after 39 months of orthodontic treatment. [Korean J Orthod 2020;50(2):145-154]
