We studied the protective effect of Echinacea purpurea against radiation by evaluating changes in the peripheral blood cell count and peripheral blood antioxidant activity. Echinacea purpurea administration had a suppressive effect on radiation-induced leukopenia, especially on lymphocytes and monocytes and resulted in a faster recovery of blood cell counts. Mouse peripheral blood antioxidant activity was increased by Echinacea purpurea, and a relationship between the suppressive effect on radiation-induced leukopenia and the antioxidant effect was suggested.
한국 폐경여성에서 저밀도 지단백 수용체 관계 단백 5 유전자의 단일염기유전자다형성과 골량 사이의 연관성에 관한 연구

연구목적: 한국 폐경여성에서 저밀도 지단백 수용체 관계 단백 5 (low density lipoprotein receptor-related proteins 5; LRP5) 유전자 다형성양상과 골밀도사이에 연관성이 있는가를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구재료 및 방법: 자연폐경여성 261명에서 LRP5 유전자 내 A314G, T2268C, GInv17-30A 다형성 양상을 제한절편길이다형성 (restriction fragment length polymorphism; RFLP)으로 분석하고 혈청 CrossLaps (CTX), osteocalcin, bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), calcitonin, 부갑상선호르몬 (parathyroid hormone; PTH), 칼슘, 인 농도를 각각 효소면역법, 면역측정법, 원자흡광법으로, 요추 및 대퇴 근위부에서의 골밀도를 이중에너지 엑스레이 흡수계측기 (DXA)로 측정하였다. 결 과: LRP 유전자 내 A314G, T2268C 다형성양상에 의한 유전자형은 AA 83.1%, AG 14.9%, GG 1.9%, CC 50.2%, CT 43.3%, TT 6.5%이었으며, GInv17-30A의 경우 GG 76.2%, GA 20.7%, AA 3.1%이었다. 이러한 다형성양상에 의한 단일 유전자형 또는 haplotype 유전자형에 따른 요추 및 근위 대퇴부에서의 골밀도에서는 차이가 없었다. 혈청 PTH 농도가 A314G 다형성의 GG 유전자형에서 AA 유전자형 또는 AG 유전자형 보다 높다는 것 이외에 다른 단일 유전자형 또는 haplotype 유전자형과 골의 생화학적 인자 농도사이에는 연관성이 없었다. 결 론: 한국 자연폐경 여성에서 LRP5 유전자 내 A314G, T2268C 및 GInv17-30A 다형성양상은 골밀도에 영향을 주지 않는다. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) gene polymorphisms and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal Korean women. Methods: The A314G, T2268C, and G Inv17-30 A polymorphisms in LRP5 gene were analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism in 261 postmenopausal Korean women. Serum CrossLaps (CTX), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin, calcium, and phosphorus levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, immunoassay and by atomic absorptiometry respectively. The BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal femur was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results: The distributions of A314G, T2268C, and G Inv17-30 A polymorphisms in LRP5 gene were as follows; AA 83.1%, AG 14.9%, GG 1.9%, CC 50.2%, CT 43.3%, TT 6.5%, GG 76.2%, GA 20.7%, and AA 3.1%. No significant differences in adjusted BMD of lumbar spine and femoral neck were noted among single or haplotype genotypes of LRP5 gene polymorphisms. No statistical significances in associations between serum levels of bone biochemical markers except PTH and single or haplotype genotypes were observed. Serum PTH levels in women with GG genotype of A314G polymorphism was significantly higher than those in women with AA or AG genotype. Conclusion: The A314G, T2268C, and G Inv17-30 A polymorphisms in LRP5 gene do not affect BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal femur in postmenopausal Korean women.

The technique and results of infratemporal fossa approach of jugular foramen neuroma and clivus chordoma are presented. The infratemporal fossa approach allowed radical removal of jugualr foramen neuroma and effective palliative removal of clivus chordoma. The basic features of infratemporal fossa approach are permanent anterior displacement of the facial verve, subtotal petrosectomy and obliteration of the middle ear cleft.
The Processing Optimization of Caviar Analogs Encapsulated by Calcium-Alginate Gel Membranes

We prepared caviar analogs encapsulated by calcium-alginate gel membranes as a means to replace higher priced natural caviars. Processing the caviar analogs (beluga type) was optimized by response surface methodology with central composite design. Concentrations of sodium alginate (X<sub>1</sub>) and CaCl<sub>2</sub> (X<sub>2</sub>) were chosen as the independent variables. In order to compare characteristics of the caviar analogs with the natural caviar, sphericity (Y<sub>1</sub>), diameter (Y<sub>2</sub>), membrane thickness (Y<sub>3</sub>), rupture strength (Y<sub>4</sub>), rupturing deformation (Y<sub>5</sub>), and sensory score (Y<sub>6</sub>) were used as the dependent variables. The sphericity of the caviar analogs showed a similar value to that of natural caviar (over 94%) in the range of independent variables. Generally, the CaCl<sub>2</sub> concentration (X<sub>2</sub>) affected all dependent variables to a greater extent than the sodium alginate concentration (X<sub>1</sub>). For the multiple response optimization of the 5 dependent variables (Y<sub>1</sub>, Y<sub>2</sub>, Y<sub>4</sub>, Y<sub>5</sub>, and Y<sub>6</sub>), the desirability function was defined as the following conditions: target values (Y<sub>1</sub> = 100%, Y<sub>2</sub> = 3.0 mm, Y<sub>4</sub> = 1,470 g, Y<sub>5</sub> = 1.1 mm, and Y<sub>6</sub> = 10 points). Membrane thickness (Y<sub>3</sub>) was eliminated from the dependent variables for multiple response optimization because it could not be measured with an image analyzer. The values of the independent variables as evaluated by multiple response optimization were X<sub>1</sub> = -0.093 (0.78%) and X<sub>2</sub> = -0.322 (1.07%), respectively.
사과 추출물의 구취억제효과에 대한 Polyphenol Oxidase의 영향

본 연구는 사과의 구취억제인자를 구명하기 위한 기초자료로써 사과 추출물의 획분에 따른 사과에서 추출한 PPO의 methyl mercaptan에 대한 구취억제활성을 조사하였다. 사과를 착즙하여 구취억제활성을 측정해 본 결과, 사과 고형분의 농도가 증가함에 따라 구취억제활성이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 사과의 저분자획분에 PPO를 첨가한 경우, 저분자획분의 농도증가 및 반응시간에 따른 methyl mercaptan에 대한 구취억제활성이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 이상의 결과는 사과에서 추출한 PPO에 의한 갈변반응의 중간체로 생성되는 o-quinone이 methyl mercaptan과 결합하여 methyl mercaptan을 비휘발성으로 전환시켜 구취억제활성을 나타내는 것으로 생각된다. Deodorizing activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) extracted from apples was investigated by measuring the changes of methyl mercaptan as an indicator of halitosis in human mouths. In the studies of apple extracts on deodorizing activity, the deodorizing activity was increased with the amount of apple extracts. In the cases of adding PPO to the low molecular fraction of apple extracts, the deodorizing activities were increased with the amount of the low molecular fraction of apple extracts and the reaction time of the extracts with PPO. Deodorizing activities of PPO is thought that o-quinone as an intermidiate produced by an oxidative reaction of PPO during enzymatic browning reactions may react with methyl mercaptan to form a non-volatile and sulfur-containing compound.
