        Soil pH and electrical conductivity are key edaphic factors shaping bacterial communities of greenhouse soils in Korea

        Soil microorganisms play an essential role in soil ecosystem processes such as organic matter decomposition, nutrient cycling, and plant nutrient availability. The land use for greenhouse cultivation has been increasing continuously, which involves an intensive input of agricultural materials to enhance productivity; however, relatively little is known about bacterial communities in greenhouse soils. To assess the effects of environmental factors on the soil bacterial diversity and community composition, a total of 187 greenhouse soil samples collected across Korea were subjected to bacterial 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing analysis. A total of 11,865 operational taxonomic units at a 97% similarity cutoff level were detected from 847,560 sequences. Among nine soil factors evaluated; pH, electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+), available P2O5, organic matter, and NO3-N, soil pH was most strongly correlated with bacterial richness (polynomial regression, pH: R2 = 0.1683, P < 0.001) and diversity (pH: R2 = 0.1765, P < 0.001). Community dissimilarities (Bray-Curtis distance) were positively correlated with Euclidean distance for pH and EC (Mantel test, pH: r = 0.2672, P < 0.001; EC: r = 0.1473, P < 0.001). Among dominant phyla (> 1%), the relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Planctomycetes were also more strongly correlated with pH and EC values, compared with other soil cation contents, such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+. Our results suggest that, despite the heterogeneity of various environmental variables, the bacterial communities of the intensively cultivated greenhouse soils were particularly influenced by soil pH and EC. These findings therefore shed light on the soil microbial ecology of greenhouse cultivation, which should be helpful for devising effective management strategies to enhance soil microbial diversity and improving crop productivity.

        Isotretinoin을 복용하는 여드름 환자에서 γ-Linolenic Acid 병용요법이 건조증 예방과 여드름 병변에 미치는 영향

        Background: Oral isotretinoin is an effective treatment modality for acne, but this agent may cause dryness of the skin and mucous membrane. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) has been known to improve skin moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It is also known to have anti-inflammatory effects and to inhibit 5-alpha reductase. Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of GLA in the prevention of xerosis and improvement of acne lesions after concomitant administration of isotretinoin. Methods: In this prospective study, 102 Korean acne patients were enrolled and randomized to receive isotretinoin either with or without GLA for 12 weeks. Comparing evaluations included skin hydration, TEWL, visual analogue scale (VAS) score for dryness of the lips and skin, number of acne lesions such as comedos, papules, and pustules, Korean acne grading system (KAGS) grade, and patient satisfaction regarding treatment. Results: The decrease of skin hydration and increase of the TEWL of the lips and cheek were less definite in the experimental group than those of the control group. VAS score for dryness of the lips and skin was significantly lower in the experimental group compared with the control group. The number of acne lesions decreased in both groups; only the numbers of papules were different between the two groups. The decrease of the KAGS grade was more definite in the experimental group than that in the control group. Conclusion: This study suggests that GLA could be used effectively for the improvement of acne lesions as well as for the prevention of xerosis. (Korean J Dermatol 2013;51(11):863∼870)

        A Study on the Correlation Analysis between the Daily Earthwork Volume and Fine Dust Concentration

        Purpose: Fine dust is classified as a group 1 carcinogen and poses a significant environmental problem that urgently requires improvement to protect the environmental rights of citizens. Given the difficulty of implementing measures to reduce overseas sources of fine dust, it is essential to first devise specific measures to address domestic emission sources. As such, this study aims to analyze the correlation between earthwork volume control and fine dust concentration as preliminary management measures to reduce the impact of scattering dust at construction sites. Based on real-time air quality information, field management measures will be presented to mitigate the effects of dust emissions. Research design, data and methodology: As examples, we selected construction sites that had recently undergone small-scale environmental impact assessment consultations. The standard earthwork volume was classified into grades using 20% intervals, and we applied AERMOD to predict the weighted concentration of fine dust based on the earthwork volume class and analyzed its correlation. Results: The results of this study demonstrate a strong correlation between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration. By utilizing the correlation analysis between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration on-site, this finding can be utilized as an effective fine dust management plan. Conclusions: This involves determining the daily earthwork intensity based on real-time air quality information and implementing measures to reduce scattering dust.

        고성 이씨 소장 『해도교거사』의 국어학적 가치

        이 연구는 『해도교거사』를 소개하고 창작자와 창작시기를 고증하며, 내용에 드러난 국어학적 특성을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 『해도교거사』는 한글로 표기된 내방가사로서 대한민국임시정부 초대 국무령을 지낸 석주 이상룡의 부인인 김우락이 만주로 망명하여 창작한 작품이다. 가사의 말미 부분이 훼손되어 창작자와 창작 시기에 관한 기록이 없지만 가 사의 내용을 토대로 추정이 가능하다. 『해도교거사』는 1911년(辛亥年) 가을 유 하현(柳河縣) 영춘원(永春源)에 정착한 직후에 창작되었으며 따라서 현재까지 알려진 만주 망명지 가사 중 최초의 작품이 된다. 안동에서 출발하여 압록강을 건너는 망명의 경로를 비롯하여 만주 영춘원에 이르는 정착의 과정이 매우 세밀하게 나타나 있어 중요한 사료적 가치가 있다. 또한 작가가 1913~1914년에 창작한 『간운□』, 『조손별서』와 동일하게 망명지에서 독립운동을 함께 한 여성들의 역경과 고난이 잘 드러나 있다. 『해도교거사』에는 개화기 국어의 국어학적 특징이 반영된 표기가 드러나며, 특히 국내외의 지명과 시대 상황을 반영한 어휘는 물론 작가가 60여 년을 생활한 안동지역의 여러 방언이 나타난다. ‘Haedogyogeosa”, which is a ‘gasa’, a form of prose during Joseon dynasty. The summary of the study is as following. Haedogyogeosa is a ‘gasa’ written in Hangeul by a lady. The lady is Kim U-rak, who was the wife of Seokju Yi Sang-ryong. Yi Sang-ryong was the first Gukmuryeong, the head, of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai. Kim U-rak wrote this gasa when she was in Manchuria as an exile. The gasa was written immediately after Kim U-rak settled in Yeongchunwon (永春源) in Yuhahyeon (柳河縣), when was the fall of the year 1911 (辛亥年). Therefore, the Haedogyogeosa is the earliest one among the gasa’s known to have been written by Koreans in Manchuria in exile. Kim U-rak also wrote other gasa’s such as Ganwunsa and Jyosonbyeolseo in 1913 and 1914. Like these two gasa’s, the Haedogyogeosa describes the hardship and adversity suffered by the ladies, who participated in independence movement in exile. The gasa is an important one because it has historical value by describing the route of exile and the process of settlement until they arrived at Yeongchunwon in very minute detail. There are Hangeul writings which reflect the characteristics of Korean linguistics at the late 19th century. The geographical names of Korean and overseas and the vocabularies reflected the time also include various dialects of Andong area, where Kim U-rak lived more than 60 years.

        항암화학요법을 받은 입원 암환자의 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 요인

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between quality of sleep, symptom cluster, depression, environmental disorder, and quality of life among hospitalized cancer patients. Methods: The subjects were 114 patients who underwent chemotherapy for colon cancer, gastric cancer, gynecologic cancer and breast cancer. They were recruited from the cancer center of a university hospital. Data were collected from August 4th to 30th, 2011. The questionnaires included the Korean sleep scale A (quality of sleep), MDASI-K (symptom cluster), the environmental sleep disturbing scale, Zung's depression scale, and the Korean version of EORTC QLQ-C30. The collected data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Functional QOL was negatively associated with symptom QOL (r=-.798, p<.001). Symptom cluster, depression, & spouse (46.3%) were the most powerful predictors for functional QOL (46.3%) and symptom QOL (53.4%). Conclusion: It is evident that oncology nurses need to evaluate two dimensions of quality of life for cancer patients, for example, functional and symptom QOL. We recommend nurses develop specific protocols for relieving physical symptoms and alleviating depression, and furthermore test the effectiveness of them.

        파랑작용하에서 개별요소법을 이용한 잠제 전면의 초기 모래이동 분석

        In this study, the two-way coupled numerical model used to scour and deposition in front of an submerged breakwater using a Numerical Wave Tank(NWT) and Discrete Element Method(DEM) for initial sediment transport. The two-way coupled analysis used in this study can not only consider the interaction among the wave, structure, and ground but also represent sand behaviors in front of an submerged breakwater under waves. The validity and usefulness of th Discrete Element Method(DEM) was ensured by comparing initial scour depth due to time in front of an submerged breakwater with the results of a experiment. In the two-way coupled analysis, characteristics of initial sand behaviors in front of submerged breakwater were numerically analyzed according to the installation of an incident wave and impermeable submerged breakwater. Finally, this study is applicable to prediction of scour and deposition due to initial sand behavior.

        소동물 Iodine-125 SPECT 개발을 위한 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션

        목적: I-125는 저에너지(27-35 keV) 방사선을 방출하기 때문에 두께가 얇은 섬광결정과 조준기를 사용할 수 있어 고분해능, 고민감도 영상획득에 유리한 물리적 특성을 가지고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 새로운 시뮬레이션 도구인 GATE (Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission)를 사용하여 최적의 I-125 SPECT 시스템 파라미터를 도출하는 것이다. 대상 및 방법: 시뮬레이션 방법의 신뢰성을 검증하기 위해, Weisenberger 등이 개발한 감사카메라 시스템을 모사하였다. 섬광채로 평판형 Mal(Tl)을 사용하였으며, 두께는 검출효율을 계산해서 결정하였다. 평행구멍조준기와 바늘구멍조준기의 여러 파라미터가 공간분해능과 민감도에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 그리고 최적화된 조준기를 결합한 I-125 SPECT의 성능을 평가하였다. 결과: 시뮬레이션에 대한 신뢰성 검증연구 결과, 측정과 시뮬레이션에서 공간분해능(4%)과 민감도(3%)가 유사함을 확인하였다. Nal(Tl) 두깨는 I-125 감마선을 98% 검출할 수 있도록 1 mm로 결정하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과 고분해능 평행구멍조준기로 구멍크기가 0.2 mm이고 길이가 5 mm인 사각구멍조준기를 선택하였고, 범용 평행구멍조준기로 구멍크기가 0.5 mm이고, 길이가 10 mm인 육각구멍조준기를 선택하였다. 바늘구멍주준기는 구멍지름이 0.25 mm이고 채널높이가 0.1 mm이며, 허용각도가 90도인 조준기를 선택하였다. 최적화된 고분해능 평행구멍조준기, 범용 평행구멍조준기, 바늘구멍조준기를 결합한 I-125 SPECT의 재구성 영상 공간분해능은 각각 1.2mm, 1.7 mm, 0.8 mm이였으며, 민감도는 39.7 cps/MBq, 71.9 cps/MBq, 5.5 cps/MBq이었다. 결론: GATE 시뮬레이션으로 I-125 영상에 적합한 섬광결정 파라미터 및 조준기 파라미터를 도출하였다. 이 연구결과는 I-125 SPECT로 탁월한 고분해능, 고민감도 영상을 얻을 수 있음을 보여준다. Purpose: Since 1-125 emits low energy (27-35 keV) radiation, thinner crystal and collimator could be employed and, hence, it is favorable to obtain high quality images. The purpose of this study was to derive the optimized parameters of 1-125 SPECT using a new simulation tool, GATE (Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission). Materials and Methods: To validate the simulation methods, gamma camera developed by Weisenberger et al. was modeled. Nal(Tl) plate crystal was used and its thickness was determined by calculating detection efficiency. Spatial resolution and sensitivity curves were estimated by changing variable parameters for parallel-hold and pinhole collimator. Performances of 1-125 SPECT equipped with the optimal colimator were also estimated. Results: In the validation study, simulations were found to agree well with experimental measurements in spatial resolution (4%) and sensitivity (3%). In order to acquire 98% gamma ray detection efficiency, Nal(Tl) thickness was determined to be 1 mm. Hole diameter (mm), length (mm) and shape were chosen to be 0.2:5:square and 0.5:10:hexagonal for high resolution (HR) and general purpose (GP) parallel-hole collimator, respectively. Hole diameter, channel height and acceptance angle of pinhole (PH) collimator were determined to be 0.25 mm, 0.1 mm and 90 degree. The spatial resolutions of reconstructed image of the 1-125 SPECT employing HR:GP:PH were 1.2:1.7:0.8 mm. The sensitivities of HR:GP:PH were 39.7:71.9:5.5 첸/MBq. Conclusion: The optimal crystal and collimator parameters for 1-125 imaging were derived by simulation using GATE. The results indicate that excellent resolution and sensitivity imaging is feasible using 1-125 SPECT.

      • <b>Wearable solar thermoelectric generator driven by unprecedentedly high temperature difference</b>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Converting body heat into electricity using flexible thermoelectric generators can be useful for self-powered wearable electronic devices. However, the temperature difference that can be obtained by body heat is insufficient, which limits its practical applications. In this study, we present a wearable solar thermoelectric generator driven by a significantly high temperature difference created by introducing a local solar absorber and thermoelectric legs on a polyimide substrate. The solar absorber is a five-period Ti/MgF<SUB>2</SUB> superlattice, in which the structure and thickness of each layer was designed for optimal absorption of sunlight. The thermoelectric legs were prepared by dispenser printing with an ink consisting of mechanically alloyed BiTe-based powders and an Sb<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB>-based sintering additive dispersed in glycerol. Thermoelectric p- and n-type legs have electrical conductivities of ~ 25,000Sm<SUP>−1</SUP> with Seebeck coefficients of 166.37 and −116.38μVK<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively. When exposed to sunlight, a wearable solar thermoelectric generator comprising 10 pairs of p-n legs has an open-circuit voltage of 55.15mV and an output power of 4.44μW. The temperature difference is as high as 20.9°C, which is much higher than the typical temperature differences of 1.5–4.1°C of wearable thermoelectric generators driven by body heat. The wearable solar thermoelectric generators have been demonstrated on various surfaces exposed to sunlight, such as clothes or windows.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> First demonstration of flexible solar thermoelectric generators. </LI> <LI> A solar absorber, Ti/MgF<SUB>2</SUB> superlattice, generates ΔT as high as 20.9°C on a PI substrate. </LI> <LI> BiTe-based TE legs are dispenser-printed and mechanically enhanced by Parylene coating. </LI> <LI> This design is the key to accelerating the application of wearable thermoelectric generators. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The wearable solar thermoelectric generator in this study proposes a promising way to further improve the efficiency by raising the temperature difference.
