Design and evaluation of a distributed TDR moisture sensor

Bin Zhang,Xinbao Yu,Xiong Yu 국제구조공학회 2010 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.6 No.9

This paper describes the development and evaluation of an innovative TDR distributed moisture sensor. This sensor features advantages of being responsive to the spatial variations of the soil moisture content. The geometry design of the sensor makes it rugged for field installation. Good linear calibration is obtained between the sensor measured dielectric constant and soil physical properties. Simulations by the finite element method (FEM) are conducted to assist the design of this sensor and to determine the effective sampling range. Compared with conventional types of moisture sensor, which only makes point measurement, this sensor possesses distributed moisture sensing capability. This new sensor is not only easy to install, but also measures moisture distribution with much lower cost. This new sensor holds promise to significantly improve the current field instruments. It will be a useful tool to help study the influence of a variety of moisture-related phenomena on infrastructure performance.

Learning Discriminative Fisher Kernel for Image Retrieval

( Bin Wang ),( Xiong Li ),( Yuncai Liu ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2013 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.7 No.3

Content based image retrieval has become an increasingly important research topic for its wide application. It is highly challenging when facing to large-scale database with large variance. The retrieval systems rely on a key component, the predefined or learned similarity measures over images. We note that, the similarity measures can be potential improved if the data distribution information is exploited using a more sophisticated way. In this paper, we propose a similarity measure learning approach for image retrieval. The similarity measure, so called Fisher kernel, is derived from the probabilistic distribution of images and is the function over observed data, hidden variable and model parameters, where the hidden variables encode high level information which are powerful in discrimination and are failed to be exploited in previous methods. We further propose a discriminative learning method for the similarity measure, i.e., encouraging the learned similarity to take a large value for a pair of images with the same label and to take a small value for a pair of images with distinct labels. The learned similarity measure, fully exploiting the data distribution, is well adapted to dataset and would improve the retrieval system. We evaluate the proposed method on Corel-1000, Corel5k, Caltech101 and MIRFlickr 25,000 databases. The results show the competitive performance of the proposed method.

Bio-Inspired Object Recognition Using Parameterized Metric Learning

( Xiong Li ),( Bin Wang ),( Yuncai Liu ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2013 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.7 No.4

Computing global features based on local features using a bio-inspired framework has shown promising performance. However, for some tough applications with large intra-class variances, a single local feature is inadequate to represent all the attributes of the images. To integrate the complementary abilities of multiple local features, in this paper we have extended the efficacy of the bio-inspired framework, HMAX, to adapt heterogeneous features for global feature extraction. Given multiple global features, we propose an approach, designated as parameterized metric learning, for high dimensional feature fusion. The fusion parameters are solved by maximizing the canonical correlation with respect to the parameters. Experimental results show that our method achieves significant improvements over the benchmark bio-inspired framework, HMAX, and other related methods on the Caltech dataset, under varying numbers of training samples and feature elements.

      • Directed Evolution of Beta-galactosidase from Escherichia coli into Beta-glucuronidase

        Xiong, Ai-Sheng,Peng, Ri-He,Zhuang, Jing,Liu, Jin-Ge,Xu, Fang,Cai, Bin,Guo, Zhao-Kui,Qiao, Yu-Shan,Chen, Jian-Min,Zhang, Zhen,Yao, Quan-Hong Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.3

In vitro directed evolution through DNA shuffling is a powerful molecular tool for creation of new biological phenotypes. E. coli $\beta$-galactosidase and $\beta$-glucuronidase are widely used, and their biological function, catalytic mechanism, and molecular structures are well characterized. We applied an in vitro directed evolution strategy through DNA shuffling and obtained five mutants named YG6764, YG6768, YG6769, YG6770 and YG6771 after two rounds of DNA shuffling and screening, which exhibited more $\beta$-glucuronidase activity than wild-type $\beta$-galactosidase. These variants had mutations at fourteen nucleic acid sites, resulting in changes in ten amino acids: S193N, T266A, Q267R, V411A, D448G, G466A, L527I, M543I, Q626R and Q951R. We expressed and purified those mutant proteins. Compared to the wild-type protein, five mutant proteins exhibited high $\beta$-glucuronidase activity. The comparison of molecular models of the mutated and wildtype enzymes revealed the relationship between protein function and structural modification.

      • Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer in Rural Areas of Wuhan China: a Matched Case-control Study

        Zhang, Bin,Zhou, Ai-Fen,Zhu, Chang-Cai,Zhang, Ling,Xiang, Bing,Chen, Zhong,Hu, Rong-Hua,Zhang, Ya-Qi,Qiu, Lin,Zhang, Yi-Ming,Xiong, Chao-Du,Du, Yu-Kai,Shi, Yu-Qin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Cervical cancer is a serious public health problem in developing countries. We investigated possible risk factors for cervical cancer in rural areas of Wuhan China using a matched case-control study with 33 women diagnosed with cervical cancer and 132 healthy women selected from the same area as matched controls. A questionnaire, which included questions about general demography conditions, environmental and genetic factors, the first sexual intercourse, first marriage age, age at first pregnancy, pregnancy first child's age, female personal health history, social psychological factors, dietary habits, smoking and alcohol status and other living habits was presented to all participants. At the same time, HPV infection of every participant was examined in laboratory testing. Results showed HPV infection (P<0.000, OR=23.4) and pregnancy first child's age (P<0.000, OR=13.1) to be risk factors for cervical cancer. Menopause (P=0.003, OR=0.073) was a protective factor against cervical cancer. However, there was no indication of associations of environmental (drinking water, insecticide, disinfectant) genetic (cancer family history), or life-style factors (smoking status, alcohol status, physical training, sleep quality), including dietary habits (intake of fruit and vegetable, meat, fried food, bean products and pickled food) or social psychological factors with cervical cancer. The results suggest that the risk of cervical cancer in Chinese rural women may be associated with HPV infection, menopause and the pregnancy first child's age.

Motor Model-based Optimal Robust Guaranteed Cost Control for Two-motor Web-winding System

        Hongyun Xiong,Yipeng Lv,Bin Cheng,Xiaohong Nian,Xiaoyan Chu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.11

In this paper, a novel comprehensive model for the two-motor web-winding system is proposed, which combines the classical web-winding system model with the driven-motor model. Based on the proposed model, the state feedback robust control (SFRC) strategy is designed to handle systematic uncertainty and time-varying parameters. And then in order to reduce the control cost of the web-winding system, an optimal robust guaranteed cost control (ORGCC) approach is studied. First, the reference control inputs and error dynamic model are derived based on the proposed comprehensive model. Then, the SFRC strategy and ORGCC approach are designed to calculate control compensation. By regarding some suitable parameters as interval variables, the proposed controllers have good robustness for parameter variations and environmental disturbance. Finally, the simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and control.

Inhibition of cancer cell growth and migration by dihydroxynaphthyl aryl ketones

        Wei Xiong,Yun-Feng Li,Shan Liu,Ting Chen,Hong-Tao Zhang,Zhi-Bin Yang,Ying-Ying Ding,De-Pei Gao,Guan-Shun Wang,Jian Dong,Jian Dong 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2016 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.12 No.4

Dihydroxynaphthyl aryl ketones 1-5 exhibit activity as tubulin polymerization inhibitors by targeting the colchicine binding site of microtubules making them potential anticancer drugs. Therefore, analogues 1-5 have been evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against the cancer cell lines DU-145 (prostate), T24 (bladder) and MCF-7 (breast). notable differences in biological activity were observed for compounds 1-5, most likely related to the nature of the aryl substituent bonded to the carbonyl group. among the tested compounds, only compound 5 showed selectivity for cancer cells over healthy, non-transformed cells. T24 cancer cells treated with compound 5 presented a concentration-dependent decrease in cell proliferation and a loss of migration ability. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1-5 on the selected cell-based assays is discussed in terms of it lipophilicity and polarizability parameters.

Study on Volume Stability of Chemical Foaming Cement Paste

        Wen-bin Liu,Xiong Zhang 대한토목학회 2017 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.21 No.7

The paper is aimed at investigating the mechanism and cause of volume instability of chemical foaming cement paste. Volume stability were studied by introducing ultimate shear stress of the technical parameter. The research shows that the ultimate shear stress should be between 25 Pa and 40 Pa when the paste was mixed for 30 minutes, and the ultimate shear stress reached 75 Pa when the paste was mixed for 2 hours. The paste is not easy to collapse, sink. By force analyzing of the paste, mathematical model of the paste was established. The ultimate shear stress was controlled by water-binder ratio, quick setting agent and foam stabilizer. The result shows that the water-binder ratio is 0.54~0.58, the setting accelerator is 2% of cement content, and the foam stabilizer is 1.6% of cement content, which played an important role in the volume stability of the paste.
