        Adverse effects of subchronic exposure to cooking oil fumes on the gonads and the GPR30‑mediated signaling pathway in female rats

        Background Cooking oil fumes (COFs) are composed of particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, aldehydes, and ketones, and are currently a global health concern. Some agents in COFs are mutagenic and carcinogenic. However, only a few reports have addressed the hazardous effects of COF exposure on the female reproductive system. In this study, we explored the effects of subchronic exposure to COFs on female gonads in vivo and the possible involvement of the G-protein-coupled receptor 30 signaling pathway. Methods COFs were generated by heating commercially available canola oil in an iron pot. Adult female Wistar rats at 2 months of age were exposed to COFs at 32 mg/m3 for 0, 0.5, 1, 2, or 4 h/day for 56 days. The estrous cycle in rats was studied twice at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the 43rd treatment day until the current estrous cycle was complete. The rat body weight was measured before the experiment and at day 56 post-exposure. At the end of the experiment, rat blood was collected for gonadal hormone assay, and ovaries were collected for histology and mRNA isolation. The mRNA levels of GPR30, EGFR, STAT3, and ERK were determined by quantitative RT-PCR. Results At a concentration of 32.21 ± 5.11 mg/m3, COF exposure extended the estrous cycle in rats, and ovary coefficient decreased. COFs showed various effects on the sex hormone levels and follicles, depending on its exposure level. Exposure to COFs led to the changes in mRNA levels of the G-protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Conclusion This study indicated that cooking oil fume exposure disrupted the estrous cycle, sex hormone patterns, and follicle development in female rats in a dose-dependent manner. These adverse effects of cooking oil fumes on female reproductive health were correlated with the G-protein-coupled receptor 30-mediated signaling pathway.

        The effects of substrate temperatures on the electrical properties of CaZrO3 thin films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering

        The radio frequency magnetron sputtering technology (RFMS) was employed to deposit perovskite structure orthogonal phase CaZrO3 thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The effects of substrate temperatures on structure and electrical properties of these films were investigated in detail. The CaZrO3 thin films were systematically characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Multifrequency LCR meter (HP4294A) and Radiant Precision Workstation to study the phase structure, cross-section morphology, dielectric and ferroelectric properties at different substrate temperatures. The result indicates that these films can withstand 80 V DC Bias voltage and have excellent stability of frequency, voltage and temperature. The CaZrO3 thin film prepared at 550 °C turned out to be mainly orthorhombic CaZrO3 phase with high permittivity, low dielectric loss, extremely low leakage current (at 1 MHz, the dielectric constant is 39.42, the dielectric loss is 0.00455, the quality factor is 220 and the leakage current density is 9.11 × 10−7A/cm2 at 80 V applied voltage.). This work demonstrates that higher substrate temperature can boost the formation of orthorhombic CaZrO3 phase and the CaZrO3 thin film prepared by RF magnetron sputtering is a very promising paraelectric material in the application of thin film capacitor.

        Short- and long-term analyses of shear lag in RC box girders considering axial equilibrium

        An analytical method considering axial equilibrium is proposed for the short- and long-term analyses of shear lag effect in reinforced concrete (RC) box girders. The axial equilibrium of box girders is taken into account by using an additional generalized displacement, referred to as the longitudinal displacement of the web. Three independent shear lag functions are introduced to describe different shear lag intensities of the top, bottom, and cantilever plates. The time-dependent material properties of the concrete are simulated by the age-adjusted effective modulus method (AEMM), while the reinforcement is assumed to behave in a linear-elastic fashion. The differential equations are derived based on the longitudinal displacement of the web, the vertical displacement of the cross section, and the shear lag functions of the flanges. The time-dependent expressions of the generalized displacements are then deduced for box girders subjected to uniformly distributed loads. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated against the finite element results regarding the short- and long-term responses of a simply-supported RC box girder. Furthermore, creep analyses considering and neglecting shrinkage are performed to quantify the time effects on the long-term behavior of a continuous RC box girder. The results show that the proposed method can well evaluate both the short- and long-term behavior of box girders, and that concrete shrinkage has a considerable impact on the concrete stresses and internal forces, while concrete creep can remarkably affect the long-term deflections.

        High-resolution Anorectal Manometry in the Diagnosis of Functional Defecation Disorder in Patients With Functional Constipation: A Retrospective Cohort Study

        Background/Aims High-resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM) has been considered a first-line diagnostic tool for functional defecation disorder. However, clinical studies on HRAM used in constipation patients are very limited and few studies have reported the characteristics of anorectal pressure in Chinese patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of motility data in a cohort of Chinese patients with functional constipation. Methods A total of 82 consecutive patients with functional constipation who underwent a standardized HRAM were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The functional defecation disorder was classified into Rao’s types. Results The mean age of 82 patients was 51 years (range, 16–83 years). Indications for anorectal manometry were functional constipation for all patients. The mean resting pressure was 69.2 ± 21.2 mmHg (range, 24.5–126.9 mmHg). The mean maximum squeezing pressure was 198.4 ± 75.6 mmHg (range, 54.2–476.9 mmHg). The mean length of the anal high pressure zone was 3.4 ± 1.0 cm (range, 0.6–4.9 cm). Sixty (73.2%) patients were diagnosed as functional defecation disorder. In attempted defecation, type I was most common (n = 24), followed by type II (n = 12), type III (n = 11), and type IV (n = 13) that were present on HRAM according to Rao’s classification. In all 60 patients with functional defecation disorder, 37 were women and 23 were men. Men were significantly more likely than women to have functional defecation disorder (92.0% vs 64.9%, P = 0.014). Conclusion HRAM could be used as a test for the diagnosis of functional defecation disorder and functional defecation disorder is common in Chinese patients with functional constipation.

        Biodegradable organosilica-based targeted and redox-responsive delivery system of resveratrol for efficiently alleviating ulcerative colitis

        Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by a low redox potential in the colon. Targeting redox-responsivestrategies are highly desirable due to the capacity of improving the treatment efficiency of drugs againstUC. Resveratrol (Res), a natural ingredient, possesses prominent anti-inflammatory activity. However, thelimited bioavailability and poor water-solubility severely hinder its clinical translation. Herein, we fabricatean oral delivery carrier of Res-encapsulated tetrasulfide-containing organosilica nanoparticles(DSMSNs), functionalized by targeting component chondroitin sulfate (CS). Benefiting from smart‘‘switch” and targeted ‘‘guider”, CS shell enables high internalization and promotes selective accumulationin colon epithelial cells and macrophages through CD44-mediated pathway; meanwhile, glutathione(GSH) response-mediated rapid disassembly exhibits targeted Res release and efficient biodegradation,consequently achieving enhanced intracellular delivery of Res, improved Res-enabled treatment andrecovered gut microbial diversity in the colitis model to mitigate colonic inflammation. These findingsthus bring fresh insights into the potential of MONs in UC treatment as an oral delivery platform.

      • A Study on the Approach of the Structured Light Three-dimensional Measurement

        In order to establish the 3D Temperature Field based on structure light 3D measurement and cross-correlation registration. Infrared/Visible camera calibration method and heterologous images registration method were studied. First, according to infrared camera’s characteristics, the selection of calibration templates have been studied and the calibration of the infrared camera has been accomplished on the basis of planar calibration method; then, we simplified the two-step method based on the mature principle of structure light measurement; and the visible camera was calibrated; finally, use calibrated visible cameras to form structured light measurement system, and register the infrared image and visible image in the geometrical position. Experimental results show that: the relative error of measurement system is less than 0.3%;infrared and visible image’s alignment error in geometrical position is 0.0015 mm. and measurement systems have good reconstruction results for plane and curved ,and cross-correlation method has a good effect for heterrologous images registration.

        Study of flow instability in a centrifugal fan based on energy gradient theory

        Flow instability in a centrifugal fan was studied using energy gradient theory. Numerical simulation was performed for the threedimensional turbulent flow field in a centrifugal fan. The flow is governed by the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the RNG k-ε turbulent model. The finite volume method was used to discretize the governing equations and the Semiimplicit method for pressure linked equation (SIMPLE) algorithm is employed to iterate the system of the equations. The interior flow field in the centrifugal fan and the distribution of the energy gradient function K are obtained at different flow rates. According to the energy gradient method, the area with larger value of K is the place where the flow loses stability easier. The results show that instability is easier to generate in the regions of impeller outlet and volute tongue. The air flow near the hub is more stable than that near the shroud. That is due to the influences of variations of the velocity and the inlet angle along the axial direction. With the decrease of the flow rate, instability zone in a blade channel moves to the impeller inlet from the outlet and the unstable regions in different channels develop in opposite direction to the rotation of impeller.

        A Novel Spectral Matching LED Lighting Source for Plant

        This paper deals with the spectral matching optimization by a group of narrowband high power LEDs to achieve the target spectrum required by plant growing, the correlation index is a key evaluation criteria, higher value of which is often difficult to achieve because of the poor performance of spectral matching algorithm. The bat algorithm is proposed as a spectral matching algorithm. Parameters of bat algorithm under high correlation index are selected by observing the parameter variation tendency in the spectral matching simulation. In the experimental verification, 2 kinds of control circuit are used to match the target spectrum. Experimental results shows that appropriate parameter groups of bat algorithm must select based on their relationship with the correlation index. In practical experiment, the optimal correlation index is 0.70±0.05 under conditions of 3 selected bat algorithm parameter groups. It is of significance to plant lighting in the engineering practice exploratory.

      • Caspofungin combined with hormones as preemptive therapy of chemotherapy-induced disseminated candidiasis in a patient

        Disseminated candidiasis (DC) arising from nosocomial fungal infection is a life-threatening complication in critically ill, nonneutropenic patients. The overall nosocomial fungal infection rate in United States hospitals doubled from 1980-1990. Until recently, amphotericin B was the only agent available for the treatment of life-threatening candidal infections, but its use is plagued by toxicities including nephrotoxicity and infusion-related reactions such as rigors and hypotension. The availability of fluconazole, which is regarded more much less toxic than amphotericin B, prompted a surge in research to determine if it is as efficacious in the management of candidemia and hematogenously disseminated candidiasis. Complicating the interpretation of studies is the broad range of infection severity, from candidemia that may be transient and self-limiting to life-threatening hematogenously disseminated candidiasis. This study has used the models of Artificial neural network (ANN) and Support Vector regression (SVR) to accurately assess the clinical trials comparing fluconazole and amphotericin B demonstrate the efficacy of fluconazole for catheter-associated candidemia in critically ill patients when the likely pathogen is Candida albicans. As a result, Amphotericin B should remain the first-line agent for the management of candidemia and hematogenously disseminated candidiasis in all other patients. Also, SVR could accurately assess the efficacy of fluconazole for catheter-associated candidemia in critically ill patients.
