      • Quality of Life for Patients with Esophageal/Gastric Cardia Precursor Lesions or Cancer: A One-year Prospective Study

        Background: The current study examined health-related quality of life (QoL) for patients with esophageal/gastric cardia precursor lesions or cancer before and after treatment to facilitate improved prevention and treatment. Materials and Methods: Patients with different stages of esophageal/gastric cardia lesions completed two QoL questionnaires, EORTC QLQ-C30 and supplemental QLQ-OES 18, before primary treatment, and at 1, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Results: Fifty-nine patients with precursor lesions, 57 with early stage cancer, and 43 with advanced cancer responded to our survey. Patients with precursor lesions or early stage cancer reported better QoL overall than those with advanced cancer before treatment (p<0.01). Global QoL scores before treatment and at 1 month after treatment were $71{\pm}9$ versus $69{\pm}9$ (p>0.01), $71{\pm}8$ versus $61{\pm}11$ (p<0.01), $67{\pm}11$ versus $62{\pm}9$ (p<0.01) for three stages of lesions. At 6 months after treatment, some QoL measures recovered gradually in precursor lesion and early cancer patients, while some continuously deteriorated in advanced cancer patients. At 12 months, all QoL scores were comparable to baseline for patients with precursor lesions (p>0.01), while global QoL, social, pain, and insomnia scores for early stage and advanced cancer were inferior to corresponding baseline levels (difference between means>5, p<0.01). At this time point, compared with patients with early stage cancer, those with advanced cancer showed worse QoL with all function and most symptom measures (p<0.01). Conclusions: Patients with precursor lesions or early stage esophageal/gastric cardia cancer show better QoL than those with advanced cancer. This indicates that screening, early diagnosis and treatment may improve the QoL for esophageal/gastric cardia cancer patients. Target intervention and counseling should be given by health care providers during treatment and follow-up to facilitate QoL improvement.

        Effects of Specific Power-Loss on the Characteristics of Temperature in Magnetic Nanoparticles Subjected to External Alternating Magnetic Fields

        The variation of the specific power-loss with the anisotropy constant takes an approximately exponential form when magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are subjected to external alternating magnetic fields, and the distribution of the specific power-loss along the anisotropy constant shifts with temperature. Furthermore, the rate of increase in the temperature of MNPs used for hyperthermia depends significantly on the specific power-loss. Hence, the temperature characteristics of hyperthermia are affected by the specific power-loss. In this work, we develop a thermal model to analyze the effect of specific power-loss on temperature characteristics in MNPs uses for tumor hyperthermia. The results predicted by using the thermal model in this study are consistent with the available experimental data. The rate of increase of the temperature evidently varies at different temperatures due to different specific power-losses. An abrupt temperature rise occurs at the highest value in the distribution of the specific power-loss versus anisotropy constant. On the other hand, a slow temperature rise occurs when the intersection between the anisotropy constant of the MNPs and the specific power-loss distribution along the anisotropy constant at a some certain temperature corresponds with low specific power-loss.

        An Efficient PEG/CaCl2-Mediated Transformation Approach for the Medicinal Fungus Wolfiporia cocos

        Sclerotia of Wolfiporia cocos are of medicinal and culinary value. The genes and molecular mechanisms involved in W. cocos sclerotial formation are poorly investigated because of the lack of a suitable and reproducible transformation system for W. cocos. In this study, a PEG/ CaCl2-mediated genetic transformation system for W. cocos was developed. The promoter Pgpd from Ganoderma lucidum effectively drove expression of the hygromycin B phosphotransferase gene in W. cocos, and approximately 30 transformants were obtained per 10 μg DNA when the protoplast suspension density was 106 protoplasts/ml. However, no transformants were obtained under the regulation of the PtrpC promoter from Aspergillus nidulans.

        The basic concepts of continuous neurogen dynamics, particle and continuous mass, were cited to describe plankton ecosystems, so a continuous neurogen dynamics model of plankton ecosystem was developed by logically reasoning with less ecological experiential relation. For precise parameterization of diffusion acted on plankton by hydrodynamics, the scheme of 2-order turbulence closure of geophysical fluid dynamics was generalized to enclose the equations of plankton ecosystem dynamics model. This model was applied to simulate a natural ecological process in Jiaozhou Bay. Comparison between simulation and data showed the exciting prognosis ability of this model.

        Effect of Shadow Banking Activities on Firm Risk and Performance: Entrusted Loan Evidence from Chinese Listed Firms

        This study investigates the effect of non-financial firms’ activities in shadow banking on firm risk and performance. Using manually collected data of entrusted loans from Chinese listed firms, we find that lending firms’ bankruptcy risk and performance increases from their engagement of entrusted loan businesses in the year the loans are issued and in the following year. Further, firms’ risk increases and performance improves significantly when firms are financially healthy, financially constrained, and non-state-owned. Overall, our findings provide policy implications that the risk of shadow banking activities must be cautious.

        A randomized sham-controlled trial of manual acupuncture for infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome

        Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex polygenic disease and is one of the most common endocrinological and reproductive disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture combined with herbal medicine among infertile females with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: A total of 86 women with PCOS, experiencing infertility, were recruited and randomly assigned to receive either manual acupuncture (MA) or sham acupuncture (SA) twice per week for three menstrual cycles. Both groups received herbal medication. The evaluations were conducted after three menstrual cycles and 24 weeks’ follow-up. Results: The trial was completed by 79 (91.86%) of the 86 randomly selected patients. During this study, the pregnancy rate in the MA group (46.34%) was significantly higher than the SA group (18.42%), with a P-value of 0.008. Moreover, the ovulation rate of the MA group (58.14%) was higher than that of the SA group (45.74%), with a P-value of 0.046. The improvement rate of PCOS score and testosterone level showed a statistical difference between the two groups (P-values were <0.05). There were no other differences between the two groups. Sex hormones level, including E2, T, P, LH, and LH/FSH were significantly lower after intervention in the MA group (P-values were <0.05) compared with baseline, while only the progesterone level was reduced in the SA group (P-value = 0.008). Conclusion: Manual acupuncture combined with herbal medicine may be clinically useful for infertile women with PCOS in improving pregnancy and ovulation rate.         An investigation and forecast on CO₂ emission of China

        CO₂ emission is increasingly focused by public. Beijing and Tianjin are conceived to be a new economic point of growth in China. However, both of them are suffering serious environmental stress. In order to seek for the effect of socioeconomic factors on the CO₂ emission of this region, a novel methodology –symbolic regression– is adopted to investigate the relationship between CO₂ emission and influential factors of Beijing and Tianjin. Based on this method, CO₂ emission models of Beijing and Tianjin are built respectively. The models results manifested that Beijing and Tianjin own different CO₂ emission indicators. The RMSE of models in Beijing and Tianjin are 255.39 and 603.99, respectively. Further analysis on indicators and forecast trend shows that CO₂ emission of Beijing expresses an inverted-U shaped curve, whilst Tianjin owns a monotonically increasing trend. From analytical results, it could be argued that the diversity rooted in different development orientation and the mixture of different natural and industrial environment. This research further expands the investigation on CO₂ emission of Beijing and Tianjin region, and can be used for reference in the study of carbon emissions in similar regions. Based on the investigation, several policy suggestions are presented.

      • Mechanical behavior and chloride resistance of cementitious composites with PE and steel fiber

        The mechanical behaviors and chloride resistance performance of fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) with hybrid polyethylene (PE) and steel fiber (in total 2% by volume) were investigated. Based on micro-mechanics and fracture mechanics, the reason why the tensile strain capacity of FRCC changed obviously was obtained. Besides, the effects of the total surface area of fiber in FRCC on compressive strength and chloride content were clarified. It is found that the improvement of the tensile strain capacity of FRCC with hybrid fiber is attributed to the growth of strain-hardening performance index (the ratio of complementary energy to crack tip toughness). As the total surface area of fiber related with the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fiber and matrix increases, compressive strength decreases obviously. Since the total surface area of fiber is small, the chloride resistance performance of FRCC with hybrid PE and steel fiber is better than that of FRCC containing only PE fiber.
