Tanshinone IIA Protects Endothelial Cells from H2O2-Induced Injuries via PXR Activation

        Zhu, Haiyan,Chen, Zhiwu,Ma, Zengchun,Tan, Hongling,Xiao, Chengrong,Tang, Xianglin,Zhang, Boli,Wang, Yuguang,Gao, Yue The Korean Society of Applied Pharmacology 2017 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.25 No.6

Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) is a pharmacologically active substance extracted from the rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (also known as the Chinese herb Danshen), and is widely used to treat atherosclerosis. The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a nuclear receptor that is a key regulator of xenobiotic and endobiotic detoxification. Tan IIA is an efficacious PXR agonist that has a potential protective effect on endothelial injuries induced by xenobiotics and endobiotics via PXR activation. Previously numerous studies have demonstrated the possible effects of Tan IIA on human umbilical vein endothelial cells, but the further mechanism for its exerts the protective effect is not well established. To study the protective effects of Tan IIA against hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), we pretreated cells with or without different concentrations of Tan IIA for 24 h, then exposed the cells to $400{\mu}M$ $H_2O_2$ for another 3 h. Therefore, our data strongly suggests that Tan IIA may lead to increased regeneration of glutathione (GSH) from the glutathione disulfide (GSSG) produced during the GSH peroxidase-catalyzed decomposition of $H_2O_2$ in HUVECs, and the PXR plays a significant role in this process. Tan IIA may also exert protective effects against $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway associated with the participation of PXR. Tan IIA protected HUVECs from inflammatory mediators triggered by $H_2O_2$ via PXR activation. In conclusion, Tan IIA protected HUVECs against $H_2O_2$-induced cell injury through PXR-dependent mechanisms.

Multilingual and Multimodal Literacy Beyond School : A Case Study of an Adult Vlogger in China

Xiao Tan 아시아영어교육학회 2020 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.17 No.4

Second language literacy research in recent years has attended to emerging genres and various literacy practices. Less explored, however, are the innovative ways of meaning-making and communication facilitated by the use of multimodal resources in a foreign-language context. To bridge the gap, this study investigates how a Chinese-English bilingual speaker coordinates and orchestrates design elements in her vlogs and how decision makings are informed by various factors. Interview data and vlog analysis show that the participant is skillful in using digital technologies, anticipating audiences’ needs, fulfilling rhetorical purposes, and negotiating with constraining contextual factors. This study challenges the view that learners in an EFL country have limited opportunities to use the language due to the lack of contact with the target language community. It also suggests that EFL educators could build on what learners do on their own while encouraging them to repurpose the use of vlogs and mobile technologies.

      • Information Concealing Based on Outer P-sets

Tan Xiao-dong 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.10 No.1

Outer P-set, a new mathematic method of studying dynamic information, is a part of P-set theory. Based on the outer P-set theory, such conceptions have been put forward as principles of F -information concealing granulation degree, F -information concealing relationship, F -information concealing generation, concealing and concealing information recovery and definitions of outer-distance and concealing granulation degree. Their applications have been illustrated through simple examples in application.

Metabolic Engineering of Vitamin C Production in Arabidops

        Ling Xiao,Ying Xiao,Zinan Wang,Hexin Tan,Kexuan Tang,Lei Zhang 한국생물공학회 2015 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.20 No.4

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, AsA) is a compound which provides major nutritional value, both for plants and humans. In this study, three distinct metabolic engineering strategies, including overexpression of biosynthesis enzyme, suppression of catabolism enzyme and switching the sub-cellular localization of compartment enzyme, were employed to enhance the production of AsA in Arabidopsis thaliana. The results showed that (1) overexpression of L-Galactose-1-P Phosphatase (GalPPase) enhanced AsA content to 3.96 μmol/g FW, which was 1.6-fold more than that in their wild-type (WT) counterparts; (2) RNAi suppression of ascorbate oxidase (AO) resulted in a significant increase of AsA accumulation (0.86 μmol/g FW) in apoplast; (3) both mitochondrion-target and none-target overexpression of L-Galactose dehydrogenase (GalDH) did not significantly promote AsA production compared with WT (1.96 μmol/g), however a dramatic enhancement was observed following infiltration with L-galactono-1, 4-lactone (L-GalL), both in transgenic and WT plants. The best line produced AsA with the content of 3.90 μmol/g FW, which was about 2-fold of that in the untreated control (1.99 μmol/g FW). This study provides new strategies including GalPPase overexpression, AO suppression as well as L-GalL feeding for modern breeding aimed at stimulating the AsA content in plants.

(KLAR) Vol.18 No.2

This study pays attention to a recent growing trend of participation in volunteer activities among Chinese college students. It seeks to understand what factors can affect volunteer participation. Particularly, it focuses on public service motivation (PSM) and investigates empirically how PSM can influence volunteering. To examine, we conducted a survey questionnaires administered to students registered in three main universities (Chongqing University, Chongqing Normal University, and Chongqing Medical University) in Chongqing, China. Based on the survey data, this study constructed an OLS regression model to estimate the effect of PSM on volunteer participation. After controlling for factors such as demographic factors, social capital, religious activities and socialization processes in the family, the empirical result showed that PSM is partially significant in terms of affecting volunteer participation. A PSM dimension (sacrifice) is statically significant and the other dimensions (sympathy and civic duty) are not significant. In addition, religious activities have a statistically significant effect on volunteering.
