        Identification and Characterization of Host Factors Interacting with Bombyx mori Nucleopolyhedrovirus ORF8

        The orf8 gene (Bm8) in Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) is one of 17 genes unique to group I NPVs and is expressed as an early gene. We have reported that Bm8 may play an important role during viral infection and that Bm8 protein co-localized with IE1 to specific nuclear foci throughout infection. It was also demonstrated that both IE1 and BmNPV hr facilitate this localization of Bm8. To investigate further, host proteins interacting with Bm8 were screened using a yeast two-hybrid system. We identified 6 host clones as Bm8-interacting partners from three cDNA libraries derived from BmN cells or B. mori larvae. Further assays showed that the N-terminal region of Bm8 is important for the interaction with most host clones and that two of the clones can associate with IE1. Cloning and sequencing of full-length cDNAs revealed that most of the clones potentially encode either membrane-bound proteins or secreted proteins. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that some of these host genes were slightly induced during the early stage of infection in BmN cells, and that the expression of all genes was markedly reduced during the late stage of infection. Generation of mutant BmNPVs over-expressing these host genes also identified a gene that potentially functions as a negative factor during BmNPV infection. These features of Bm8-interacting host proteins strongly support that Bm8 is a multifunctional protein involved in multiple signaling pathways in host cells.

      • Reinforcement Learning-Assisted Garbage Collection to Mitigate Long-Tail Latency in SSD

        <P>NAND flash memory is widely used in various systems, ranging from real-time embedded systems to enterprise server systems. Because the flash memory has erase-before-write characteristics, we need flash-memory management methods, i.e., address translation and garbage collection. In particular, garbage collection (GC) incurs long-tail latency, e.g., 100 times higher latency than the average latency at the 99th percentile. Thus, real-time and quality-critical systems fail to meet the given requirements such as deadline and QoS constraints. In this study, we propose a novel method of GC based on reinforcement learning. The objective is to reduce the long-tail latency by exploiting the idle time in the storage system. To improve the efficiency of the reinforcement learning-assisted GC scheme, we present new optimization methods that exploit fine-grained GC to further reduce the long-tail latency. The experimental results with real workloads show that our technique significantly reduces the long-tail latency by 29-36% at the 99.99th percentile compared to state-of-the-art schemes.</P>

      • A case of eczema coxsackium in adult patient after direct contact with hand-foot-mouth disease patient

        A 22-year-old female presented with erythematous macules and papules on her both palms and erythematous scaly papules on whole body that developed 6 days ago. She had been treated with psoriasis vulgaris since about 10 years ago and kept in good condition recently. Before the skin lesion developed, she had history of direct contact with the infant with hand-foot-mouth disease 1 week ago. On histopathologic examination, spongiosis and exocytosis of inflammatory cells were shown in epidermis and lymphocytic infiltration in dermis. Considering early stageof enterovirus infection, real time polymerase chain reaction was performed and coxsackievirus A16 was identified. Eczema coxsackium caused by coxsackievirus A16 was finally diagnosed. Eczema coxsackium is caused by enterovirus and presented with fever, sore throat and generalized cutaneous eruption. It usually occurred in children but rarely reported in adult who had underlying disease such as Darier’s disease, eczema or human immunodeficiency virus infection . Herein, we report a rare case of eczema coxsackium in adult patient after direct contact with hand-foot-mouth disease patient.

      • A case of CD30 positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma occurred in patient of mycosis fungoides

        CD30 positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma is characterized by constant expression of CD30 and anaplastic cytologic feature. It usually experience an indolent disease course and favorable prognosis. Large cell transformation of mycosis fungoides can show similar clinical and histopathologic findings with CD30 positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma. But it shows poor prognosis and needs more aggressive treatment, so differential diagnosis of those two diseases should be required. Differential diagnosis is made by overall consideration of clinical presentation, past history, histopathologic findings and disease course but the distinguishment is still difficult. A 29-year-old Korean male presented with erythematous nodule on his left leg. He was diagnosed as mycosis fungoides 10 years ago and had been treated with phototherapy continuously. On histopathologic examination and immunochemistry of the nodule, more than 75% of CD30 positive large T cell shown in the specimen. With favorable clinical course, CD30 positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma was finally diagnosed. Herein, we report a case of CD30 positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma in patient with mycosis fungoides differentially diagnosed from large-cell transformation of mycosis fungoides.

      • Cyclosporine Amicellar delivery system for dry eyes

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>The objectives of this study were to develop stable cyclosporine A (CsA) ophthalmic micelle solutions for dry-eye syndrome and evaluate their physicochemical properties and therapeutic efficacy.</P><P><B>Materials and methods</B></P><P>CsA-micelle solutions (MS-CsA) were created by a simple method with Cremophor EL, ethanol, and phosphate buffer. We investigated the particle size, pH, and osmolarity. In addition, long-term physical and chemical stability for MS-CsA was observed. To confirm the therapeutic efficacy, tear production in dry eye-induced rabbits was evaluated using the Schirmer tear test (STT). When compared to a commercial product, Restasis, MS-CsA demonstrated improvement in goblet-cell density and conjunctival epithelial morphology, as demonstrated in histological hematoxylin and eosin staining.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>MS-CsA had a smaller particle size (average diameter 14–18 nm) and a narrow size distribution. Physicochemical parameters, such as particle size, pH, osmolarity, and remaining CsA concentration were all within the expected range of 60 days. STT scores significantly improved in MS-CsA treated groups (<I>P</I><0.05) in comparison to those of the Restasis-treated group. The number of goblet cells for rabbit conjunctivas after the administration of MS-CsA was 94.83±8.38, a significantly higher result than the 65.17±11.51 seen with Restasis. The conjunctival epithelial morphology of dry eye-induced rabbits thinned with loss of goblet cells. However, after 5 days of treatment with drug formulations, rabbit conjunctivas recovered epithelia and showed a relative increase in the number of goblet cells.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The results of this study indicate the potential use of a novel MS for the ophthalmic delivery of CsA in treating dry eyes.</P>

      • Cutaneous metastasis of renal angiosarcoma occurred on the face

        A 66-year-old male present with multiple erythematous nodules on his forehead, right cheek and left temple developed one month ago. He had been diagnosed as renal angiosarcoma with liver and bone metastasis and underwent right nephrectomy and adjuvant chemoradiation therapy. On histopathologic examination performed on his left temple, infiltration of basophilic epitheloid cells and irregularly anastomosing vascular structures dissecting collagen bundles and extravasated red blood cells were shown in entire dermis. High-power view showed atypical endothelial cells lining vascular lumen and pleomorphic, heterochromic tumor cells. Immunohistochemical stain of CD34 and factor VIII-related antigen showed positivity. On the basis of clinical and histopathological examinations, metastatic angiosarcoma was finally diagnosed. Angiosarcoma is highy malignant tumor which usually occurs on the skin of the head and neck area and is related with old age, lymphedema, trauma or radiotherapy. It frequently metastasizes from skin to internal organ, but metastasis from internal organ to skin is rarely reported. In Korean dermatologic literature, 2 cases of metastatic cutaneous angiosarcoma, from heart and lung relatively, were reported. Therefore, we report a rare case of metastatic cutaneous angiosarcoma from kidney.

      • A case of multiple nevoid hypertrichosis accompanied with clinodactyly

        Nevoid hypertrichosis is a rare disorder, characterized by localized terminal hairs on normally pigmented skin. It usually presents at birth or soon after with marked female predilection. Etiology of this disease is not yet clarified but mosaicism during embryogenesis was suggested as possible cause of this phenomenon. Accompanied partial lipoatrophy and bony abnormalities has been reported occasionally. It usually presents as solitary lesion, but rarely, multiple patches can develop. We called it multiple nevoid hypertrichosis and need differential diagnosis with other disease such as congenital hypertrichosis lanuginose and congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis. An 18-month-old female child visited our clinic due to black, coarse hairs on her left periocular area, left upper back and left leg. Histopathologic examination demonstrated terminal hair follicles in normal skin. Except clinodactyly of left fifth finger, no other neurologic or bony abnormalities were found. She was diagnosed to multiple nevoid hypertrichosis and following-up regularly without other treatments.

      • Repairing Damaged Hair Using Pentapeptides of Various Amino Acid Sequences with Crosslinking Reaction

        The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of various pentapeptides on hair repair depending on the characteristics of comprising amino acids using crosslinking agents in hair. Total ten peptides were synthesized with two kinds of amino acids respectively, of which were previously categorized according to R group of the amino acids contributing to the characteristic of each peptide: STTSS (Ser-Thr-Thr-Ser-Ser), LIILL (Leu-Ile-Ile-Leu-Leu), CMMCC (Cys-Met-Met-Cys-Cys), DEEDD (Asp-Glu-Glu-Asp-Asp), RKKRR (Arg-Lys-Lys-Arg-Arg), TAMRA-STTSS, TAMRA-LIILL, TAMRA-CMMCC, TAMRA-DEEDD, and TAMRA-RKKRR. Pentapeptide alone, or pentapeptides with crosslinking agents such as polymeric carbodiimide (PCI) and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) were treated to chemically damaged hair. Hair diameter and break strength (N = 40/case) were measured to calculate tensile strength of hair for computing hair repair ratio, and fluorescence yields (N = 20/case) were collected for hair treated with TAMRA-peptides. The tensile strength of hair treated with pentapeptides alone, or pentapeptides with cross-linking agents is consistent with the fluorescence yield from the microscope images of the cross-sectioned hair in vision and in numerical values. Pentapeptides consisting of hydrophobic amino acids (LIILL), amino acids with sulfur (CMMCC), and basic amino acids (RKKRR) increased the tensile strength in perm-damaged hair. Pentapeptides with no extra carboxyl/amine groups in R group of amino acids resulted in no significant differences in hair strength and fluorescence yield among hairs treated with alone and with crosslinkers. Pentapeptides with extra carboxyl groups or amine groups enabled further strengthening of hair due to increased bonds within the hair after carbodiimide coupling reaction. The hair repairs of pentapeptides with various amino acid sequences were studied using crosslinking. Depending on the physical characteristics of comprising amino acids, the restoration of damaged hair was observed with tensile strength of hair and fluorescence signals upon cross-sectioned hair in parallel to possibly understand the binding tendency of each pentapeptide within the hair.

        초등학교 경계선 지능 학생 선별 체크리스트 개발을 위한 타당화 예비 연구

        학습에 어려움을 겪는 초등학생의 여러 가지 원인 중 지능의 문제, 특히 경계선 지능에 대한 사회적·교육적 관심이 높아지고 있으며 이들을 위한 조기 선별과 개입의 중요성이 강조되고 있는 것에 비해, 학교 현장에서 교사들이 경계선 지능 학생을 일차적으로 선별하기 위한 도구는 부족하다는 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 초등학교의 경계선 지능 학생을 선별하는 체크리스트를 개발하고 타당화하기 위한 예비 연구를 목적으로 진행되었다. 경계선 지능 학생 선별 체크리스트 개발을 위하여 선행 연구 및 현장 전문가 의견을 수집, 분석하여 체크리스트의 영역 및 구성요인을 결정하였다. 이에 따라 문항 명세화표를 제작하여 47개의 예비 문항을 개발하였다. 47개의 예비 문항은 1, 2차 내용타당도와 3차 활용 가능성에 대한 전문가의 검토를 거쳐 최종적으로 예비 조사를 위한 29개 문항을 선정하였다. 예비 조사 결과, 체크리스트의 신뢰도는 .934로 나타났으며, 탐색적 요인 분석 결과 인지, 학습, 사회 및 정서의 3개 영역으로 인지 8문항, 학습 9문항, 사회 및 정서 12문항으로 구분되었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 경계선 지능 학생 선별 체크리스트 개발 타당화 예비 연구의 시사점과 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a checklist to identify students with borderline intellectual functioning in elementary school. To develop a borderline intellectual functioning student screening checklist, prior research and expert opinions were collected and analyzed to determine the items and constituent factors for the list. Accordingly, an item specification table was prepared and 47 preliminary items were developed. Among the 47 questions, 29 items were finally selected for the preliminary investigation following consultation with experts, two reviews of the content validity, and after considering the practicality of using the items. Following the preliminary survey, a reliability and validity analysis was conducted, and the reliability of the checklist was found to be .934. An exploratory factor analysis then resulted in the 29 items being categorized into three areas: cognition, learning, and social emotions. Based on the findings of this study, the implications of the preliminary study on developing a validated borderline intellectual functioning student screening checklist and suggestions for subsequent research were discussed.
