Effect of Culture Conditions on the Production of Succinate by Enterococcus faecalis RKY1
Kang, Kui Hyun,Yun, Jong Sun,Ryu, Hwa Won 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2000 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.10 No.1
Bioconversion of fumarate to succinate was anaerobically conducted in a synthetic medium containing glycerol as a hydrogen donor and fumarate as a hydrogen acceptor. We investigated the effects of pH, carbon and nitrogen sources, conversion substrate, and other culture conditions on the production of succinate using a newly isolated Enterococcus faecalis RKY1. Addition of a variety of carbonates to the medium significantly increased the rates of production of succinate. The production of succinate and cell growth were relatively satisfactory in the pH range of 7.0-7.6. By using glycerol as a hydrogen donor, high purity succinate was produced with few byproducts. Yeast extract as a sole nitrogen source was the most effective for producing succinate. As a result, the optimum condition of bioconversion was obtained at a medium containing 20g/l glycerol, 50g/l fumarate, 15g/l yeast extract, 10g/l K_2HPO_4 1g/l NaCl, 50 ppm MgCl_2, .6H_2O, 10ppm FeSO_4, . 7H_2O, and 5g/l Na_2CO_3 at pH 7.0-7.6. Under the optimum condition, a succinate concentration of 153g/l was produced in 36h. The total volumetric production rate and the molar yield of succinate were 4.3g/l/h and 85%, respectively.
Development of New Solitary Retinoblastoma Tumors during and after Chemotherapy
Won Jong Choi,Dong Hyun Jo,Hyoung Jin Kang,Hee Young Shin,Young Suk Yu,Jeong Hun Kim 대한안과학회 2021 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.35 No.1
Purpose: To review the occurrence of new solitary tumors during and after intravenous chemotherapy against retinoblastoma. Methods: From 115 eyes of 78 patients with a diagnosis of intraocular retinoblastoma who underwent intravenous chemotherapyand focal treatment without prior treatment, patient demographics, age at diagnosis, laterality, classification(Reese-Ellsworth and International Classification of Retinoblastoma), and treatment options were recorded. In addition, theoccurrence of small tumors during and after chemotherapy was documented with a detailed review of medical records andfundus photographs. Results: Of a total of 115 eyes of 78 consecutive patients, new solitary tumors were observed in 50 eyes (50 / 115, 43%) of40 patients (40 / 78, 51%). Multinominal logistic regression analyses showed that age at diagnosis (before 1 year) and vitrealseeding at diagnosis were linked to the development of isolated and miliary tumors, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysesdemonstrated that all small tumors developed with 20 months from the start of chemotherapy. Twenty-eight eyes (28 / 34,82%) were salvaged with additional focal treatment in 34 eyes with isolated tumors. Conclusions: Small tumors were observed during and after chemotherapy against retinoblastoma in patients who underwentintravenous chemotherapy and focal treatment. It is necessary to promptly identify and address small tumors for thepreservation of eyeball and vision.
What are the Differences in Outcome among Various Fusion Methods of the Lumbar Spine?
Kang, Suk-Hyung,Kim, Young-Baeg,Park, Seung-Won,Hong, Hyun-Jong,Min, Byung-Kook The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2005 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.37 No.1
Objective: For Posterior lumbar interbody fusion(PLIF) various cages or iliac bone dowels are used with or without pedicle screw fixation(PSF). To evaluate and compare the clinical and radiological results of different fusion methods, we intend to verify the effect of added PSF on PLIF, the effect of bone cages and several factors which are thought to be related with the postoperative prognosis. Methods: One hundred and ninety seven patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and instability or spondylolisthesis underwent various fusion operations from May 1993 to May 2003. The patients were divided into five groups, group A (PLIF with autologous bone dowels, N=24), group B (PLIF with bone cages, N=13), group C (PLIF with bone dowels and PSF, N=37), group D (PLIF with bone cages and PSF, N=30) and group E (PSF with intertransverse bone graft, N=93) for comparison and analyzed for the outcome and fusion rate. Results: Outcome was not significantly different among the five groups. In intervertebral height (IVH) changes between pre- and post-operation, Group B ($2.42{\pm}2.20mm$) was better than Group A ($-1.33{\pm}2.05mm$). But in the Group C, D and E, the IVH changes were not different statistically. Fusion rate of group C, D was higher than that of Group A and B. But the intervertebral height(IVH) increased significantly in group B($2.42{\pm}2.20mm$). Fusion rate of group C and D were higher than that of group A and D. Conclusion: Intervertebral cages are superior to autologous iliac bone dowels for maintaining intervertebral height in PLIF. The additional pedicle screw fixation seems to stabilize the graft and improve fusion rates.
Stress-induced Cardiomyopathy Associated with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Presenting as Hyponatremia
Kang, Dong Goo,Park, Dae Won,Lee, Seung Hyun,Seo, Seok Ho,Lee, Seung Uk,Kim, Jong Taek 이화여자대학교 의과학연구소 2015 EMJ (Ewha medical journal) Vol.38 No.2
Stress-induced cardiomyopathy, so-called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, has recently been reported in Japan. Stress-induced cardiomyopathy is characterized by transient left ventricular apical dysfunction and ballooning, with normal coronary angiographic findings. We describe a rare case of stress-induced cardiomyopathy associated with lung adenocarcinoma presenting as hyponatremia.

Kang, In Pil,Jung, Joo Yung,Choi, Gyeong Rak,Park, Hyung Ki,Lee, Jong Won,Yoon, Kwang Joon,Yun, Yeo Heung,Shanov, Vesselin N.,Schulz, Mark J. Scitec Publications Ltd. 2007 Solid State Phenomena Vol.119 No.-

To address the need for new smart materials, this paper explores the use of carbon nanotubes to develop a nanocomposite smart material having electrochemical impedance properties for sensing and actuation. Fabrication and characterization of the carbon nanocomposite material are discussed in the paper. The issues related to hurdles in the practical manufacturing of commodity level macro size nanocomposite smart materials with prescribed electrical and electrochemical properties are also discussed.
