<P>The antiamnesic effects of ethyl acetate fraction from <I>Actinidia arguta</I> (EFAA) on trimethyltin- (TMT-) induced memory impairment were investigated to find the possibility of functional food substances. EFAA showed a potent AChE inhibitory effect (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 53 <I>μ</I>g/mL) and efficient neuroprotection against H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced oxidative stress. The administration of EFAA significantly decreased TMT-induced cognitive deficit in Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze (MWM) tests. After the behavioral tests, the antioxidant activities were confirmed using mice brain tissues. EFAA not only showed the inhibition of AChE activity and the decline of malondialdehyde (MDA) level as a sign of lipid peroxidation but also presented the increase of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) level and the decrease of the oxidized glutathione (GSSG)/total glutathione (GSH + GSSG) ratio. Finally, the phenolics in EFAA were identified using liquid chromatography coupled with hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometry, and four main phenolics, such as quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeoyl hexose, and quercetin-3-glucoside, were identified. These results suggest that EFAA containing physiological phenolics might enhance drug-induced amnesia through AChE inhibition and neuroprotection.</P>
The Relation between Statistics of Input Photons and Photocounts

The relation between the statistics of photons in input light on a detector and the measured photocounts by the detector is discussed. The averages and variances of the photocounts are compared with the averages and variances of input photons on practical detectors having quantum efficiencies of $\mu$. This comparison was made for three kinds of inputs which include Fock state light, coherent light, and thermal light. The calculations were carried out based on the combined operator model for a detector having less-than-unit quantum efficiency.

<P>Understanding the cellular differentiation of multicellular organisms requires the characterization of genes whose expression is modulated in a cell type-specific manner. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) root hair cell is one model for studying cellular differentiation. In this study, root hair cell-specific genes were screened by a series of in silico and experimental filtration procedures. This process included genome-wide screening for genes with a root hair-specific cis-element in their promoters, filtering root-specific genes from the root hair-specific cis-element-containing genes, further filtering of genes that were suppressed in root hair-defective plant lines, and experimental confirmation by promoter assay. These procedures revealed 19 root hair-specific genes, including many protein kinases and cell wall-related genes, most of which have not been characterized thus far. Functional analyses of these root hair-specific genes with loss-of-function mutants and overexpressing transformants revealed that they play roles in hair growth and morphogenesis. This study demonstrates that a defined cis-element can serve as a filter to screen certain cell type-specific genes and implicates many new root hair-specific genes in root hair development.</P>
Two-Phase Flow Analysis in Multi-Channel

We carried out numerical studies to investigate the single- and two-phase flow characteristics in the single- and multi-channels. We used the finite volume method to solve the mass and momentum conservation equations. The volume of fluid model is used to predict the two-phase flow in the channel. We obtained the distribution of velocity fields, pressure drop and air volume fraction for different water mass flow rates. We also calculated the distribution of mass flow rates in the multi-channels to understand how the flow is distributed in the channels. The calculated results for the single- and two-phase flow are partly compared with the present experimental data both qualitatively and quantitatively, showing relatively good agreement between them. The numerical scheme used in this study predicts well the characteristics of single-and two-phase flow in a multi-channel.
Endoscopic Treatment of Dieulafoy Lesions and Risk Factors for Rebleeding

Background/Aims: Dieulafoy lesions are an important cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of endoscopic treatment for these lesions and to identify the possible predictive factors for rebleeding associated with clinical and endoscopic characteristics. Methods: Records from 44 patients admitted with Dieulafoy bleeding between January 2006 and December 2007 were reviewed. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and endoscopic findings and then correlated the rebleeding risk factors with Dieulafoy lesions. Results: Primary hemostasis was achieved by endoscopic treatment in 39 patients (88.6%). There were no significant differences between the rebleeding and non-rebleeding groups with respect to age, gender, initial hemoglobin levels, presence of shock, concurrent disease, location of bleeding, or initial hemostatic treatment methods. However, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or anticoagulants (p=0.02) and active stages in the Forrest classification (p<0.01) were risk factors for rebleeding after endoscopic therapy. Conclusions: Endoscopic therapy is effective and safe for treating Dieulafoy lesions, and it has both short-and long-term benefits. Early identification of risk factors such as the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or anticoagulants and the Forrest classification of bleeding predict the outcome of Dieulafoy lesions. Chemical interface damping (CID) is the most recently suggested plasmon damping pathway induced by adsorbate molecules in gold nanoparticles. Despite recent advances in this field, CID has not been studied in gold nanorods coated with mesoporous silica shells (AuNRs@mSiO2). Herein, we conducted a single-particle correlation study to elucidate CID using pnitrothiophenol (p-NTP) as adsorbates in single AuNRs@mSiO2. Through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy studies, we confirmed that p-NTP with a strong electron-withdrawing group was effectively adsorbed on the AuNR cores. Following the chemisorption of p-NTP, a strong CID was observed with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) linewidth broadening through the preferred interaction between sulfur and the Au surfaces. Furthermore, we presented the molecular binding effect on the LSPR linewidth of single AuNRs@mSiO2 during the reaction with p-NTP in real-time. Thus, the result further supported that the CID could be used to develop LSPR sensors having low sensitivity to the medium dielectric constant.

Pulmonary hamartoma is the most common benign tumor of lung. However, the cases of pulmonary hamartoma containing mesenchymal tissue are rare. Here, we report a case of pulmonary hamartoma having the feature of angiomyolipoma. A 62-year-old woman presented with dry cough and dyspnea. Chest CT was performed and 0.5 cm sized nodule having cavity was detected. Empirical antibiotics were prescribed for 2 weeks and chest CT was reevaluated. However, the nodule remained stationary and eventually video assisted thoracoscopic biopsy was done. In pathologic specimen, well differentiated fat, muscle, and vascular tissues were observed. However, HMB-45, that is known as specific marker of angiomyolipoma, was not stained. Thus, the patient was diagnosed as pulmonary hamartoma having the feature of angiomyolipoma.

목적 : 본 연구에서는 인구사회학적 요인을 통제하여 안전벨트 착용에 따른 음주운전 경험 여부의 관계를 파악하고, 연구대상자의 인구사회학적 특성에 따른 음주운전 경험 여부의 영향요인을 확인하고자 하였다. 방법 : 제7기 국민건강영양조사 3차 년도 자료를 활용하여, 만 19세 이상인 설문응답자 중 음주운전과 안전벨트 관련 문항에 응답한 3,312명을 최종 분석 대상으로 선정하였다. 결과 : 평상시 안전벨트 착용 여부와 최근 1년 내 음주운전 여부는 통계적으로 유의한 관련성을 보였으며, 평상시에 안전벨트를 항상 착용하는 사람에 비해 그렇지 않은 사람의 음주운전 경험률이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 자동차 음주운전의 영향요인은 성별, 결혼상태, 교육수준, 경제활동 상태, 거주지역으로 나타났다. 결론 : 안전벨트의 착용이 자동차 음주운전과 유의한 관계를 지녔음을 알 수 있으며, 본 연구 결과가 차량 운전자의 안전의식 향상 및 교통안전 정책 수립의 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대한다. Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between the experience of drunk driving and seatbelt usage controlling socio-demographic factors. Methods : A cross-sectional analysis was performed with 3,312 participants among those who answered the data of the third year of the 7th National Health Nutrition Survey. Results : It was identified participants with lower seatbelt usage were more likely to have a drunk driving experience compared to those higher seatbelt usage. Conclusion : We revealed that seatbelt usage has a significant relationship with drunk driving. These results are expected to be utilized for improving safety consciousness of drivers and establishing traffic safety policies.

We report magnetic nanomaterials for magnetic hyperthermia therapy. We successfully synthesis gamma phase iron oxide nanoplates (gIONPLs) using thermal decomposition method and ‘O2 adding’ to helped oxidation of nanomaterials. Normally, synthesis method of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) is 2 temperature steps for reaction and we followed same temperature steps. One of added method ‘O2 adding’ help oxidation of IONPs to formed gamma phase. AMF generator induced mild frequency and magnetic field (100 kHz and 140 Oe) for harmless to human body generally used range of hyperthermia therapy. Gamma phase IONPLs are usually formed spinel structure. Alkali and alkali earth metals can doped on spinel structure. Magnesium is one of the alkali earth metal that can doped on gIONPs. We used U87MG, FsaII and HFB cells to in vitro, hyperthermia test and observed greatly therapeutic effects. Our gIONPLs and Mg-gIONPLs have potential therapeutic effects on cancer in human body by high temperature magnetic hyperthermia therapy.
