Strategic Application and Adoption of Information Systems

Korea has shown a tremendous leap in economic development in a short span of time, and the world is watching Korea’s economy with keen interest. Development of industries that are implementing information systems (IS) has played a role in leading economic growth in Korea. Because of the success of Korean firms, the creation of case studies for implementing IS in Korean firms was attempted. Despite the many case studies, analysis of the motivations and results, for implementing IS as a firm’s strategic purpose, was rarely conducted. Therefore, this paper investigates some Korean firms’ cases studies in order to show the best practice example of implementing and adopting IS strategically. Nine cases of Korean firms’ strategic use of IS were analyzed in various industry fields. Each case consists of the following four categories: company overview, background implementing IS, adoption of IS for strategic purpose, and the results of implementing IS. In order to help various companies to take an action with their IS implementation and its strategic use, implications from the cases are summarized to show how Korean firms strategically introduced IS for solving particular problems that they had faced.
Preamplifier Design with Wide Bandwidth using InGaP/GaAs HBT for 10 Gbps Photoreceiver Module

We report a preamplier with wide bandwidth using high-speed and reliable InGaP/GaAs HBT applicable for 10-Gbps photoreceiver modules. The three-stage preamplier with a negative feedback resistor demonstrates an eective transimpedance gain of 43 dB , a {3-dB bandwidth of 14 GHz corresponding to a very high transimpedance-bandwidth product of 2.52 THz , and an output return loss of {18 dB up to {3-dB bandwidth. This compact circuit is fabricated with an area of 800 700 m2. A photoreceiver module of surface-mountable package type, that is composed of preamplier and photodiode of surface-illumination type, demonstrates an optical bandwidth of 7.5 GHz at = 1.55 m and a 45-psec rise/fall time for 10-Gbps. The module shows higher sensitivity for a 10-Gbps optical transmission system.

Background/Aims: The relationship between portal he-modynamics and fundal varices has not been well docu-mented. The purpose of this study was to understand the pathophysiology of fundal varices and to investigate bleeding risk factors related to the presence of spontaneous portosys-temic shunts, and to examine the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) between fundal varices and other varices. Methods: In total, 85 patients with cirrhosis who underwent HVPG and gastroscopic examination between July 2009 and March 2011 were included in this study. The interrelation-ship between HVPG and the types of varices or the presence of spontaneous portosystemic shunts was studied. Results: There was no significant difference in the HVPG between fundal varices (n=12) and esophageal varices and gastro-esophageal varices type 1 (GOV1) groups (n=73) (17.1±7.7 mm Hg vs 19.7±5.3 mm Hg). Additionally, there was no sig-nificant difference in the HVPG between varices with spon-taneous portosystemic shunts (n=28) and varices without these shunts (n=57) (18.3±5.8 mm Hg vs 17.0±8.1 mm Hg). Spontaneous portosystemic shunts increased in fundal vari-ces compared with esophageal varices and GOV1 (8/12 pa-tients [66.7%] vs 20/73 patients [27.4%]; p=0.016). Conclu-sions: Fundal varices had a high prevalence of spontaneous portosystemic shunts compared with other varices. However, the portal pressure in fundal varices was not different from the pressure in esophageal varices and GOV1. (Gut Liver 2013;7:704-711)
Ruptured Aneurysm of Recurrent Artery of Heubner: A Case Report

Recurrent artery of Heubner (RAH) aneurysms are extremely rare and few cases have been reported in the literature. A 53-year-old woman was transferred for evaluation and management of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Cerebral angiography revealed a rupture of RAH aneurysm. The aneurysm was secured with a fenestrated right-angled Yasargil clip along the RAH. Postoperative brain computed tomography showed a hypodense lesion at the left head of the caudate nucleus due to obliteration of the RAH. Fortunately, the patient experienced no neurologic deficits. To avoid iatrogenic obliteration of RAH, intraoperative careful confirmation of its flow should be performed. We report a case of RAH aneurysm in a patient with SAH.
Embedded Real-Time Software Architecture for Unmanned Autonomous Helicopters

The UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems like unmanned autonomous helicopters are used in various missions of flight navigation and used to collect the environmental information of the surroundings. To realize the full functionalities of the UAV, the software part becomes a challenging problem. In this paper embedded real-time software architecture for unmanned autonomous helicopter is proposed that guarantee real-time performance of hard-real time tasks and re-configurability of soft-real time and non-real time tasks. The proposed software architecture has four layers: hardware, execution, service agent and remote user interface layer according to the reactiveness level for external events. In addition, the layered separation of concurrent tasks makes different kinds of mission reconfiguration possible in the system. An Unmanned autonomous helicopter system was implemented (Kyosho RC Helicopter) in our lab to test and evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

A case of Lemierre syndrome caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae in patient with diabetes mellitus

Lemierre`s syndrome is an uncommon complication of acute pharyngitis in adolescents and young adults characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and metastatic lesions (septic emboli) of distant site. The organisms most frequently involved are anaerobic streptococci, Bacteroides species and Fusobacterium necrophorum. The prompt diagnosis and early treatment, sometimes including surgical intervention, are crucial because delayed treatment may be associated with high mortality rate. A 40-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with 6-day history of pain and swelling of neck which started one day after the dental procedure. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed soft tissue necrosis in mandibular area and focal thrombosis in the left internal jugular vein (Fig. 1A). Chest X-ray revealed multiple patchy pulmonary infiltration which suggests metastatic infection of lung (Fig. 1B). Cultures of the lesion and specimens of blood grew Klebsiella pneumoniae and were negative for anaerobic bacteria. He was treated with piperacillin/tazobactam and undergone surgical exploration and debridement of necrotic tissue. However, he expired on 6 days after admission. We report a fetal case of Lemierre`s syndrome by Klebsiella pneumoniae.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The aim of this work was to develop a new approach for simple and high-throughput selection of astaxanthin-hyperproducing <I>Haematococcus</I> mutants through a sequential combination method of azide-based colorimetric assessment and oil-based astaxanthin quantification. Randomly mutagenized cells were spotted on solid culture medium containing 50 µM of sodium azide to accelerate the biosynthesis of astaxanthin. After 3 days, highly-induced mutants were preliminarily isolated by visual inspection and their astaxanthin accumulations were rapidly quantified by soybean oil-based extraction method. On the whole, the selected mutants showed reduced vegetative growth rates but eventually exhibited higher astaxanthin productions than the parental strain owing to their improved inductive growths. Among them, M13 showed 174.7 ± 5.69 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP> of the highest astaxanthin production, which is 1.59-times higher than that of wild-type. This wide-scope screening method expedites both upstream and downstream astaxanthin quantification, making it a useful tool for isolating microalgae with high astaxanthin production.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> NaN<SUB>3</SUB> was used for colorimetric selection of highly inducible <I>H. pluvialis</I> mutants. </LI> <LI> Soybean oil was used for rapid extraction and analysis of astaxanthin in the cells. </LI> <LI> 88.5% of the selected mutants showed improved astaxanthin productions. </LI> <LI> A selected mutant, M13, produced 174.7 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP> of astaxanthin in a 5 L PBR. </LI> <LI> Astaxanthin titer of the mutant increased 59% compared to that of the wild type. </LI> </UL> </P>
