      • Is Hepatectomy for Huge Hepatocellular Carcinoma (≥10cm in Diameter) Safe and Effective? A Single-center Experience

        Yang, Jian,Li, Chuan,Wen, Tian-Fu,Yan, Lu-Nan,Li, Bo,Wang, Wen-Tao,Yang, Jia-Yin,Xu, Ming-Qing Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17

Background: This retrospective study aimed to validate the safety and effectiveness of hepatectomy for huge hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: Data of patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC between January 2006 and December 2012 were reviewed. The patients were divided into three groups: huge HCC(${\geq}10cm$ in diameter), large HCC(${\geq}5$ but<10 cm in diameter) and small HCC(<5cm in diameter). Results: Characteristics of pre-operative patients in all three groups were homogeneously distributed except for alpha fetal protein (AFP)(p<0.001).The 30, 60, 90-day post-operative mortality rates were not different among the three groups (p=0.785, p=0.560, and p=0.549). Laboratory data at 1, 3, and 7 days after surgery also did not vary. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates in the huge and large HCC groups were lower than that of the small HCC group (OS: 32.5% vs 36.3% vs 71.2%, p=0.000; DFS: 20.0% vs 24.8% vs 40.7%, p=0.039), but there was no difference between the huge and large HCC groups (OS: 32.5% vs 36.3%, p=0.667; DFS: 20.0% vs 24.8%, p=0.540). In multivariate analysis, five independent poor prognostic factors that affected OS were significantly associated with worse survival (p<0.05), namely, AFP level, macrovascular invasion, Edmondsone Steiner grade, surgical margin and Ishak score. AFP level, macrovascular invasion, microvascular invasion, and surgical margin influenced disease-free survival independently (p<0.05). Conclusions: The safety of hepatectomy for huge HCC is similar to that for large and small HCC; and this approach for huge HCC may achieve similar long-term survival and disease-free survival as for large HCC.

Mitochondrial citrate accumulation drives alveolar epithelial cell necroptosis in lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury

        Yang Hui-Hui,Jiang Hui-Ling,Tao Jia-Hao,Zhang Chen-Yu,Xiong Jian-Bing,Yang Jin-Tong,Liu Yu-Biao,Zhong Wen-Jing,Guan Xin-Xin,Duan Jia-Xi,Zhang Yan-Feng,Liu Shao-Kun,Jiang Jian-Xin,Zhou Yong,Guan Cha-Xi 생화학분자생물학회 2022 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.54 No.-

Necroptosis is the major cause of death in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) during acute lung injury (ALI). Here, we report a previously unrecognized mechanism for necroptosis. We found an accumulation of mitochondrial citrate (citratemt) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated AECs because of the downregulation of Idh3α and citrate carrier (CIC, also known as Slc25a1). shRNA- or inhibitor–mediated inhibition of Idh3α and Slc25a1 induced citratemt accumulation and necroptosis in vitro. Mice with AEC-specific Idh3α and Slc25a1 deficiency exhibited exacerbated lung injury and AEC necroptosis. Interestingly, the overexpression of Idh3α and Slc25a1 decreased citratemt levels and rescued AECs from necroptosis. Mechanistically, citratemt accumulation induced mitochondrial fission and excessive mitophagy in AECs. Furthermore, citratemt directly interacted with FUN14 domain-containing protein 1 (FUNDC1) and promoted the interaction of FUNDC1 with dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), leading to excessive mitophagy-mediated necroptosis and thereby initiating and promoting ALI. Importantly, necroptosis induced by citratemt accumulation was inhibited in FUNDC1-knockout AECs. We show that citratemt accumulation is a novel target for protection against ALI involving necroptosis.

A reliability analysis method for rock slope controlled by weak structural surface

        Jia-wen Zhou,Ming-yuan Jiao,Hui-ge Xing,Xing-guo Yang,Yu-chuan Yang 한국지질과학협의회 2017 Geosciences Journal Vol.21 No.3

Catastrophic landslides maybe occur in rock slope due to the effect of strong earthquakes or heavy rainfall. The stability of rock slope is usually controlled by different scales of weak structural surfaces, which are uncertain and randomly exist in the rock slope. According to the geological characteristics of rock slope, two typical failure modes – plane and wedge are possible. A second-order second-moment (SOSM) method is presented to calculate the reliability index and the failure probability of rock slope, which is an improvement over the first-order second-moment (FOSM) method, and performance functions are built up with the classic limit equilibrium method. The presented method is applied to analyze the failure probability of two rock slopes at the Jinping I Hydropower Station and is compared with the Monte Carlo method and the FOSM method. The computed results show that for plane failure, the reliability index and the failure probability determined by the presented method are 0.563 and 28.7%, respectively, and the reliability index and the failure probability determined by Monte Carlo method are 0.677 and 24.9%, respectively. However, for the FOSM method, the reliability index and failure probability are –0.025 and 51.0%, respectively. For both plane failure and wedge failure, the difference between the presented method and the Monte Carlo method is very small, but the failure probability of plane failure determined by FOSM method is larger than that of the other two methods. The presented method can provide a useful tool to evaluate the failure probability of rock slope.

3-Hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase is required for ovarian development in the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)

        Wen-Jia Yang,Kang-Kang Xu,Wei Dou,Can Li,JinjunWang 한국응용곤충학회 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.21 No.3

3-Hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) is an important rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway, which is critical for the synthesis of juvenile hormone and insect development. In this study, a full-length cDNA encoding HMGR (BdHMGR) was cloned from the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel). The open reading frame of BdHMGR encoded 928 amino acids and shared a high degree of identity with other known HMGRs. The expression levels of BdHMGR were high during the early and lately pupal stages, and were low at the larval and mid pupal stages. In the adult stages, the highest level of BdHMGR was detected on day-10 of the adult lifecycle, and the expression levels in females were greater than those in males. The highest tissuespecific expression was in the ovary, followed by fat body and other tissues. Injection of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) of BdHMGR into adult females significantly reduced BdHMGR transcript levels, and inhibited ovarian development and affected the expression of two yolk protein genes. After dissection, we found that one or two of the spheroids of ovaries from the BdHMGR dsRNA-injected flies were amorphous and reduced in size as compared with the controls. The results suggest that BdHMGR is required for ovarian development in B. dorsalis and may be a potential target for pest control.

      • U.S. INTEREST RATES AND PORTFOLIO INVESTMENTS IN LATIN AMERICA

Jia wen Yang People&Global Business Association 1997 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.2 No.1

This paper analyzes the relationship between U.S. interest rates and portfolio investments in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The paper finds that U.S. interest rate fluctuations have a significant negative impact on capital flows to these countries, including direct investment and other capital as well as portfolio capital flows. Differences do exist across countries and they relate to country-specific macroeconomics policies and financial reforms. The findings of this study have important implications for international monetary and financial issues and macroeconomic policies in emerging markets.

      • Risk Factors for Early Recurrence of HBV-related Hepatocellular Carcinoma Meeting Milan Criteria after Curative Resection

        Zhu, Wen-Jiang,Huang, Chu-Ying,Li, Chuan,Peng, Wei,Wen, Tian-Fu,Yan, Lv-Nan,Li, Bo,Wang, Wen-Tao,Xu, Ming-Qing,Yang, Jia-Yin,Jiang, Li Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Background: The prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection varies greatly. Few studies had investigated the risk factors for early recurrence (recurrence-free time ${\leq}$ 1 year) of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCCs meeting Milan criteria. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the 224 patients with HCC meeting Milan criteria who underwent curative liver resection in our center between February 2007 and March 2012. The overall survival (OS) rate, recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate and risk factors for early recurrence were analyzed. Results: After a median follow-up of 33.3 months, HCC reoccurred in 105 of 224 patients and 32 died during the period. The 1-, 3- and 5-year OS rates were 97.3%, 81.6% and 75.6% respectively, and the 1-, 3- and 5-year RFS rates were 73.2%, 53.7% and 41.6%. Cox regression showed alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) > 800 ng/ml (HR 2.538, 95% CI 1.464-4.401, P=0.001), multiple tumors (HR 2.286, 95% CI 1.123-4.246, P=0.009) and microvascular invasion (HR 2.518, 95% CI 1.475-4.298, P=0.001) to be associated with early recurrence (recurrence-free time ${\leq}$ 1-year) of HCC meeting Milan criteria. Conclusions: AFP > 800 ng/ml, multiple tumors and microvascular invasion are independent risk factors affecting early postoperative recurrence of HCC. In addition resection appears capable of replacing liver transplantation in some situations with safety and a better outcome.

      • Coevolution between Human's Anticancer Activities and Functional Foods from Crop Origin Center in the World

        Zeng, Ya-Wen,Du, Juan,Pu, Xiao-Ying,Yang, Jia-Zhen,Yang, Tao,Yang, Shu-Ming,Yang, Xiao-Meng Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.6

Cancer is the leading cause of death around the world. Anticancer activities from many functional food sources have been reported in years, but correlation between cancer prevalence and types of food with anticancer activities from crop origin center in the world as well as food source with human migration are unclear. Hunger from food shortage is the cause of early human evolution from Africa to Asia and later into Eurasia. The richest functional foods are found in crop origin centers, housing about 70% in the world populations. Crop origin centers have lower cancer incidence and mortality in the world, especially Central Asia, Middle East, Southwest China, India and Ethiopia. Asia and Africa with the richest anticancer crops is not only the most important evolution base of humans and origin center of anticancer functional crop, but also is the lowest mortality and incidence of cancers in the world. Cancer prevention of early human migrations was associated with functional foods from crop origin centers, especially Asia with four centers and one subcenter of crop origin, accounting for 58% of the world population. These results reveal that coevolution between human's anticancer activities associated with functional foods for crop origin centers, especially in Asia and Africa.

      • Strategies of Functional Food for Cancer Prevention in Human Beings

        Zeng, Ya-Wen,Yang, Jia-Zheng,Pu, Xiao-Ying,Du, Juan,Yang, Tao,Yang, Shu-Ming,Zhu, Wei-Hua Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.3

Functional food for prevention of chronic diseases is one of this century's key global challenges. Cancer is not only the first or second leading cause of death in China and other countries across the world, but also has diet as one of the most important modifiable risk factors. Major dietary factors now known to promote cancer development are polished grain foods and low intake of fresh vegetables, with general importance for an unhealthy lifestyle and obesity. The strategies of cancer prevention in human being are increased consumption of functional foods like whole grains (brown rice, barley, and buckwheat) and by-products, as well some vegetables (bitter melon, garlic, onions, broccoli, and cabbage) and mushrooms (boletes and Tricholoma matsutake). In addition some beverages (green tea and coffee) may be protective. Southwest China (especially Yunnan Province) is a geographical area where functional crop production is closely related to the origins of human evolution with implications for anticancer influence.

Modeling net energy requirements of 2 to 3-week-old Cherry Valley ducks

        Yang Ting,Yu Lexiao,Wen Min,Zhao Hua,Chen Xiaoling,Liu Guangmang,Tian Gang,Cai Jingyi,Jia Gang 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.10

Objective: A total of three hundred unsexed ducks were utilized to estimate net energy requirements of maintenance (NEm) and weight gain (NEg) for 2 to 3-week-old Cherry Valley ducks and to establish a model equation to predict NE requirements using the factorial method. Methods: To determine the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) of the diet, fifty 7-day-old ducks at approximately equal body weights (BWs) were randomly assigned into five groups that were fed at different levels (ad libitum, 85%, 75%, 65%, and 55% of ad libitum intake), and the endogenous acid-insoluble ash as indigestible marker. The two hundred and fifty 7-day-old ducks were used for a comparative slaughter experiment. At the beginning of the experiment, ten ducks were sacrificed to determine the initial body composition and energy content. The remaining ducks were randomly assigned into five groups (same as metabolic experiment). Ducks of the ad libitum group were slaughtered at 14 and 21-day-old. At the end of the experiment, two ducks were selected from each replicate and slaughtered to determine the body composition and energy content. Results: The results of the metabolizable experiment showed AME values of 13.43 to 13.77 MJ/kg for ducks at different feed intakes. The results of the comparative slaughter experiment showed the NEm value for 2 to 3-week-old Cherry Valley ducks was 549.54 kJ/kg of BW0.75/d, and the NEg value was 10.41 kJ/g. The deposition efficiency values of fat (Kf) and crude protein (Kp) were 0.96 and 0.60, respectively, and the values of efficiency of energy utilization (Kg) and maintenance efficiency (Km) were 0.75 and 0.88, respectively. Conclusion: The equation for the prediction of NE requirements for 2 to 3-week-old Cherry Valley ducks was the following: NE = 549.54 BW0.75+10.41 ΔW, where ΔW is the weight gain (g).

Photodynamic antibacterial micro/nanofiber composite membrane with high efficiency and low resistance filtration performance for medical protective materials

        Jia-Horng Lin,Lu Yang,Xianjin Hu,Haokai Peng,Haitao Ren,Ting-Ting Li,Ching-Wen Lou 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.128 No.-

Bacterial infection is one of the major threats to human health worldwide, posing a great challenge to thedevelopment of medical protective materials with efficient filtration and long-lasting antimicrobial properties. In this study, electrospinning technology and non-woven fabrics were combined to construct amicro/nano-structured photodynamic rechargeable and storable antibacterial filtration composite membrane. The filtration efficiency of the composite membrane is as high as 99.99% for 0.5–5 lm particles, and the resistance pressure drop is 85 Pa. In addition, the release of OH and H2O2 from the compositefilm reached 5326.16 lg/g and 711.93 lg/g, respectively. After 7 cycles of quenching, the charging capacityretains more than 70 % of the original. It showed good antimicrobial properties even when storedunder dark conditions for one month. The bactericidal efficiency of the composite membrane againstE. coli and S. aureus exceeded 99% under both dark and light conditions. The development of this simpleand clean micro/nanofiber membrane provides a new idea for exploring photoactive antimicrobial andfiltration materials for medical protection.
