Ecklonia stolonifera, a brown alga, has been reported to have several biological activities, including antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and hepatoprotection. This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of E. stolonifera (ESA) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. ESA inhibited the production of LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E-2 and reduced the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in a dose-dependent manner. ESA also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 beta, and IL-6. LPS-induced transcriptional activation of nuclear factor-kappa B was significantly suppressed by ESA through the prevention of inhibitor kappa B-alpha degradation. Eight phlorotannins, including 2-phloroeckol, dioxinodehydroeckol, eckol, phlorofucofuroeckol B, 6,6'-bieckol, dieckol, 974-B, and phlorofucofuroeckol A were isolated from ESA, and their chemical structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopic analysis. Based on the inhibition of NO production in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells, the major anti-inflammatory components in ESA were identified as 2'-phloroeckol, 6,6'-bieckol, phlorofucofuroeckol A, phlorofucofuroeckol B, and 974-B. Our results indicate that E. stolonifera may be considered as a therapeutic agent for the prevention of inflammatory disorders.

Abstract

Background

The aim of the study is examine the impact of non-obstructive (<50%stenosis) left main (LM) disease on the natural history of coronary artery disease using serial coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA).

Methods

CTAs from the PARADIGM (Progression of atherosclerotic plaque determined by computed tomographic angiography imaging) study, a prospective multinational registry of patients who underwent serial CTA at a ≥2 year interval were analyzed. Coronary artery vessels and their branches underwent quantification of: plaque volume and composition; diameter stenosis; presence of high-risk plaque.

Results

Of 944 (62 ± 9 years, 60% male) who had evidence of CAD at baseline, 444 (47%) had LM disease. Those with LM disease had a higher baseline plaque volume (194.8 ± 221mm3 versus 72.9 ± 84.3mm3, p < 0.001) and a higher prevalence of high-risk plaque (17.5% versus 13%, p < 0.001) than those without LM disease. On multivariable general linear model, patients with LM disease had greater annual rates of progression of total (26.5 ± 31.4mm3/yr versus 14.9 ± 20.1mm3/yr, p < 0.001) and calcified plaque volume (17 ± 24mm3/yr versus 7 ± 11mm3/yr, p < 0.001), with no difference in fibrous, fibrofatty or necrotic core plaque components.

Conclusion

The presence of non-obstructive LM disease is associated with greater rates of plaque progression and a higher prevalence of high-risk plaque throughout the entire coronary artery tree compared to CAD without LM involvement. Our data suggests that non-obstructive LM disease may be a marker for an aggressive phenotype of CAD that may benefit from more intensive treatment strategies.

Women's Public and Private Tensions : Handicraft NGOs and Women's Development in Thailand
WEIR, Kimberly A. 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2008 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.14 No.4
In an effort to help rural women of all ages in Thailand, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) producing handicrafts focus on traditional Thai handicrafts as a means to improve women's quality of life. Like many NGOs, these organizations rely on skills women already have to create products that can be sold in the marketplace. Handicraft NGOs face a dual challenge. On the one hand, they seek to improve women's standard of living, or practical gender needs. On the other hand, they also address the more abstract issues, or strategic gender needs that inhibit women's overall development. Can an economic activity that is so gendered promote overall development? Moreover, what effect does industrialization have on rural women's potential development? This paper seeks to examine the impact of the NGOs' pursuit of development and the greater implications that their intervention has on women's development with respect to the dynamics of the public and private spheres in rural?and, by extension, urban?Thailand.

The theory of low-velocity impact between nano-sized, spherical particles requires consideration of surface energy, which causesapproach speeds to increase on rst contact, and recoil speeds to reduce, just before geometrical separation. A conceptual model is devel-oped in which six major regimes are identied: the pancake and/or thin-lm regime results from extreme particle accelerations and par-ticle attening from surface energy; the disintegration and/or torus regime results from high kinetic energy causing the particle todisintegrate or to pass through itself (torus); the approach regime results when the particle ceases its approach without extreme geomet-regime occurs when the particle is trapped by the surface, about which it continues oscillating; and the stick regime where the recoil stepdoes not proceed, and the particle remains at the position at the end of the approach regime. The approach regime is described by onenon-dimensional parameter, and the recoil regime by another non-dimensional parameter. An upper bound for the duration of theapproach regime is obtained which is independent of surface energy and initial approach speed. The recoil regime results in particleescape (capture) when the elastic energy exceeds (is less than or equal to) the surface energy at the beginning of recoil. Stick occurs whenthe surface energy at the beginning of recoil equals or exceeds twice the corresponding elastic energy.
Towards KBEs : Preconditions and Assessments
MCKEON, ROB,WEIR, TONY 이화여자대학교 국제통상협력연구소 2000 Jounal of APEC Studies Vol.2 No.1
This paper is a summary of Part 1 of the draft APEC report Towards KBEs in APEC. The paper has two main aims: · For a range of APEC economies, to examine a set of characteristics and indicators which relate to their development towards knowledge-based economies (KBEs): and · To identify which of these characteristics are in fact preconditions, as distinct from consequences, of a KBE. A range of KBE characteristics (covering Business Environment, Innovation Systems, Human Resource Development, and Information and Communications Technology Infrastructure) are examined for each of the case study economies and for an idealized KBE. Comparisons with the idealized economy highlight the preconditions required in order for economies at different levels of development to progress towards a fully-fledged KBE. The sample set of APEC economies used for comparative purposes covers: the Most Developed Economies (with Australia and Canada as case studies), High Performing Asian Economies (with Singapore and Korea as case studies), Asian Fast-Crowing Economies (with the Philippines and Thailand as case studies), and Latin American Economies (with Chile as case study).

Background: The aims were to assess whether sex had a clinically significant independent influence on the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) according to the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, Short Form (SF-) 12 scores and patient satisfaction at 1 year. Methods: A retrospective cohort of 3510 primary TKA were identified. Patient demographics, comorbidities, WOMAC and SF-12 scores were collected preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. Patient satisfaction were assessed at 1 year. Results: There were 1584 males and 1926 females. The preoperative WOMAC and SF-12 scores were significantly (p < 0.001) worse in females but were not greater than the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). When adjustments had been made for confounding differences, females showed a significantly greater improvement in their function (1.5 points, p = 0.03) and total (1.5 points, p = 0.03) WOMAC scores compared to males, but these were not greater than the MCID. When adjustments had been made for confounding differences, females were less likely to be satisfied with their pain relief (p = 0.03) relative to males. Conclusion: Sex does not clinically influence the knee specific outcome (WOMAC) or overall generic (SF-12) health 1 year after TKA. However, satisfaction with pain relief after TKA was significantly less likely in female patients.
