Korean Text to Gloss: Self-Supervised Learning approach

Natural Language Processing (NLP) has grown tremendously in recent years. Typically, bilingual, and multilingual translation models have been deployed widely in machine translation and gained vast attention from the research community. On the contrary, few studies have focused on translating between spoken and sign languages, especially non-English languages. Prior works on Sign Language Translation (SLT) have shown that a mid-level sign gloss representation enhances translation performance. Therefore, this study presents a new large-scale Korean sign language dataset, the Museum-Commentary Korean Sign Gloss (MCKSG) dataset, including 3828 pairs of Korean sentences and their corresponding sign glosses used in Museum-Commentary contexts. In addition, we propose a translation framework based on self-supervised learning, where the pretext task is a text-to-text from a Korean sentence to its back-translation versions, then the pre-trained network will be fine-tuned on the MCKSG dataset. Using self-supervised learning help to overcome the drawback of a shortage of sign language data. Through experimental results, our proposed model outperforms a baseline BERT model by 6.22%.
Predicting Financial Distress Distribution of Companies

Purpose: Predicting the financial distress distribution of an enterprise is important to warn enterprises about their future. Predicting the possibility of financial distress helps companies have action plans to avoid the possibility of bankruptcy. In this study, the author conducted a forecast of the financial distress distribution of enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: The forecasting method is based on Logit and Discriminant analysis models. The data was collected from companies listed on Vietnam Stock Exchange from 2012 to 2020. In which there are both companies suffer from financial distress and non-financial distress. Results: The forecast analysis results show that the Logistic model has better predictability than the Discriminant analysis model. At the same time, the results also indicate three main factors affecting the financial distress of enterprises at all three research stages: (1) Liquidity, (2) Interest payment, and (3) firm size. In addition, at each stage, the impact of factors on financial distress differs. Conclusions: From the results of this study, the author also made several recommendations to help companies better control company operations to avoid falling into financial distress. Adjustments to current assets, debt, and company expansion considerations are the most important factors for companies.

The level set based approach is one of active methods for contour extraction in image segmentation. Since Osher and Sethian introduced the level set framework in 1988, the method has made the great impact on image segmentation. However, there are some problems to be solved; such as multi-objects segmentation, noise filtering and much calculation amount. In this paper we address the drawbacks of the previous level set methods and propose an extension of the traditional fast level set to cope with the limitations. We introduce a relationship matrix, a new split-and-merge criterion, a modified Chan-Vese criterion and a novel filtering criterion into the traditional fast level set approach. With the segmentation experiments we evaluate the proposed method and show the promising results of the proposed method.
Diversity of wild soybean seed coat structure and its relationship with water imbibition

Two hundred wild soybean lines were used to investigate water imbibition of seeds and its relationships with seed coat structure. Those structures were observed under the light microscope and the surface structure and cell arrangement was done under the scanning electron microscope. One hundred and ninety seven out of 200 wild soybean genotypes (98.5%) had hard seed and only three wild soybean genotypes, YWS16, YWS67, and YWS136 collected in Korea showed the permeability to water. Those three permeable lines showed less endocarp deposits whereas the hard seed lines did thick deposits. Larger cracks were found in permeable seed lines, however, no crack or tightly cracks were found in hard seed lines. The structure in the cell arrangement of palisade layer was looser than hard seed lines. The less compact cell arrangement in palisade cell layer and lower endocarp deposits with large cracks were considered as main factors affecting the permeability of wild soybean seeds.
Split-and-Merge Fast Level Set Methods and their application to medical image segmentation

The boundary evolution based Level Set Method has been widely used in medical image segmentation. In this paper, we have developed a new algorithm that extends the Fast Level Set Method. The main contributions of this work are to formulate a new level set function, define relationships between layers and use an alternative elimination criterion in interface evolution. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach, compared to the classical Level Set Method and the original Fast Level Set Method.

Genetic diversity plays a great role in the survival and adaptability of a species under changable environment. Korea is known as original region of cultivated soybean species with high genetic diversity of wild and cultivated soybean lines. We have collected many semi-wild soybean lines, however, the information about the genetic diversity of these lines is limited. And also the phylogenetic relationship and genetic distance among the semi-wild, typical wild types (Glycine soja Sied. & Zucc.), and cultivated soybean(Glycine max (L.) Merr.) have been controversial. This study was carried out to analyze the diversity of the three groups, and to verify their genetic variation and relationships among them. The diversity indexes of typical wild, semi-wild, and cultivated soybean accessions were 0.854, 0.677, and 0.528, respectively. According to the cluster analysis for the genetic relationships, 58 accessions were defined into three genetic groups. Cluster I consisted of 20 cultivated soybean accessions and three semi-wild soybean lines. Cluster II contained 13 semi-wild soybean lines and one typical wild soybean line. Cluster II included 21 typical wild soybean lines and one semi-wild soybean line. Genetic distance between cultivated and semi-wild soybean, typical wild and semi-wild, and cultivated and typical wild were 0.525 0.761 and 0.810, respectively. The relationship between semi-wild soybean was much closer to the cultivated soybean the to the wild soybean
Anti-Inflammatory and Wound Healing Potential of Citrus Auraptene

Auraptene is the most abundant naturally occurring geranyloxycoumarin. It is primarily isolated from plants in the Rutaceae family, many of which, like citrus fruits, are used as food in many countries. Auraptene is a biologically active secondary metabolite with valuable properties. The aim of our study was to identify novel properties of auraptene with potential for managing periodontal diseases, an inflammatory disease of bacterial origin affecting the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. In vitro assays showed that auraptene decreased, in a dose-dependent manner, the secretion of matrix metalloproteinase 2 as well as key inflammatory mediators, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand-5 secreted by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans lipopolysaccharide-stimulated oral epithelial cells. Using gingival fibroblasts, auraptene showed a significant (P < .05) wound healing effect by its capacity to increase cell migration. In conclusion, auraptene shows promise for promoting wound healing and controlling periodontal diseases through its capacity to interfere with inflammatory mediator secretion.

<P>Growth hormone (GH) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of growth, development and body composition. In order to provide new insights into estrogenic endocrine disruptor (ED) activities in the pituitary gland and the potential role played by estrogen receptors (ERs) in mediating their effects <I>in vivo</I>, we examined <I>GH</I> expression in the pituitary gland of an immature rat model. At postnatal day 14, immature rats were treated with various doses of <I>4-tert</I>-octylphenol (OP), <I>p</I>-nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA), and the <I>GH</I> mRNA and protein expression levels were analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR and western blot/immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively. An anti-estrogen (ICI 182780) was used to examine the potential involvement of ERs in ED-induced GH expression during critical windows of development. <I>GH</I> mRNA expression increased significantly 48 h after treatment with a high dose (600 mg/kg body weight [BW]) of OP or NP. However, this induction was abolished completely by co-treatment with ICI 182780. No significant difference in <I>GH</I> mRNA expression was observed following treatment with BPA or co-treatment of BPA with the anti-estrogen. Exposure to high doses (600 mg/kg BW) of these EDs significantly enhanced GH protein expression in the rat pituitary gland, whereas pretreatment with ICI 182780 markedly reduced this expression. Taken together, we have demonstrated for the first time that <I>in vivo</I> exposure to EDs can induce <I>GH</I> mRNA and protein expression in the rat pituitary gland and that their activities may involve an ER-mediated signaling pathway. These results may provide critical evidence for ED-induced dysregulation of pituitary GH expression and thus may be important for elucidating the potential impacts of EDs in altered body growth and development and for predicting the health risks of ED exposure in humans and wildlife.</P>
