AN EXTENSION OF RANDOM SUMMATIONS OF INDEPENDENT AND IDENTICALLY DISTRIBUTED RANDOM VARIABLES
Giang, Le Truong,Hung, Tran Loc Korean Mathematical Society 2018 대한수학회논문집 Vol.33 No.2
The main goal of this paper is to study an extension of random summations of independent and identically distributed random variables when the number of summands in random summation is a partial sum of n independent, identically distributed, non-negative integer-valued random variables. Some characterizations of random summations are considered. The central limit theorems and weak law of large numbers for extended random summations are established. Some weak limit theorems related to geometric random sums, binomial random sums and negative-binomial random sums are also investigated as asymptotic behaviors of extended random summations.

A unified method for the fractional-order proportional-integral controller based on IMC scheme (IMC-FOPI) is proposed. The analytical tuning rules are derived for achieving the performance improvement in terms of both disturbance rejection and set-point tracking. Many illustrative examples are considered to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for both integer and fractional-order processes with time delays. In addition, the robust stability of fractional-order systems are also carried out in order to demonstrate that the proposed controller can hold well the robustness against perturbation uncertainty in the process models.

Backgrounds/Aims: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy (Ps–AH) based on portal ramification of the right anterior section (RAS) is a new technique to avoid unnecessarily transecting too much liver parenchyma, especially in cases of major anatomical hepatectomy. Methods: We prospectively assessed 26 patients with primary hepatic malignancies having undergone major Ps–AH based on portal ramification of the RAS from August 2018 to August 2022 (48 months). The perioperative indications, clinical data, intra-operative index, pathological postoperative specimens, postoperative complications, and follow-up results were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Among the 26 patients analyzed, there was just one case that had intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma The preoperative level of α– Fetoprotein was 25.2 ng/mL. All cases (100%) had Child–Pugh A liver function preoperatively. The ventral/dorsal RAS was preserved in 19 and 7 patients, respectively. The mean surgical margin was 6.2 mm. The mean surgical time was 228.5 minutes, while the mean blood loss was 255 mL. In pathology, 5 cases (19.2%) had microvascular invasion, and in the group of HCC patients, 92% of all cases had moderate or poor tumor differentiation. Six cases (23.1%) of postoperative complications were graded over III according to the Clavien–Dindo system, including in three patients resistant ascites or intra-abdominal abscess that required intervention. Conclusions: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy based on portal ramification of the RAS to achieve R0-resection was safe and effective, with favorable short-term outcomes. This technique can be used widely in clinical practice.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fish is the most perishable of fresh foods, but it is held in high regard for its flavor, taste and nutrition for the human body. Until now, most studies on monitoring the freshness of fish have used semiconducting metal oxide sensors that consume much power in sensing operation. To supply the operational sensing power and the power for wireless communication, any wireless sensor module needs a battery attached, and this entails extra effort for a regular battery change. Therefore, we developed a novel fish monitoring system in which no battery is needed for the sensing module. This study proposes a novel proximal fish freshness monitoring system. The novel smart sensing tag module has been developed as a self-powered device by using an additional energy harvesting circuit that operates at a frequency of 13.56MHz. The harvester can collect sufficient radio frequency (RF) energy from the reader by using RF energy coupling within a maximum distance of 30cm; then, the received power is stored in a single energy chip for supplying to the sensing circuit. The fish freshness is monitored by sensor modules for temperature and either hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or ammonia (NH3) gas concentration measurement in the fish packaging. The sensing module is designed using ultra-low-power sensors that consume less than ∼10mW, enabling us to extend the distance between the RF reader and the smart sensor tag for effective RF energy coupling and sensing data transmission. The results of freshness monitoring of a seafish package are classified into four grades to indicate the food quality: good, normal, caution, and bad. The proposed sensor tag can be used to predict the quality of packaged fish by accurate monitoring of temperature and the concentration of H2S or NH3 in range of −40 to 105°C, 0–200ppm, and 0–100ppm, respectively.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> To supply the operational sensing power and the power for wireless communication, any wireless sensor module needs a battery attached, and this entails extra effort for a regular battery change. </LI> <LI> We developed a novel fish monitoring system in which no battery is needed for the sensing module. Microbial communities in mangrove forests have recently been intensively investigated to explain the ecosystem function of mangroves. In this study, the soil microbial communities under young (< 11 years-old) and old ( >17 years-old) mangroves have been studied during dry and wet seasons. In addition, biogeochemical properties of sediments and methane emission from the two different mangrove ages were measured. The results showed that young and old mangrove soil microbial communities were significantly different on both seasons. Seasons seem to affect microbial communities more than the mangrove age does. Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi were two top abundant phyla showing >15%. Physio-chemical properties of sediment samples showed no significant difference between mangrove ages, seasons, nor depth levels, except for TOC showing significant difference between the two seasons. The methane emission rates from the mangroves varied depending on seasons and ages of the mangrove. However, this did not show significant correlation with the microbial community shifts, suggesting that abundance of methanogens was not the driving factor for mangrove soil microbial communities.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Because of the side effects and incomplete recovery from current therapy, stem cell therapy emerges as a potential therapy for CVD treatment, and endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) is one of the key stem cells used for therapeutic applications. The effect of this therapy required the expansion of EPC function. To enhance the EPC activation, proliferation, and angiogenesis using dronedarone hydrochloride (DH) is the purpose of this study. DH received approval for atrial fibrillation treatment and its cardiovascular protective effects were already reported. In this study, DH significantly increased EPC proliferation, tube formation, migration, and maintained EPCs surface marker expression. In addition, DH treatment up-regulated the phosphorylation of AKT and reduced the reactive oxygen species production. In summary, the cell priming by DH considerably improved the functional activity of EPCs, and the use of which might be a novel strategy for CVD treatment.

Background 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been used as a standard chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal cancer (CRC). However, chemo-resistant cancer cells can survive under chemotherapeutic regimens, resulting in cancer recurrence. Thus, a novel approach is required to overcome chemo-resistance in CRC. Objective Recently, oleuropein (OLP), an extract derived from olive leaves, has shown anticancer eff ects and induces apoptosis in cancer cells; however, the role of OLP in 5-FU-resistant cells remains to be elucidated. Therefore, we have assessed the anticancer eff ect of OLP on tumor spheres and 5-FU-resistant cells, but also synergistic eff ect in combination of OLP and 5-FU. Results Our fi ndings revealed that OLP had a marked suppressive eff ect on tumor sphere formation capacity. Annexin V-PI staining data showed that OLP-induced apoptosis occurred in a dose-dependent manner. Mitochondrial fragmentation and mitochondrial superoxide production were observed following treatment with OLP. OLP treatment drastically suppressed the metastatic potential, including cell migration ability and anchorage-independent growth capability. In addition, combination treatment with 5-FU and OLP revealed a synergistic eff ect on cell viability in DLD-1 cells and 5-FU-resistant cells. Conclusion These fi ndings showed the suppressive eff ects of OLP against the colorectal tumor spheres and 5-FU-resistant cells. In addition, these results off er the new insights into novel therapeutic strategies for combining 5-FU and OLP in patients with chemo-resistant CRC.
