Upper eyelid Merkel cell carcinoma treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision

        Toto, Vito,Colapietra, Alfredo,Alessandri-Bonetti, Mario,Vincenzi, Bruno,Devirgiliis, Valeria,Panasiti, Vincenzo,Persichetti, Paolo Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association 2019 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.20 No.2

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare cutaneous carcinoma, featured by an aggressive clinical course and a mortality rate of 28% at 2 years. A 71-year-old female was affected by a 4.1-cm-wide locally advanced Merkel cell carcinoma of the upper eyelid, previously misdiagnosed as chalazion, with involvement of the extraocular muscles. Although the tumor showed a macroscopic spontaneous regression in size after the incisional biopsy, the mass was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision. Good functional and aesthetic result with preservation of the eyeball and absence of tumor recurrence were achieved at 3-year follow-up. In our experience, the combination of the inflammatory cascade due to the incisional biopsy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy led to the regression of a locally advanced large Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid.

Quality and Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria Diversity of Rabbit Meat Bekasam-Fermented Meat

        Eka Wulandari,Husmy Yurmiati,Toto Subroto,Kusmajadi Suradi 한국축산식품학회 2020 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.40 No.3

Rabbit meat bekasam is a traditional fermentation product from Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the chemical and microbiological characteristics of rabbit meat bekasam during the fermentation process in order to isolate, characterize (in vitro and in vivo), and identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as the probiotic candidate. The chemical contents of bekasam on 7-day fermentation were investigated in explorative and experimental methods in a completely randomized design. A proximate analysis reported a decrease in the moisture content, fat and carbohydrate content, and an increase in protein content. Also, lactic acid content was increased from 0.48% to 1.12%, and pH was decreased from 5.3 to 4.3. Other properties indicated different values, such as bacteria (2.75×106 to 4.45×107 CFU/g), total LAB (3.82×106 to 4.67×108 CFU/g), total yeast (9.89×106 to 3.82×108 CFU/g) and total mould (4.34×101 to 4.86×103 CFU/g). The experiment produced nine LAB isolates, including two probiotics subjected to further 16S rRNA gene analysis, which indicated that Lactobacillus buchneri was the potential probiotic isolate. After being tested on BALB/c mice, L. buchneri could improve the immune system by inhibiting the growth of Coliform and Salmonella.

Parasitoid wasp communities on oil palm plantation: Effects of natural habitat existence are obscured by lepidopteran abundance

        Akhmad Rizali,Sri Karindah,Toto Himawan,Muhamad Luthfie Tri Meiadi,Bambang Tri Rahardjo,Nurindah,Bandung Sahari 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.3

The existence of natural habitat around agroecosystem plays a pivotal role in maintaining the presence of natural enemies especially parasitoids. Natural habitat can fail to support biological pest control in agroecosystem due to a particular condition. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of natural habitat existence on parasitoid wasp communities in oil palm plantation. The ecological research was conducted in the oil palm plantation located in Central Borneo, Indonesia. Twelve plots of oil palm plantations with different habitat characteristics were selected. Insects were sampled using canopy knockdown fogging with a pyrethroid insecticide. In total, 237 species and 2669 individuals of parasitoid wasps belong to 15 families were collected from all research areas. The results showed that species richness and abundance of parasitoid wasps in oil palm plantation was affected by lepidopteran abundance and not by the existence of natural habitat. However, the distance and area of natural habitat influenced the species composition of parasitoid wasps. We concluded that the existence of natural habitat still can maintain the parasitoid wasps in oil palm plantation. Thus, efforts on maintaining parasitoid wasp diversity for management of biological control in oil palm plantation need to pay attention by conserving the natural habitats.

Rumen Microbial Population in the In vitro Fermentation of Different Ratios of Forage and Concentrate in the Presence of Whole Lerak (Sapindus rarak) Fruit Extract

Suharti, Sri,Astuti, Dewi Apri,Wina, Elizabeth,Toharmat, Toto Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2011 Animal Bioscience Vol.24 No.8

This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of lerak extract on the dynamic of rumen microbes in the in vitro fermentation of diet with different ratios of forage and concentrate. In vitro fermentation was conducted according to the method of Tilley and Terry (1963). The design of experiment was a factorial block design with 2 factors. The first factor was the ratio of forage and concentrate (90:10, 80:20, and 70:30 w/w) and the second factor was the level of lerak extract (0, 0.6, and 0.8 mg/ml). Total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration, proportional VFA and NH3 concentration were measured at 4 h incubation. Protozoal numbers in the buffered rumen fluid after 4 and 24 h of incubation were counted under a microscope. Bacterial DNAs of buffered rumen fluid were isolated from incubated samples after 24 h of incubation using a QiaAmp kit. Total bacteria, Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus, and Prevotella ruminicola were quantified using real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Lerak extract markedly reduced protozoal numbers in buffered rumen fluid of all diets after 24 h of incubation. Total bacteria did not change with lerak extract addition. While no difference in F. succinogenes was found, there was a slight increase in R. albus number and a significant enhancement in P. ruminicola number by increasing the level of lerak extract in all diets. Propionate concentration significantly increased in the presence of lerak extract at level 0.8 mg/ml. It was concluded that the addition of lerak extract could modify rumen fermentation and had positive effects on rumen microbes.

The Role of Lateral Retinacular Release in Preventing Patellofemoral Malalignment in Double-Bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Randomized Controlled Trial

        Ludwig Andre Pontoh,Ismail Hadisoebroto Dilogo,Erica Kholinne,Jessica Fiolin,Toto Suryo Efar 대한정형외과학회 2022 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.14 No.3

Background: Loss of internal rotation stability is the major cause of pain after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Many authors described measures to treat this problem to no avail. This is the first study evaluating the role of lateral release with double-bundle ACLR to prevent patellofemoral malalignment after ACLR. Methods: A total of 100 patients were included in this prospective study between January 2018 and December 2019. We compared single-bundle ACLR (group 1, n = 30), double-bundle ACLR (group 2, n = 30), and double-bundle ACLR with lateral release (group 3, n = 40). Clinical outcome was evaluated with the Kujala score while radiological outcome was evaluated using the tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TTTG) distance in magnetic resonance imaging. The preoperative and postoperative values were compared. Results: At the final follow-up of 6–18 months, group 3 showed the lowest TTTG value (6.7 ± 4.69) compared to group 2 (9.1 ± 4.83) and group 1 (11.74 ± 1.76) (p = 0.03). The Kujala score was significantly improved in all groups: from 68.83 to 89.90 in group 1, from 70.02 to 91.23 in group 2, and from 69.71 to 95.05 in group 3 (p = 0.03). Group 3 showed the most superior improvement in the Kujala score (25.34) compare to group 1 (21.07) and group 3 (21.21) (p = 0.012). Conclusions: Concomitant lateral retinacular release significantly improved the Kujala score. It may serve as a valuable option to overcome patellofemoral pain syndrome in ACLR.

The Influence of Risk Perception on Destination Attachment and Voluntourism Behavior: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia

PANGARIBUAN, Christian Haposan,MANURUNG, Adler Haymans,SAROSO, Hardijanto,RUSMANTO, Toto Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

Alternative forms of travel have recently been delivering rewarding experiences and promising sustainable development for the tourism sector. However, it also depends on the uncertainties, consequences, and emotional connection with the destination. So far, the scholars have done limited empirical studies on volunteer tourism in Bali. Thus, this study tries to measure volunteer tourists' behavior by understanding the relationship between destination attachment, risk perception, and voluntourism behavior. Therefore, a study on the inclusivity of tourists' attachment to a particular place and perceived risks in volunteer tourism is an essential need to sustain the tourism industry. Data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares with smartPLS software. This study is based on a sample of ninety-three tourists of generation Z in Bali, Indonesia. Both outer model and inner model evaluation were conducted to ensure the robustness of the proposed model. The findings showed that destination attachment does have a direct and significant effect on voluntourism behavior. As expected, we also find that perceived risk has a significant moderating role on the relationship. Hence, greater efforts are needed to improve the image of the place by highlighting the characteristics of the locations. At the same time, it is necessary to put considerable effort to alleviate unfavorable conditions by creating safe environment surrounding the destination.

Enhanced Hall mobility and d0 ferromagnetism in Li-doped ZnO thin films prepared by aerosol-assisted CVD

        Muhammad Arief Mustajab,Pepen Arifi n,Suprijadi Suprijadi,Toto Winata 대한금속·재료학회 2024 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.20 No.2

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin fi lms with diff erent concentrations of lithium, from 0 to 15 mol%, have been grown on Si(100) substratesby employing aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD). The structural, electronic, and magnetic propertiesof the ZnO thin fi lms were investigated as the eff ect of Li doping concentration. SEM images of surface morphologyreveal that the undoped and low-concentration Li-doped ZnO thin fi lms exhibit irregular ellipsoid grains. In comparison, the ZnO thin fi lms with higher Li concentration consist of multi-aligned rod-like and hexagonal-shaped grains. XRD patternanalysis confi rms that all grown ZnO thin fi lms exhibit a single polycrystalline phase of hexagonal wurtzite crystal. Thelattice reduction was observed in the Li-doped thin fi lms indicating that the substitutional Li eff ectively occupied the Znlattice site. The Hall eff ect measurement demonstrates that Li-doped ZnO fi lms possess p -type conductivity. The resistivityof Li-doped ZnO thin fi lms decreases with an increase in Li doping concentration while the hole carrier density increases. The Hall mobility tends to increase as more Li doping concentration is given, with the highest Hall mobility obtained from15 mol% Li-doped fi lm with a value of 85.88 cm 2 /V s. The VSM study demonstrates that all grown ZnO thin fi lms exhibitan M-H hysteresis curve, indicating d 0 ferromagnetism behavior at room temperature, with coercivity ranging from 202 to373 Oe. The highest saturation magnetization was obtained from 10 mol% Li-doped fi lms, with a value of 5.55 × 10 –2 emu/g.
