First Report on Multidrug-Resistant Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates in Children Admitted to Tertiary Hospitals in Vietnam

( Nguyen Thai Son ),( Vu Thi Thu Huong ),( Vu Thi Kim Lien ),( Do Thi Quynh Nga ),( Tran Thi Hai Au ),( Tang Thi Nga ),( Le Nguyen Minh Hoa ),( Tran Quang Binh ) 한국미생물생명공학회(구 한국산업미생물학회) 2019 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.29 No.9

The extensive distribution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a threat to healthcare worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the MDR and molecular patterns of MRSA isolates in children admitted to the two biggest tertiary care pediatric hospitals in northern and southern Vietnam. A total of 168 MRSA strains were collected to determine antibiotic susceptibility by minimum inhibitory concentration tests. Antibiotic-resistant genes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, and multilocus sequence typing were used for the molecular characterization of MRSA. Among the total strains, the MDR rate (51.8%) was significantly higher in the northern hospital than in the southern hospital (73% vs. 39%, p < 0.0001). The MDR-MRSA with the highest rates were “ciprofloxacin-erythromycin-gentamicin-tetracyclines” (35.6%), followed by “erythromycin-tetracycline-chloramphenicol” (24.1%), and “ciprofloxacin-erythromycin-gentamicin” (19.5%), showing an accumulative total of 79.3%. The most susceptible antibiotics were rifampicin (100%) and vancomycin (100%), followed by doxycycline (94.0%), meropenem (78.0%), and cefotaxime (75.0%). The SCCmecII strains showed greater resistance to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, meropenem and cephalosporins compared with the other strains. The SCCmecII strains exhibited the highest rate in the tested genes (aacA/aphD: 55.2%, ermA/B/C: 89.7%, and tetK/M: 82.8%). ST5-SCCmecII was the predominant clone in the northern hospital, whereas SCCmecIVa was more pronounced in the southern hospital. In conclusion, our results raised concerns about the predominant MDR-MRSA strains in the pediatric hospitals in Vietnam. The north-south difference in the antibiotic resistance patterns and genetic structure of MRSA suggests different MRSA origins and various uses of antimicrobial agents between the two regions.

Exchange Rate Volatility and FDI Response during the Financial Crisis: Empirical Evidence from Vietnam

HUONG, Tram Thi Xuan,NGUYEN, My-Linh Thi,LIEN, Nguyen Thi Kim Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

This study is to examine the foreign direct investment (FDI) response to real effective exchange rate volatility in Vietnam by using the vector autoregression model. The research data are quarterly frequency data in the period from 2004:Q1 to 2019:Q2. The data on real effective exchange rate were collected from the statistics of Bruegel (Europe) and FDI data were collected from the International Financial Statistics. The quantitative study was conducted with two steps: (1) measuring exchange rate volatility by the GARCH(1,1) method; and (2) examining the impact of exchange rate volatility on FDI in the context of the global financial crisis. The estimation results show that FDI responded significantly to real exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods at the 5% significance level. The FDI response increased after the exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods, and the impact extended to the lag of 6 periods, and then gradually stabilized. The research findings indicate that FDI in Vietnam responds positively and significantly to exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods. Simultaneously, the negative impact of the global financial crisis in 2008 with the lag of 2 periods leads to a slight decrease in FDI inflows into Vietnam.

Impact of long COVID-19 on posttraumatic stress disorder as modified by health literacy: an observational study in Vietnam

        Han Thi Vo,Tien Duc Dao,Tuyen Van Duong,Tan Thanh Nguyen,Binh Nhu Do,Tinh Xuan Do,Khue Minh Pham,Vinh Hai Vu,Linh Van Pham,Lien Thi Hong Nguyen,Lan Thi Huong Le,Hoang Cong Nguyen,Nga Hoang Dang,Trung 질병관리청 2024 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.15 No.1

Objectives: The incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has increased, particularly among individuals who have recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Health literacy is considered a “social vaccine” that helps people respond effectively to the pandemic. We aimed to investigate the association between long COVID-19 and PTSD, and to examine the modifying role of health literacy in this association. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 18 hospitals and health centers in Vietnam from December 2021 to October 2022. We recruited 4,463 individuals who had recovered from COVID-19 infection for at least 4 weeks. Participants provided information about their sociodemographics, clinical parameters, health-related behaviors, health literacy (using the 12-item short-form health literacy scale), long COVID-19 symptoms and PTSD (Impact Event Scale-Revised score of 33 or higher). Logistic regression models were used to examine associations and interactions. Results: Out of the study sample, 55.9% had long COVID-19 symptoms, and 49.6% had PTSD. Individuals with long COVID-19 symptoms had a higher likelihood of PTSD (odds ratio [OR], 1.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.63–2.12; p<0.001). Higher health literacy was associated with a lower likelihood of PTSD (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97–0.99; p=0.001). Compared to those with long COVID-19 symptoms and the lowest health literacy score, those with long COVID-19 symptoms and a 1-point health literacy increment had a 3% lower likelihood of PTSD (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.96–0.99; p=0.001).Conclusion: Health literacy was found to be a protective factor against PTSD and modified the negative impact of long COVID-19 symptoms on PTSD.

        Doan, Huong Thi Thanh,Noh, Jin Hyeong,Choe, Se Eun,Yoo, Mi Sun,Kim, Young Ha,Reddy, Kondreddy Eswar,Van Quyen, Dong,Nguyen, Lien Thi Kim,Nguyen, Thuy Thi Dieu,Kweon, Chang Hee,Jung, Suk Chan,Chang, Ki Elsevier 2013 Veterinary parasitology Vol.196 No.3

Abstract

Ticks are vectors of various pathogens that affect humans and animals throughout the world. Anaplasma bovis is one of the most important tick-borne pathogens that cause cattle diseases but there is still very little information available about this agent in Korea. In the present study, 535 Haemaphysalis longicornis tick pools were analyzed from grazing cattle in five Korean provinces. A. bovis was detected in 50 (9.3%) of 535 tick pools using 16S rRNA-based PCR. A. bovis infections were detected for the first time in ticks feeding on cattle in Chungbuk, Geongbuk, and Jeonbuk provinces in Korea. The 50 positive PCR products were sequenced successfully and compared with sequences in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis of the Korean isolates classified them into four genotypes with nucleotide sequence identities of 99.4–100%. Two of the four genotypes had high similarity (99.8–100%) with known sequences. The other two genotypes have never been identified.

Impact of Administrative Post and Gender on Lecturers' Research Motivation in Vietnam

TRAN, Thi Kim Nhung,NGUYEN, Thanh Do,PHAM, Thanh Van,NGUYEN, Thi Lien Huong,GIANG, Minh Duc,HA, Ngoc Thang Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

This study examines the simultaneous impact of gender and administrative post on the research motivation of university lecturers. There are 475 selected questionnaires that are qualified for data processing and the collected data are analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results show the relationship between administration involvement and scientific research of lecturers. In general, lecturers with administrative post have higher research motivation than lecturers without administrative post. More specifically, the level of administrative post has positive correlation with research motivation of female lecturers, but has negative correlation of male lecturers. It means that a female lecturer with higher administrative post also has more motivation to conduct research. Conversely, the higher administrative post a male lecturer has, the less research motivation he is. The cause of this difference is the pressure of earning money on Asian men, including Vietnamese men, who are considered to be main breadwinners of their family. When having an administration post, the more chances male lecturers have to earn money, the less time they can spend for scientific research. This suggests that the solution for managers is to perform annual assessment, fulfill promotion process, build up motivation and reward system, and establish recruitment and promotion policies.

Influences of External Factors on Business Performance of Domestic Animal Feed Enterprises in Vietnam

Van Hau NGUYEN,Thi Quynh Lien DUONG,To Thi Huong QUYNH,To Thi Thu TRANG 한국유통과학회 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.11

Vietnam is the country with the largest animal feed production in Southeast Asia. Domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises play an important role in animal husbandry in particular and in agriculture in general. However, domestic animal feed enterprises in Vietnam are encountering shortcomings. This paper is conducted to investigate the impact levels of external determinants on business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises, including: (i) policy and economic mechanism, (ii) supply-demand of animal feed products, and (iii) nature and level of market competition. We presented a research method, explaining the dependent variable ‘business performance’ and the independent variables. Data were collected from 120 questionnaires from domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises. Based on these data, we use Cronbach’s Alpha, EFA and run regression model for assessing the impact levels of each independent variable on the dependent variable of business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises. The results show that three external determinants including (i) policy and economic mechanism, (ii) supply-demand of animal feed products, and (iii) nature and level of market competition, have positive relationships with business performance. Based on the findings, some recommendations are given for improving business performance of domestic animal feed manufacturing enterprises to ensure sustainability.

HA, Ngoc Thang,NGUYEN, Thi Lien Huong,PHAM, Thanh Van,NGUYEN, Thi Hong Tham Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

The study examines factors that influence shopping intention of online consumers in Vietnam. Studied factors include consumers' attitude, subjective norms, perception of behavioral control, perception of usefulness, perceived risks and trust. The expansion of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) are used as basic theories. We have surveyed people who have experiences on online shopping. There are 836 selected questionnaires that are qualified for data processing. The collected data are analyzed through a process which starts from scale reliability test to exploratory factor analysis (EFA), correlation analysis and regression analysis. The results show that shopping intention of online consumers are positively affected by their attitude, subjective norms, perception of behavioral control, perception of usefulness and trust. In contrast, online shopping intention is negatively affected by the perceived risks that online shopping could bring. Among those factors, the perception of risk is shown to have the strongest influence to online shopping intention. The findings of this study suggest that managers and retailers can apply cash-on-delivery method and design their website with user-friendly interface to enhance online shopping intention of consumers. The Government is also recommended to fulfill the law system to reduce customers' perception of financial risks.

Investigating Foreign Direct Investment Attractive Factors of Korean Direct Investment into Vietnam

TA, Van Loi,LE, Quoc Hoi,NGUYEN, Thi Lien Huong,PHAN, Thuy Thao,DO, Anh Duc Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.6

This paper aims to investigate FDI attractive factors, which are important to formulate policies to attract Korean direct investment into Vietnam. Based on the literature review and the results of interview with 27 Korean investors in Vietnam, we determined the model of variables attracting Korea's FDI into Vietnam. It is used to assess the impact of attractive factors belonging to three groups of variables to support investment decision; they are macroeconomics variables (including market size factor, labor cost factor, and market openness factor), policies variables (including monetary policy factor and tax rate gap factor), and microeconomics variables (geographic advantage factor representative by location). This research also utilized a relatively new quantitative research method based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ARDL) with the time data chain from 1995 to 2017 of Korean FDI into Vietnam. It analyzes long-term relationships between dependent variables and independent variables. The result of this study indicates that there are three positive factors (low wages, trade openness and government policy) explaining the FDI flows in the long term. The result also shows that incentive tax policy has had a positive impact on Korean FDI, which has satisfied the aim of seeking efficiency of Korean investors.

Differential Expression of Immune-Related Genes in Larval and Adult Apis mellifera Honeybees Challenged with Korean Sacbrood Virus

        Mi-Sun Yoo,Ha-Na Jung,Thi Bich Thao Le,Young-Ha Kim,Nam-Hee Kim,Kondreddy Eswar Reddy,Jin-Hyeong Noh,Huong Thi Thanh Doan,Lien Thi Kim Nguyen,Suk-Chan Jung,Seung-Won Kang 한국양봉학회 2015 韓國養蜂學會誌 Vol.30 No.1

Recently, the Korean sacbrood virus (KSBV) caused great loss of honeybee colonies in Korean Apis mellifera. Three antimicrobial peptide genes (AMPs) (abaecin (ABA), defensin (DEF) and hymenoptaecin (HYM)) and two immune-related enzyme genes (phenol-oxidase (PO) and lysozyme (LYS)) were investigated using qRT-PCR as a measure of the defense reactions of honeybee larvae and adults challenged with KSBV in vitro. Transcript levels of three AMPs were upregulated in adults exposed to KSBV, compared to control adults. ABA and DEF transcripts were 22.7 and 21.9 fold higher (P<0.05), respectively, after 24h exposure while HYM transcript did not change significantly. At this time point, PO and LYS mRNA levels were 18.08 and 16.03 fold higher, respectively, in KSBVinfected adult bees compared to control adults (P<0.05). By contrast, the larvae infected with KSBV had downregulated expression of AMPs and slight up-regulation of PO and LYS compared to the controls. These results suggest that the differential expression of the genes studied could indicate their involvement in defense processes against KSBV in adult and larva bees.
