Quantitative analysis of images of cells and tissues is applied for both research as well as clinical diagnostic applications. Examples of such applications are the quantification of DNA ploidy and of hormone receptors, as a prognostic tool in oncology, or the morphometric analysis of cells and tissues. In addition th these topics, analysis of cells and chromosome stained by fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) has become a major application, due to the fact that instrumentation(suitable cameras) as well as reagents(a variety of probes) have become commercially available. At present, quantitative analysis of FISH images is becoming increasingly important research and diagnosis. This paper describes the its main application and focusses on its future impact.

This paper analyzes six different ways of articulating the relationship between art and politics. It calls attention to the differences that lurk behind the seemingly simple phrase-everywhere in vogue today-the “politics of aesthetics.” Five of these models are drawn from contemporary discussions regarding the politics of art. The last model is the attempt to develop an account of the politics of aesthetics that is faithful to the diffcult and ambiguous dimensions of the aesthetic experience that were hinted at by the texts of classical philosophical aesthetics. Most notably, this paper is concerned with the idea that the aesthetic experience can be understood as a form of disinterested contemplation-one that is not reducible to cognitive or moral considerations-and with some of the consequences that this entails. It explores some of the political signifcance that can be attributed to this idea of disinterested contemplation, arguing that the aesthetic should be understood as a withdrawal from the world’s pre-established meanings. Unlike some of the other thinkers discussed in this paper, this author doubts that a single, uniform meaning can be ascribed to the aesthetic experience. I thus argue that we need to approach the aesthetic through the networks of textual signifcance that have been built up around it. Throughout this paper, I attempt to explain how the efforts to link art and aesthetics to politics simultaneously give rise to ideas about the nature of the human community. In looking at the sixth and fnal model, what I have called the “anarchical politics of aesthetic ambiguity,” I argue that the aesthetic tradition offers a rather unique way of understanding the relationship between the individual and the community. Here, we see that the aesthetic is prone to a number of paradoxes, central among them the one that makes art the bearer of a solipsistic pleasure in which we nevertheless discover our capacity for genuinely communicating with others, outside of clichés and banalities.

Teacher noticing has been termed consequential to teaching because what you see and do not see impacts decisions made within the classroom. Further, how a teacher responds to student thinking depends on what a teacher sees in student thinking. Within this study we sought to understand what teachers noticed within an engineering lesson and the decisions made as a result of that noticing. Findings indicate that student teachers and cooperating teachers drew on their pedagogical knowledge for decisions, rather than taking up the integrated content of student thinking and understanding. These findings serve as a guide for the experiences needed to engage in the complex work of teaching or, more specifically, implementing engineering into instruction through a responsive teaching frame.

<P>This paper describes an experimental study on an integrated servo control method. Conventional servo control schemes may experience performance degradation under the presence of physical constraints. An integrated scheme is proposed in this study to address this problem. In the proposed method, three controllers correspond to autopilot commands directly instead of four actuators. Various simulations and experiments show that the proposed integrated servo control method provides better performance than the conventional ones.</P>

<P>In the past decade, there has been a resurgence in the field of unobtrusive cardiomechanical assessment, through advancing methods for measuring and interpreting ballistocardiogram (BCG) and seismocardiogram (SCG) signals. Novel instrumentation solutions have enabled BCG and SCG measurement outside of clinical settings, in the home, in the field, and even in microgravity. Customized signal processing algorithms have led to reduced measurement noise, clinically relevant feature extraction, and signal modeling. Finally, human subjects physiology studies have been conducted using these novel instruments and signal processing tools with promising results. This paper reviews the recent advances in these areas of modern BCG and SCG research.</P>
A Map-like Micro-Organization of Grid Cells in the Medial Entorhinal Cortex

<P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>How the topography of neural circuits relates to their function remains unclear. Although topographic maps exist for sensory and motor variables, they are rarely observed for cognitive variables. Using calcium imaging during virtual navigation, we investigated the relationship between the anatomical organization and functional properties of grid cells, which represent a cognitive code for location during navigation. We found a substantial degree of grid cell micro-organization in mouse medial entorhinal cortex: grid cells and modules all clustered anatomically. Within a module, the layout of grid cells was a noisy two-dimensional lattice in which the anatomical distribution of grid cells largely matched their spatial tuning phases. This micro-arrangement of phases demonstrates the existence of a topographical map encoding a cognitive variable in rodents.
