A rare case of primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma(PISCC) arising from lining epithelium of a dentigerous cyst is described. The case occurred at the left mandibular 3rd molar region in a 56-year-old Japanese woman. Clinical observation revealed cyst formation with an impacted 3rd molar, a common finding in dentigerous cyst, in the left mandible. Histopathologically, the lining epithelium of the cyst demonstrated transition from epithelial dysplasia to invasive squamous cell carcinoma(SCC). This case was diagnosed as PISCC arising from lining epithelium of a dentigerous cyst.

This report describes a case of odontogenic cyst with keratinization and dysplastic change of lining epithelium, which showed the manifestation of inflammatory radicular cyst, clinically. A 28-year-old man complained of dull pain in the right mandibular molar region. Radiographically a well-defined oval cystic lesion with non-vital teeth, a common finding in radicular cyst, was observed. Microscopically, the lining epithelium of the cyst demonstrated both keratinization and severe epithelial dysplasia. Atypical findings such as hyperchromatic nuclei, increase of N/C ratio and drop shaped rege ridge were observed in the lining epithelium. However, definite invasion into fibrous connective tissue was not found. Immunohistochemically, the dysplastic lining epithelium was highly positive for proliferative marker, Ki-67. Based on the dysplastic changes of lining epithelium, this periapical lesion would be considered to be signs of malignant change. From this case, we conclude that definitive diagnosis by microscopical examination should be made, even if the periapical lesion would be clinically considered as inflammatory radicular cyst.

Background: Several systematic reviews have reported on the conservative treatment of full-thickness rotator cuff tears; however, clinical results of this treatment still remain determined. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro, and CINAHL databases were systematically searched for randomized clinical trials and observational studies. Two independent researchers reviewed a total of 2,981 articles, 28 of which met the criteria for inclusion in the study. Clinical outcome measures included Constant score, visual analog scale score for pain, range of motion, and short-form 36. The meta-analysis used a linear mixed model weighted with the variance of the estimate. Results: The meta-analysis showed a significant improvement after surgery. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and surgical outcomes of subependymoma patients from the 2022 Neurospinal Society of Japan multicenter intramedullary spinal cord tumor study. Methods: Twenty-six patients with spinal cord subependymoma who were included in the index study of 1,033 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Mean patient age was 49.4 years. Seventeen patients were men and 9 were women. Sensory disturbance was reported in 22 patients and motor weakness in 18. Median duration of symptoms was 24 months. The tumor was eccentrically located in 19 patients (73.1%) and unilateral in 17 (65.4%). Gross total resection was achieved in 6 patients (23.1%). The same rate for ependymoma patients in the index study was significantly higher (74.8%). Median follow-up was 40.5 months (interquartile range, 18–68 months). In 2 patients who underwent only partial resection, reoperation was required owing to progression 68 and 90 months after surgery, respectively. No recurrence occurred in patients who underwent gross total resection. Five patients experienced neurological worsening after surgery. Conclusion: Although spinal cord subependymoma can be difficult to distinguish from other intramedullary spinal cord lesions before surgery, it is characterized by an indolent clinical course and eccentric location. Surgical treatment should prioritize functional preservation because the prognosis is good even after subtotal resection.

일본의 공업고등학교 졸업생들은자신의 전공 영역에서는 충분한 기능을 보여줄 수 있을지라도 국립대학 입학을 위한 시험을 통과하기에는 어려운 실정이다. Niigata대학, Nagasaki 대학 그리고 Toyama 대학의 공학부 교수들은 대학 입학 시험을 위한 과제를 마련하기 위하여 1994년부터 공동으로 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 학생들의 교육적 배경과 필요에 부합하는 일반 교육과정을 설치하고 보충수업을 제공하고 있다. 이러한 프로젝트가 공식적으로는 1999년 종료되었지만 Niigata 대학에서 계속적으로 진행되고 있다. While graduates of Japan's technical high schools might demonstrate skills in a given specialty, they would be hard-pressed in any attempt to pass national universities' notorious entrance examinations. In a collaborative effort begun in 1994, the faculties of engineering at Niigata, Nagasaki, and Toyama Universities set about the task of preparing entrance examinations, and a general curriculum geared to the needs and educational backgrounds of these students, offering them supplementary lessons. While the larger project officially ended in 1999, we are carrying the research forward in Niigata University.
Isolation and Mapping of 62 New RFLP Markers on Human Chromosome Ⅱ

To obtain new RFLP markers on human chromosome 11 for a high-resolution map, we constructed a cosmid library from a Chinese hamster × human somatic hybrid cell line that retains only human chromosome 11 in a Chinese hamster genomic background. A total of 3,500 cosmids were isolated by colony hybridization with labeled human genomic DNA was prepared from 130 of these cosmid clones and examined for RFLP. In 62 of them, polymorphism was detected with one or more enzymes; four RFLPs were VNTR systems. All polymorphism were assigned to on one of 22 intervals obtained by mapping on a deletion panel of 15 somatic hybrid cell lines containing parts of chromosome 11; 11 clones were finely mapped by in situ hybridization. Although RFLP makers were scattered on the whole chromosome, they were found predominantly in the regions of R-banding. These DNA markers will contribute to fine mapping of genes causing inherited disorders and tumor-suppressor genes that reside on chromosome 11. Furthermore, as one-third of the cosmid clones revealed a band or bands in Chinese hamster DNA, indicating sequence conservation, this subset of clones may be useful for isolating biologically important genes on chromosome 11.

Isolated right ventricular (RV) hypoplasia is a rare congenital anomaly in which the apical trabecular component of the ventricle fails to develop. In severe forms of isolated RV hypoplasia, patients usually develop cyanosis early in life and require prompt surgical intervention. Mild forms, however, can be asymptomatic until the development of severe tricuspid regurgitation due to annular dilatation. We report a 50-year-old woman with isolated RV apical hypoplasia who presented to our hospital 18 years ago and was followed with serial imaging studies.
