Optical anisotropy of GaNAs grown on GaAs(0 0 1)substrate

In this paper GaNxAs1. x surfaces during growth are observed using reectance dierence or reectance anisotropy spectroscopy(RDS or RAS). The epi-layer was grown by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system with a RF nitrogen prasma source.RD spectra showed broader structure and reduced amplitude compared to those of GaAs surfaces; GaAs(2×4)-like features werestill observed with weak and blue-shifted peaks. In the low growth temperature region, an extra structure was also observed around 3.02 eV. We proposed that GaNxAs1-x surface can be classied into three types of the surface.

Background: Our objective was to evaluate the location of popliteal artery (PA) in osteotomy planes during high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and to determine a safer angle for screw drilling to the tibial tuberosity during distal tuberosity osteotomy (DTO). Methods: Twenty knees in 20 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced computed tomography for cardiovascular diseases were examined. Osteotomy planes for open-wedge HTO (OWHTO) and hybrid closed-wedge HTO (hybrid CWHTO) were created using three-dimensional bone models. The distance from the posterior cortex of the tibia to the PA (dPC-PA) in the osteotomy planes was measured in the virtual osteotomy planes. The dangerous point (Point D1) was defined as the point 17.5 mm away from PA, setting the working length of the bone saw as 35 mm. The distance between the most medial point of the tibial cortex (Point M) and Point D1 in OWHTO and the most lateral point (Point L) and Point D1 in hybrid CWHTO were examined (dM-D1 and dL-D1, respectively). The location of Point D1 to the osteotomy line (%D1) was expressed as percentage, setting the start and end of the osteotomy line as 0% and 100%, respectively. To determine the safe angle for screw drilling in DTO, the angle between the line tangential to the medial cortex of the tibia and that passing through the center of the tibial tuberosity and PA were measured. Results: In OWHTO and hybrid CWHTO, the mean dPC-PA was 10.6 mm (6.9-16.5 mm) and 10.2 mm (7.3-15.4 mm), respectively. The mean dM-D1 in OWHTO was 25.9 mm (24.6-27.2 mm) and dL-D1 in hybrid CWHTO was 5.1 mm (2.9-7.4 mm). The mean %D1 was 47.6 ± 3.7% in OWHTO and 9.3 ± 4.1% in hybrid CWHTO, respectively. The minimal angle between the two lines in DTO was 35.2°. Conclusion: PAs could run within 10 mm from the posterior cortex in the osteotomy planes of HTO. Therefore, proper posterior protection is necessary when cutting posterior cortex. An angle of less than 35° against the medial cortex line would be safe for screw fixation to avoid vascular injury in DTO.

Parkinson’s disease is often complicated by psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatrists are caught in a dilemma between such symptoms and physical treatment since Parkinson’s disease sometimes shows treatment resistance based on pharmacological treatment-induced dopamine dysfunction. Here, we report on a 64-year-old woman with a 15-year history of Parkinson’s disease with stage IV severity based on the Hoehn and Yahr scale. She was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder with psychotic features. Unfortunately, her treatment course for depression was complicated by neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Because we were concerned about the persistence of her depressive symptoms, the risk of psychotropic drugs causing adverse effects, and progressive disuse syndrome, we administered modified electroconvulsive therapy. Her symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome and depression sufficiently improved after five sessions of modified electroconvulsive therapy. Additionally, the primary motor symptoms of her Parkinson’s disease also markedly improved. The improvement of neuroleptic malignant syndrome and her motor symptoms based on dopamine dysfunction can be explained by electroconvulsive therapy’s effectiveness in activating dopamine neurotransmission. Besides, the marked improvement of her depressive episode with psychotic features was presumed to involve dopamine receptor activation and regulation. Because advanced Parkinson’s disease can sometimes be refractory to treatment based on pharmacological treatment-induced dopamine dysfunction, psychiatrists often have difficulty treating psychiatric symptoms; electroconvulsive therapy may stabilize the dopaminergic system in such cases, presenting a possible non-pharmacologic treatment option for Parkinson’s disease.

Long term monotonous driving has often been found to decrease the driver’s arousal level and effect perception, cognition and judgment. In this study, seven kinds of scent were used as olfactory stimulation. The influence of scent on the driver’s psychosomatic state was examined using a fixed-based driving simulator by through biological measurements including electrocardiogram. Taste in scents is so individual that blood flow of brain activity is measured in order to estimate the reaction of scent on the subject. As for brain activity of olfactory cortex, the multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (MNIRS) has been shown to enable the evaluation of changes in hemodynamic. The MNIRS was also used to monitor the activity of the frontal cortex as mirrored by hemodynamic responses subjected to olfactory stimulation. The experiments were executed for several female and male subjects. The difference of reaction by sex is also observed.
Optical anisotropy and surface morphology of InGaAs lattice-mismatched with GaAs(0 0 1)

We investigated surface morphology and optical anisotropy of strained InGaAs lms grown on GaAs(001) substrate usingatomic force microscopy (AFM) and reectance dierence/reectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RDS/RAS). High temperature(HT)-grown samples were found to have a rippled surface structure, however for lms grown using a low temperature (LT) growthtechnique, the surface morphology was signicantly improved, without the ripple structure seen on the HT samples. Furthermore,ex situ RD spectra of LT-grown samples showed notable peaks near the critical energies of band structure originated from bulkelectronic transitions.
Valsalva Aneurysm Filled with Thrombi Mimicking a Cardiac Tumor

A Valsalva aneurysm filled with thrombi can be difficult to diagnose, because it mimics a cardiac tumor. Both cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) were performed on a patient who showed a low-echoic mass located between the atrial septum and the non-coronary sinus. Based on MRI findings allowing tissue characterization and the accurate location of the mass and the TEE findings of an irregular surface of the mass and a partial defect in the edge of the non-coronary sinus, we diagnosed the mass as a thrombosed Valsalva aneurysm that had perforated the inter-atrial septum. The operative findings coincided with the preoperative di-agnosis. Both MRI and TEE are useful for diagnosing this condition.
