Experimental Tests on Extended End-Plate Connections with Variable Parameters

Mahmood Md Tahir1,Md Azman Hussein 한국강구조학회 2008 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.8 No.4

Typically, steel frames are designed either using the approach of pin joint for simple construction or rigid joint for continuous construction. However, in actual situation most of connections are classified as semi-rigid joint or partial strength which has been recognised and encouraged by Eurocode 3 in semi-continuous construction. Eight experimental tests have been carried out for extended end-plate connections consist of variable parameters such as size and thickness of end-plate, size and number of bolts, size of columns, and beams. The tests were set-up using local hot-rolled steel sections known as Perwaja sections for both beams and columns instead of typical British sections. Geometric parameters such as the thickness of end-plate, the number and size of bolts and the use of deeper beam have contributed significantly to the increase in moment resistance and stiffness of the connections. The study concluded that all the tested extended end-plate connections are eligible to be classified as partial strength connections and the results of maximum moment resistance showed good agreement between experimental and predicted component method in most cases.

Stock Market Response to Terrorist Attacks: An Event Study Approach

TAHIR, Safdar Husain,TAHIR, Furqan,SYED, Nausheen,AHMAD, Gulzar,ULLAH, Muhammad Rizwan Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.9

The purpose of this research study is to examine the stock market's response to terrorist attacks. The study uses data of terrorist attacks in different parts of the country (Pakistan) from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2017. The event window procedure applies to a 16-day window in which 5 days before and 10 days after the attack. In addition, several event windows have been built to test the response of the Pakistan Stock Exchange. KSE-100 index is taken as proxy of response. The total terrorist attacks are classified into four categories: attacks on law enforcement agencies, attacks on civilians, attacks on special places and attacks on politicians, government employees and bureaucrats. The standard market model is used to estimate the abnormal return of the Pakistan Stock Exchange, which takes 252 business days each year. Furthermore, BMP test is used to check statistical significance of cumulative abnormal rate of return (CAAR). The results of this study reveal that total number of terrorist attacks and attacks on law enforcement agencies show long-term effects on Pakistan stock exchange. However, attacks on civilians, attacks on special places and attacks on politicians, government employees and bureaucrats have little effect on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

Privacy-preserving COVID-19 Contact Tracing using Blockchain

        Shahzaib Tahir,Hasan Tahir,Ali Sajjad,Muttukrishnan Rajarajan,Fawad Khan 한국통신학회 2021 Journal of communications and networks Vol.23 No.5

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has causedwidespread panic and global initiatives are geared towards treatmentand limiting its spread. With technological advancements, several mechanisms and mobile applications have been developedthat attempt to trace the physical contact made by a personwith someone who has been tested COVID-19 positive. Whiledesigning these apps, user’s privacy has been an afterthoughtand has resulted in mass violations of privacy of the public andthe patients. A total of 32 countries have designed apps andrely on them as a strategy to flatten the pandemic curve. Alongwith lack of privacy, these methodologies are centralized, wherethey are fully controlled by the government and the healthcareproviders. Owing to these and many other concerns, peopleare hesitant in the adoption of these technologies. This paperpresents a detailed analysis of user tracking apps belongingto 32 countries, thus demonstrating that they collect personaldata and are a gross violation of user privacy. This paperpresents a novel architecture for the efficient, effective andprivacy-preserving contact tracing of COVID-19 patients usingblockchain. The proposed architecture preserves the privacy ofindividuals and their contact history by encrypting all the dataspecific to an individual using a privacy-preserving Homomorphicencryption scheme and storing it on a permissioned blockchainnetwork. The contacts made with a COVID-19 positive patientare identified by performing search queries directly over theHomomorphic encrypted data stored in the blocks. Therefore, only those contacts that are suspected to be COVID-19 positivemay be decrypted by the healthcare professional or governmentfor further contact tracing/ diagnosis and COVID-19 testing;thereby leading to enhanced privacy.

An Efficient Rif Algorithm for the Classification of Kantowski-Sachs Spacetimes via Conformal Vector Fields

Tahir Hussain,Uzma Nasib,Fawad Khan,Muhammad Farhan 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.76 No.4

In this paper, we classify the Kantowski-Sachs spacetimes via conformal vector fields (CVFs). A Maple algorithm using the `Exterior' package is used to reduce the set of conformal Killing equations to the reduced involutive form (Rif). The algorithm yields a tree, known as the Rif tree, where the branches of the Rif tree give the potential metrics for which the spacetimes under consideration may possess proper CVFs. The set of conformal Killing equations is solved for all the branches of the Rif tree to obtain the explicit forms of CVFs. Some physical implications of the obtained metrics are also discussed.

Do Board Traits Influence Firms' Dividend Payout Policy? Evidence from Malaysia

TAHIR, Hussain,RAHMAN, Mahfuzur,MASRI, Ridzuan Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.3

The study aims to investigate factors that determine dividend payout policy using 336 non-financial firm year observations covering the period 2005 to 2016 in Malaysia. We found a significant positive relationship between corporate board size, board members average age, board tenure and dividend payout policy. We also found a strong negative effect and statistically insignificant relationship of board diversity, board independence, CEO duality and dividend payout policy. Additional, financial leverage has a negative effect on dividend payout policy. It is also noticed that firms with diverse boards are more likely to pay dividends and tend to pay larger dividends than those with non-diverse boards. Our results suggest that board diversity has a significant impact on dividend payout policy. Impact of board diversity on dividend payout policy is particularly conspicuous for firms with potentially greater agency problems. Our findings are consistent with the argument that corporate board traits enhancement positively affect the dividend payout policy which is beneficial for shareholders. This study offers useful insights into the current global debate on board traits and its implications for firms. The dividend payout policy signals good news to investors. Corporate board traits and firm's financial decision are the factors that disrupt the dividend decision.

Differentiated transcriptional regulation before and after death in Indianmeal moth Plodia interpunctella

        Tahir Shafeeq,Arif Malik,Ahmad Zaheer,Kyeong-Yeoll Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2020 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.23 No.4

Genes differentially regulate transcription processes to maintain biological activities throughout the life of an organism. However, little is known about their fate after organismal death. The Indianmeal moth Plodia interpunctella is a global pest insect that infests stored and manufactured agricultural products. We examined the changes in mRNA levels of nine genes associated with development, stress, and host defense mechanisms before and after death in P. interpunctella adults using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR. The results revealed that the transcription rates among genes were not consistent in relation to death. The mRNA levels of hsp25, hsp70, grp78, hsp90, EcR, USP, ProPO, and Tpx gradually increased until the time of death and remained high for at least 5 days. However, βgrp level continuously declined at the time of death. Our results showed that transcriptional activity was maintained after death, which suggests the presence of cellular responses during the post-mortem period.

Efficient excitation and amplification of the surface plasmons

Tahir Iqbal 한국물리학회 2018 Current Applied Physics Vol.18 No.11

One dimensional (1D) grating has been fabricated (using focused ion beam) on 50 nm gold (Au) film deposited on higher refractive index Gallium phosphate (GaP) substrate. The sub-wavelength periodic metal nano structuring enable to couple photon to couple with the surface plasmons (SPs) excited by them. These grating devices provide the efficient control on the SPs which propagate on the interface of noble metal and dielectric whose frequency is dependent on the bulk electron plasma frequency of the metal. For a fixed periodicity (Λ=700 nm) and slit width (w=100 nm) in the grating device, the efficiency of SPP excitation is about 40% compared to the transmission in the near-field. Efficient coupling of SPs with photon in dielectric provide field localisation on sub-wavelength scale which is needed in Heat Assisted Magnetic recording (HAMR) systems. The GaP is also used to emulate Vertical Cavity Surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in order to provide cheaper alternative of light source being used in HAMR technology. In order to understand the underlying physics, far-and near-field results has been compared with the modelling results which are obtained using COMSOL RF module. Apart from this, grating devices of smaller periodicity (Λ=280 nm) and slit width (w=22 nm) has been fabricated on GaP substrate which is photoluminescence material to observe amplified spontaneous emission of the SPs at wavelength of 805 nm when the grating device was excited with 532 nm laser light. This observation is unique and can have direct application in light emitting diodes (LEDs).
