We have developed a vaccine, which is designed to induce tumor-associated antigen (TAA)-specific T cells and antibodies in the setting of profound lymphopenia induced by myeloablative therapy and T-cell-depleted bone marrow transplantation. Test mice were injected subcutaneously (sc) with the 32DP210Bcr-Abl cell line, which is positive for the p210Bcr-Abl protein (Group 1). In Group 2, 7 days after injection of the 32DP210Bcr-Abl positive cell line, the mice received 900 cGy total body irradiation (TBI) followed in 1 h by the intravenous infusion of 10 million T-cell-depleted syngeneic bone marrow cells (TCDBMT) (Group 2). The leukemia-bearing group received an intravenous injection of 10 million spleen cells (donor lymphocyte infusions) from unvaccinated (Group 3) and TAA/ecdCD40L-vaccinated (Group 4) syngeneic mice 3 days after completion of the TBI and TCDBMT. Groups 3 and 4 mice received three additional sc vaccinations at 7-day intervals with the TAA/ecdCD40L vaccine, in which the TAA was taken from the junctional peptide of the P210bcr-Abl protein. The survival of Groups 3 and 4 mice was significantly longer than that in Groups 1 and 2 mice. Vaccinated mice from Group 4, which developed complete responses, survived up to 350 days post-injection of the leukemia cells without any evidence of leukemia regrowth.

Biologically relevant monolayer and bilayer films often consist of micron-scale high viscosity domains in a continuous low viscosity matrix. Here we show that this morphology can cause the overall monolayer fluidity to vary by orders of magnitude over a limited range of monolayer compositions. Modeling the system as a two-dimensional suspension in analogy with classic three-dimensional suspensions of hard spheres in a liquid solvent explains the rheological data with no adjustable parameters. In monolayers with ordered, highly viscous domains dispersed in a continuous low viscosity matrix, the surface viscosity increases as a power law with the area fraction of viscous domains. Changing the phase of the continuous matrix from a disordered fluid phase to a more ordered, condensed phase dramatically changes the overall monolayer viscosity. Small changes in the domain density and/or continuous matrix composition can alter the monolayer viscosity by orders of magnitude.

A novel process for silicon on insulator(SOI) technology has been presented. Single crystal Si is grown by molecular beam epitaxy(MBF) on a porous silicon(PS) system consisting of two layers of PS with different microstructures. Subsequent lateral oxidation converts the structure to SOI wish excellent insulation property. Si islands with a width of 135㎛ and low doping concentration have been achieved.

A 2,656 bp fragment of chicken ghrelin gene was cloned and SNPs were detected by PCR-RFLP and Allele Specific PCR (ASP) in 12 Chinese indigenous chicken breeds and a commercial chicken population. The results showed that there were 23 base variations and an amino acid change (Gln->Arg) in cloned chicken ghrelin gene. Three SNPs were confirmed in 13 populations and associations between this gene and growth traits of Tibetan chicken (TC) and Recessive White chicken (RW) were investigated. The results of haplotype analysis revealed that 26 haplotype genotypes were composed of eight haplotypes. The results of x2 tests indicated that there were significant differences between genotypes or haplotype genotype frequencies in some of the breeds or sexes at 0.05 or 0.01 levels. The results of ANOVA revealed that there were significant differences between genotypes or haplotype genotypes on some growth traits of TC and RW chicken breeds at 0.05 or 0.01 levels. Multiple comparisons showed that there were significant associations between genotype CT at site 71 and some growth traits of two chicken breeds and between genotype AG at site 1,215 and body weight at 16 wk of two chicken breeds, and there was a significant association between haplotype genotype CAA/CAG and body weight and shank girth at 16 wk of two chicken breeds.

The accumulation of inbreeding and the loss of genetic diversity is a potential problem in the modern swine breeds in China. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the pedigrees of Chinese Duroc (CD), Landrace (CL) and Yorkshire (CY) swine to estimate the past and current rates of inbreeding, and to identify the main causes of genetic diversity loss. Pedigree files from CD, CL and CY containing, 4529, 16,776 and 22,600 records, respectively, were analyzed. Pedigree completeness indexes of the three breeds, accounting for one generation back, were 83.72, 93.93 and 93.59%, respectively. The estimated average annual inbreeding rates for CD, CL and CY in recent three years were 0.21, 0.19 and 0.13%, respectively. The estimated average percentage of genetic diversity loss within each breed in recent three years was about 8.92, 2.19, and 3.36%, respectively. The average relative proportion of genetic diversity loss due to unequal contributions of founders in CD, CL and CY was 69.09, 57.95 and 60.57%, and due to random genetic drift was 30.91, 42.05 and 39.43%, respectively. The estimated current effective population size for CD, CL and CY was 76, 117 and 202, respectively. Therefore, CD has been found to have lost considerable genetic diversity, demanding priority for optimizing the selection and mating to control future coancestry and inbreeding. Unequal contribution of founders was a major cause of genetic diversity loss in Chinese swine breeds and random genetic drift also showed substantial impact on the loss of diversity.

Background: The established recommendations and guidelines regarding ideal measurements for an attractive face are mostly based on data gathered among Caucasian population. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perception of 3-dimensional facial attractiveness and golden ratio, neoclassical canons, ‘ideal’ ratios and ‘ideal’ angles in Hong Kong Chinese. Methods: Thirty 3-D photographs (15 males and 15 females) were shown to 101 laypersons and 60 patients seeking orthognathic treatment. The photographs were rated based on a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 (very unattractive) to 100 (very attractive). Results: More than half of the measurements (42/77) in females and thirty-two measurements in males were found to be significantly different from the ideal target value (p < 0.05) upon the comparison of the attractive faces with golden ratio, neoclassical canons, ‘ideal’ ratios and ‘ideal’ angles. Meanwhile, correlation tests between VAS scores and the parameters detected significant results (p < 0.05) in only six ratios, eight angles, one neoclassical canon and one proportion. Conclusions: Despite several renowned ‘ideal’ parameters of attractive faces that have been recommended in the literature, only a few of them were found to be significantly correlated with attractive faces in Hong Kong Chinese.

Located at the important tumor suppressor locus, 3p22, PLCD1 encodes an enzyme that mediates regulatory signaling of energy metabolism, calcium homeostasis and intracellular movements. We identified PLCD1 as a downregulated gene in aerodigestive carcinomas through expression profiling and epigenetic characterization. We found that PLCD1 was expressed in all normal adult tissues but low or silenced in 84% (16/19) gastric cancer cell lines, well correlated with its CpG island (CGI) methylation status. Methylation was further detected in 62% (61/98) gastric primary tumors, but none of normal gastric mucosa tissues. PLCD1 methylation was significantly correlated with tumor high stage. Detailed methylation analysis of 37 CpG sites at the PLCD1 CGI by bisulfite genomic sequencing confirmed its methylation. PLCD1 silencing could be reversed by pharmacological demethylation with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine, indicating a direct epigenetic silencing. Ectopic expression of PLCD1 in silenced gastric tumor cells dramatically inhibited their clonogenicity and migration, possibly through downregulating MMP7 expression and hampering the reorganization of cytoskeleton through cofilin inactivation by phosphorylation. Thus, epigenetic inactivation of PLCD1 is common and tumor-specific in gastric cancer, and PLCD1 acts as a functional tumor suppressor involved in gastric carcinogenesis.Oncogene (2009) 28, 2466–2475; doi:10.1038/onc.2009.92; published online 18 May 2009

Materials are always the .rst power of our science and technology. In this paper, we explored he linear and nonlinear optical responses of silver/bismuth oxide composite thin .lms, with special mphasis on the relation between the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility and the metal omposition and metal particle size. The intrinsic optical properties of Ag:Bi2O3 composite .lms re revealed for the .rst time by our research. The maximum value of the third-order optical usceptibility A(3) was 4:1 £ 10¡10 esu, which occurred at a 35.7 % Ag concentration. With increasing nnealing temperature, the maximum value of A(3)observed was 2.1 £ 10¡9 esu, which occurred ter heat treatment at 600 ±C. We also studied the structure and the crystallinity of the samples by sing X-ray diraction and atomic force microscope techniques before and after annealing. Based on he femtosecond nanoswitch eect we revealed, the Ag:Bi2O3 composite materials have promising otential applications in next generation communication technology.

Due to the excellent characteristics and great affinity with the current CMOS process, resistive random access memory (RRAM) storage for next generation non-volatile memory applications has been investigated widely. In this contribution, we will present advances in the resistance switching characteristics of CuOx thin films. The Al/CuOx/Cu sandwiched structure fabricated by using the electro-chemical- planting and the oxygen plasma reactive ionic etching method presents reliable switching behaviors. The Al/CuOx/Cu device shows two resistance states, the high-resistance OFF state and the low-resistance ON state. Analyses of the current-voltage behaviors have been performed, and it is suggested that the switching occurs at the interface between the CuOx film and the top electrode. The localized anode/oxide film interface effect, combined with the conductive filament formation and rupture phenomenological model, is used to elucidate the switching process.
