A three-dimensional, porous collagen/chitosan complex sponge was prepared to closely simulate basic extracellular matrix (ECM) constitutes, collagen and glycosaminoglycan. The complex sponge was prepared by a lyophilization method and had the regular network with highly porous structure, suitable for cell adhesion and growth. The pores were well interconnected, and their distribution was fairly homogeneous. The complex sponge was crosslinked using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to increase its boilogical stability and enhance its mechanical properties. The crosslinking medium has a great effect on the inner structure of the sponge. The homogeneous, porous structure of the sponge was remarkably collapsed in an aqueous crosslinking medium. However, the morphology of the sponge remained almost intact in a water/ethanol mixture crosslinking milieu. Mechanical properties of the collagen/chitosan sponge were significantly enhanced by EDC-mediated crosslinking. The potential of the sponge as a scaffold for tissue engineering was investigated using a Chinese hamster ovary cell (CHO-K1) line.
Metal stain on monolithic zirconia restoration: A case report

In restorative treatment using fixed dental prostheses, dentists should select appropriate restoration material among various types of dental materials. The strength, marginal fit, esthetics, wear resistance, biocompatibility, and cost are important factors in the choice of restoration materials. The present case showed a surface stain on a monolithic zirconia restoration that was due to wear between the monolithic zirconia restoration and the base metal alloy restoration. This phenomenon was confirmed by surface roughness measurement and electron probe micro-analysis.

A discontinuous Percoll gradient was used to separate islets from the collagenase- treated mouse pancreas easily and rapidly. Since the osmolality of Percoll is very low, adjustment of its osmolality to 340 mOs/㎏ H^2O was essential for securing the optimal separation. A discontinuous gradient layering with Percoll solution of 1.09g, 1.07g, and 1.05g/㎖, respectively, when centrifuged at 800×g for 10 min, resulted in an optimal condition for separation and yielded a banding pattern with an even distribution of islet cells. No significant difference was observed in the morphological features between the Percoll-isolated and the manually-isolated islets. In conclusion, the discontinuous Percoll gradient can be effectively used to isolate the pancreatic islets from mice with four-fold higher efficiency compared to the handpicking method.

A full-length cDNA corresponding to ddOs319,previously isolated as a cold-responsive gene in the flowers by mRNA differential display (Plant Cell Rep 26:1097–1110, 2007), was obtained from the cold-treated flowers by reverse transcription and nested PCR. The cDNA encodes a putative class III peroxidase of 335 amino acids with 77–98% identity with rice peroxidases and named OsPOX1. To understand the regulation of OsPOX1 expression, a 1.8 kb promoter region of OsPOX1 was isolated and fused to β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene. Transgenic rice plants expressing POsPOX1-GUS showed minimal GUS activity in both shoots and roots at the vegetative stage. In the flowers at early young microspore stage, GUS activity was detected in the veins and anthers. Interestingly, at the later vacuolated pollen stage, the GUS activity was highly induced by cold stress, suggesting that OsPOX1 is a flower-preferential cold-responsive gene in rice.

Background: The Guideline Working Group of the Korean Society for Neuro-Oncology (KSNO) conducted the nationwide questionnaire survey for diverse queries facing to treat patients with brain tumor. As part III of the survey, the aim of this study is to evaluate the national patterns of clinical practice for patients with brain metastasis and primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Methods: A web-based survey was sent to all members of the KSNO by email. The survey included 7 questions of brain metastasis and 5 questions of PCNSL, focused on the management strategies in specific situations. All questions were developed by consensus of the Guideline Working Group. Results: In the survey about brain metastasis, respondents preferred surgical resection with adjuvant treatment for patients with a surgically accessible single brain metastatic lesion less than 3 cm in size without extracranial systemic lesions. However, most respondents considered radiosurgery for surgically inaccessible lesions. As the preferred treatment of multiple brain metastases according to the number of brain lesions, respondents tended to choose radiotherapy with increasing number of lesions Radiosurgery was mostly chosen for the brain metastases of less than or equal to 4. In the survey about PCNSL, a half of respondents choose high-dose methotrexate-based polychemotherapy as the first-line induction therapy for PCNSL. The consolidation and salvage therapy showed a little variation among respondents. For PCNSL patients with cerebrospinal fluid dissemination, intrathecal chemotherapy was most preferred. Conclusion: The survey demonstrates the prevailing clinical practice patterns for patients with brain metastasis and PCNSL among members of the KSNO. This information provides a point of reference for establishing a practical guideline in the management of brain metastasis and PCNSL.

<P>As interest in electric vehicles and mass energy storage systems continues to grow, Li-O<SUB>2</SUB> batteries are attracting much attention as a candidate for next-generation energy storage systems owing to their high energy density. However, safety problems related to the use of lithium metal anodes have hampered the commercialization of Li-O<SUB>2</SUB> batteries. Herein, we introduced a quasi-solid polymer electrolyte with excellent electrochemical, chemical, and thermal stabilities into Li-O<SUB>2</SUB> batteries. The ion-conducting QSPE was prepared by gelling a polymer network matrix consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, methacrylated tannic acid, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate, and nanofumed silica with a small amount of liquid electrolyte. The quasi-solid-state Li-O<SUB>2</SUB> cell consisted of a lithium powder anode, a quasi-solid polymer electrolyte, and a Pd<SUB>3</SUB>Co/multiwalled carbon nanotube cathode, which enhanced the electrochemical performance of the cell. This cell, which exhibited improved safety owing to the suppression of lithium dendrite growth, achieved a lifetime of 125 cycles at room temperature. These results show that the introduction of a quasi-solid electrolyte is a potentially new alternative for the commercialization of solid-state Li-O<SUB>2</SUB> batteries.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Economic Traits in Korean Native Chickens

Heritabilities and genetic correlations of economic traits were estimated with a multiple-trait animal model on 5 different strains of Korea Native Chickens (KNC): Red Brown (RB), Yellow Brown (YB), Gray Brown (GB), Black (B) and White (W). The data used for this study were collected from the Daejeon branch of the National Livestock Research Institute and included 11,233 performance records and 12,729 individual animals. DFREML and SAS BASE/STAT packages were used to estimate genetic parameters and descriptive statistics. The estimated heritabilities for strain RB, YB, GB, B and W, respectively, for age at 1st egg were 0.24, 0.27, 0.12, 0.32 and 0.18; for body weight at first egg were 0.39, 0.43, 0.38, 0.52 and 0.57; for body weight at age of 270 days were 0.43, 0.51, 0.30, 0.52 and 0.67; for egg weight at first egg were 0.08, 0.13, 0.07, 0.06 and 0.07; for egg weight at age of 270 days were 0.37, 0.43, 0.22, 0.34 and 0.41; and for number of eggs laid by age of 270 days were 0.24, 0.25, 0.37, 0.36 and 0.30. The genetic and phenotypic correlations were also estimated.

This paper proposes a practical nonlinear target tracking filter using high-resolution radar measurements with non-Gaussian distribution. To cope with the numerical instability and computational burden of the existing nonlinear filters, an adaptive sequential Gaussian sum approximation is used in designing a tracking filter. As an efficient way to restrain the mode inflation of the a posterior probability density function, the modes with the same measurement update history are merged at every time instant. Accordingly, the proposed filtering scheme is suitable for real-time implementation while maintaining satisfactory target tracking performance. Through simulations of a typical re-entry ballisitic target tracking scenario, the superior performance and computation efficiency of the suggested filter are demonstrated.
