Redeeming the Voice of African American Women in Wilson’s Plays

August Wilson’s plays are distinguished from their respective values of his Pittburgh Cycle. Preservation of oral tradition and historical reality represented in only African Americans’ experience of slavery indicates the importance and values of the blues music in his female characters. That is, music and tradition is inseparable in discoursing African Americans’ lives. In particular, Wilson’s emphasis on female characters are not outstanding in main stream studies on him. Among them, three plays are intertwined to present the aspects of the female characters’ roles. To deal with this theme three plays are selected as follows: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences and The Piano Lesson. Ma Rainey initiates African American’s intrinsic experience of conflicts and segregation from white Americans, to draw their own stories through the power of the blues. In The Piano Lesson, Wilson points out comparison between black and white through the visual image of a piano, which comprises black and white. These visual differences of color disclose literal racism and ethnocentrism at a superficial meaning. The process of acceptance that includes both black and white is seen through the piano playing. Visual effect is closely related to aesthetics of difference. Just as the colors of the piano keys do not mix and each exists respectively, their identity must also be a different color that exists in diversity. On top of that, it offers the most cogent illustrations of how music is adopted for female characterization, especially with use of the blues. In particular, female characters redeem their voices by singing their stories and playing their history through music. Therefore, redeeming their voices shows the meaning of their music and can make their history more vividly inscribed in their storytelling. In conclusion, Wilson speaks, delivers, and represents African American stories through women characters not male protagonists, especially by using their own music, the blues.

Spatial and Temporal Politics of Memories: Focusing on Shepard’s Fool for Love

Well-known for a prolific writer, Shepard won a variety of awards. Shepard’s theatrical techniques are particular and salient to investigate. The West is one of his recurring themes, which are focused on American identity, American-ness, American fathers’ masculinity as well. Sam Shepard as a successor to tradition of American plays embodies his peculiar realism on the stage, his theatrical techniques sums up representation of using real props, immediacy and transformation techniques. His Family Trilogy and Family Plays are representative ones to show his theatricalism. This study investigates Sam Shepard's Fool for Love, which belongs to his Family Plays. Its main focus is on spatial division and temporal reversal with a view of incestuous relationships between siblings. This stage has conscious and subconscious spaces which are revealed by dividing characters’ areas onstage. Among them, women's space seems relatively empty like the picture the Old Man pointed out. There certainly exists May, but there is no room for their mothers despite providing their father’s space. Moreover, the father figure shows authorities to cross the border between reality and fantasy. In particular, the Old Man’s utterance has control over Eddie. Memories of the characters onstage are connected to passage of time; especially to show the Old Man’s past duality. For that reason, Eddie and May are inseparably stuck in rhetorical topography of love. Therefore, their foolishness for love is about the Old Man’s dual life with his two families. Like a quote by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, “The proper response to love is to accept it. There is nothing to do.”

Translational Difficulties for Linguistic Features in Through the Looking-Glass

Lewis Carroll’s Alice series are filled with distinctive linguistic features such as wordplay and neologism. Two Korean translations of Looking-Glass are analyzed to compare how these devices could be translated. These translations seem to retain the content of the original, despite the difficulties. The translators applied literal translation in most cases, often with additional explanations or footnotes, regardless of the types of wordplay. Further translatability of wordplay was achieved by employing homonymy, homophony and paronymy. In conclusion, the Korean translations has shown that foreignization strategies for translating them are mainly adopted. Consequently, wordplay and neologism in these Korean Looking- Glasses can be easily identified as translations, and the translators’ visibility as well.

예비 생활체육 지도자의 실무능력 강화를 위한 교수·학습 과정안 개발 및 적용효과 분석

As the interest and participation in ‘sports for all’ increase, the importance of strengthening instructors’ competence in the area is also emphasized. The goal of this study is to develop an effective syllabus for large-sized, instructor-oriented classes in order to equip future leaders of students with practical abilities. To achieve this goal, this study developed a teaching method for instructors for sports for all, based on the ADDIE model for students of H Community College. In order to solve the problems found at the analysis stage, such as environmental issues and student needs, this study tried to improve the students’ practicum abilities and leadership competence. Another goal was to enhance self-efficacy in students so that they would have more confidence in playing the role of leaders. The syllabus development centers around TAI (Team Assisted Individualization), making the class more effective by strengthening instructors’ feedback and providing supplementary/in-depth materials online. The students were encouraged to create portfolios about the progress and results of the class so that they could reflect upon and evaluate themselves with respect to the class. The teaching method developed in this study was applied to a real class to analyze its effectiveness. This study found that the students showed an improvement in self-efficacy and leadership after the developed syllabus was applied in their classes. The students’ written evaluations of the class were positive, too. It is suggested that the newly developed syllabus could be used effectively in developing teaching models and improving the teaching methods of related classes. 생활체육에 대한 관심과 참여가 높아짐에 따라 지도자의 역량 개발에 대한 중요성이 강조되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 교수자 중심의 대규모 강의로 이루어지고 있는 수업을 효과적으로 운영 할 수 있는 교수·학습 과정안을 개발하여 예비 지도자인 학생들의 실무능력을 갖출 수 있도록 하는것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를위해 H전문대학 학생들을 대상으로 ADDIE개발 모형에 따라 생활체육 관련 교수·학습과정안을 개발하였다. 학습환경 및 학생요구 등 분석단계에서 도출된 문제점을 해결하기 위해 학생들의 전공 실기능력과 리더십 역량을 향상 시킬 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 자기 효능감을 높여 학생들이 좀 더 자신감을 가지고 지도자로서의 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 하였다. 교수·학습과정 안에서는 팀 보조 개별학습으로 학습자간 협력을 통한 문제해결을 가능하게 하고, 리더십을 발휘할 수있는 기회를 제공하며, 정확한 동작을 숙지함으로써 자기 효능감과 학습 동기유발 및 지속이 가능하도록 교수자의 피드백을 제공하고, 온라인 환경을 구축하여 수업시간 외 지속적인 보충·심화학습이이루어질 수 있도록 가상의 교실 공간을 제공하였다. 또한 포트폴리오를 개발하여 학습자의 성찰적사고와 자기평가를 할 수 있도록 하였다. 개발된 교수·학습 과정안은 실제수업에 적용하여 효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과 교수·학습과 정안 적용수업에서 학생들의 자기 효능감과 리더십 역량 이유의 하게 향상된것을 확인할 수있었다. 또한, 학생들의 수업에 대한 서술형 평가에서도 긍정적인 반응을 나타내었다. 본 연구결과는 관련 교과목의 교수·학습 과정안을 개발하고 수업 방법을 개선하는데 효과적으로 활용될 수 있을것으로 기대된다.

노자에 비춰진 트랜스휴머니즘

The Amazing Spider-man series, which filmed by Mark Webb, are somewhat different versions of previous Spiderman series. Among various Spiderman movies, these two Amazing series have something in common: transhumanism. In particular, transhumanism aims to produce enhanced bodies and elevated way of thinking. The most significant feature of transhumanism is ‘modifications’ for human body enhancement by combining diverse species together. In Amazing series, two different types of transhumans appear. First, Dr. Conners is transformed into a lizard-like figure; second, Max has power of electricity from an electrical eel. Both of them, however, have inferiority complexes owing to their appearance and lack of a body part. However, after being modified into transhuman bodies, they cannot overcome their personal barriers like others’ gazes and excessive desire to be more than transhumans. These two movies reveal a dark side of transhumanism and impossibility of overcoming endless human desires. Transhumanism can be one of solutions to present new types of next human generation but what is more worthy is that they should draw social consensus of their communities. Moreover, transhuman perspectives cannot always guarantee elevation of human mind and thinking despite having enhanced bodies. Therefore, transhuman society cannot provide a utopian society in which it is questionable that transhumans are better than humans.

19세기 남자의 결혼이야기 : 『오만과 편견』과 『어니스트 놀이』를 중심으로

19세기의 시대적 상황을 결혼이라는 주제에 입각해 살펴보는 것은 대체적으로 여성의 이야기로 경도되어 있었다. 하지만 결혼이야기는 마치 여성의 이야기로만 국한된 듯 남성의 결혼이야기는 극히 드물어서 남성에게 있어 결혼은 어떠한 양상으로 나타나고 있는가와 어떠한 의미로 해석할 수 있는가를 살펴보는 것은 흥미롭다. 이에 빅토리아 조의 결혼이야기를 대표한다고 볼 수 있는 제인 오스틴의 『오만과 편견』 과 오스카 와일드의 『어니스트 놀이』를 통해 남성의 결혼이야기는 어떻게 펼쳐지고 있는가를 살펴보는데 본 논문의 의의를 찾고자 한다. 특히 부르디외의 아비투스 개념을 도입해 젠트리 계층에게 있어 결혼이 갖는 의미를 여성뿐 아닌 남성에게는 어떠한 역할을 하는가를 분석해보았다. 이를 위해 다양한 등장인물을 살펴보았는데, 이상적인 남편감의 대명사라 할 수 있는 다아시의 경우 엘리자베스의 결혼관이 다른 여성과 다르다는 점이 다아시를 선택하는 시각을 갖게 하였고, 다아시를 중점적으로 살펴보면서 남성에게 놓인 결혼이라는 결정이 어떤 의미인가를 파악하고자 했다. 한편 『어니스트 놀이』의 경우는 상류층 남자들의 댄디에 대한 추구가 그 당시 시대상과 어떻게 작동하는가와 그들에게 있어 자신이 좋아하는 상대와 결혼한다는 것은 어떠한 자격을 요구당하는가를 보여준다. 그 당시의 남편감의 기준에 의거해 측정되고 있음에 대해 풍자하는 것은 이름을 어니스트로 요구하고 있다는 것으로, 잭과 알저논은 그 부분에서 자신들의 정체성을 구현함으로써 해결하게 된다. This study explores the characteristics of marriage in the 19th century. For this theme, Jane Austen`s Pride and Prejudice and Oscar Wilde`s The Importance of Being Earnest are chosen for analysis. In this paper, unlike general concern on women`s marriage during the period, the meaning of men`s marriage is focused since as a meta text men`s marriage has not been spotlighted so far. This narrative is inclined to be buried because women are centered on marriage issues. In reality women are deprived the right to own property so that they play roles as economic exchange values between men at that time. That means they women have concerned about marriage. To put this, men who would marry women have concerned about marriage. The function and social responsibility of marriage in men will be investigated to show the role and meaning of marriage. First of all, in Pride and Prejudice Fitzwilliam Darcy plays as a Mr. Right for Elizabeth who can choose her ideal husband according to her own independent way of thinking. In comparison with other marriage partners, Darcy shows what men should equip for marriage. Also he experienced various situations and overcame himself, to get married in the end. Second, Oscar Wilde`s The Importance of Being Earnest explores the reason why would-be husbands should have names of E(a)rnest as well as be E(a)rnest in the Victorian Era. For this they struggle to acquire the name Ernest by being baptized with themselves. In the process of marrying their women, they can find their genuine identities. In conclusion, in the Victorian Era, marriage is important for men as well as for women because men who cannot marry will not belong to their habitus, thus being classified as economically incompetent. Therefore, men`s marriage is as important as women`s in that men should live in accordance with their class and habitus.

가시오가피 추출물의 항산화활성 및 MG-63 조골세포 증식과 alkaline phosphatase 활성에 미치는 효과

본 연구에서는 가시오가피 추출물의 부위, 추출 용매, 산 가수 분해 전처리에 따른 항산화 활성을 알아보고자 FRAP assay를 실시하였으며, 총 페놀 함량을 측정하고, 가시오가피 추출물의 항산화 활성과 총 페놀 함량간의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 또한 가시오가피 추출물 처리가 조골세포 증식률과 alkaline phosphatase 활성에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 가시오가피의 골다공증 예방 가능성을 규명하고자 하였다. 연구결과 가시오가피에 함유된 총 페놀 함량과 FRAP법으로 측정된 항산화 활성 간에 양의 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났으므로, 가시오가피의 항산화 활성은 함유된 폴리페놀에 의해 나타나는 것으로 풀이된다. 그러나 가시오가피에 함유된 폴리페놀 함량과 항산화 활성은 가시오가피의 부위와 추출 용매 및 산 처리 여부에 따라 차이가 나는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 가시오가피의 에탄올 추출물이 물 추출물에 비하여 조골세포 증식을 유의적으로 증가시켜주는 것으로 나타났다. 가시오가피의 물 추출물은 조골세포에서 염기성 인산 분해 효소의 활성을 유의적으로 증가 시켰다. 이는 가시오가피의 부위와 추출 용매 및 전처리 과정에 따라 추출되는 활성 성분의 종류와 양에 차이가 있기 때문으로 풀이된다. 이 결과는 가시오가피의 가공법을 선정하는데 고려 되어야 할 중요한 사항으로 사료된다. 본 연구를 통하여 가시오가피의 항산화 활성과 조골세포 증식 효과가 제시되었다. 한국산 가시오가피를 건강 기능 식품 소재로 개발하기 위해서는 동물 실험과 인체 시험을 통한 심도 있는 연구가 수행되어야 할 것이다. Acanthopanax senticosus is a common Asian herb also known as “Siberian Ginseng”. It is often used as a traditional herbal medicine for reducing damage in the liver, kidney, bone and muscle. In the present study we investigated the ferric reducing/antioxidant power and total phenolic contents of the ethanol-/water-extracts obtained from the stems and leaves of Acanthopanax senticosus. Osteoblast cellular proliferation was evaluated using the MTT and alkaline phosphatase activity assays in the human osteoblast-like MG-63 cell line. Acanthopanax senticosus extracts exerted remarkable ferric reducing/antioxidant power and contained high amount of phenolics. Among the extracts the stem-/ethanol-extract showed the highest antioxidant activity and total phenol content. Interestingly a highly positive correlation was found between antioxidant activity and total phenol content (p<0.01). Proliferation of MG-63 osteoblast cells was highest in the stem-/ ethanol-extract and alkaline phosphatase activity significantly increased in the water-extract of the stems (p<0.05). These findings suggest that Acanthopanax senticosus extracts have antioxidant activity for preventing oxidative stress-related diseases and may have beneficial effects on bone health through the proliferation of osteoblast cells.

성장과 운명의 노래: 영화 <라푼젤>과 <메리다>의 비교

이 연구는 모녀관계를 해석하는 방법론에 관한 연구로 아동의 성장과 엄마의 역할에 대한 논의를 위해 분석대상으로 <라푼젤>과 <메리다>를 선택했다. 제목에 드러난 것처럼 엄마는 딸의 성장과정에 어떠한 갈등 요소로 기능하고 작용하는가를 살펴보는 것이 본 연구의 핵심적인 부분이다. 더불어 엄마와의 갈등관계를 극복해가는 과정에서 딸의 성장은 어떤 식으로 이루어지는가와 그들이 찾아가는 자신의 모습은 어떠한 방식으로 구현되는가에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 이 지점에서 엄마의 역할이 크게 작용하고 있다는 점에 착안해 연구의 실마리를 끄집어내었다. 많은 아동문학작품에 투영된 엄마와 딸의 관계 중에서 특히 엄마의 역할과 엄마의 자리를 대신한 마녀에 대한 논의는 많이 찾아보기 힘들다. 아동문학에서 아동의 여정은 성장을 위해 가족을 떠나는 것, 환상 공간을 경험하는 것 등이 주된 부분이었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 흥미로운 점은 <라푼젤>에 나타난 모녀관계를 살펴보는 것은 어머니 역할을 해온 마녀에 대한 논의를 이끌어낸다는 점에서 특별함이 있다. 엄마인 마녀와 라푼젤의 관계를 살펴보는 것은 딸의 역할과 엄마의 역할이 어떻게 다른가를 보여주는 것이기도 하고, 특히 가짜였다 해도 사회학적 엄마가 마녀였다는 점에서 특이점을 발견할 수 있다. 또한 <메리다>의 경우 엄마와의 갈등은 딸에게 주지시키고자 하는 신분적 덕목으로 인한 것이었으나, 중요한 사건을 겪어내면서 엄마와의 갈등을 극복하고 자신의 운명을 용기 있게 들여다 볼 때 성장의 단계를 밟는 모습을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 딸의 성장과 관련해 엄마의 역할이 어떤 식으로 구현되고 있는가에 대해 논하고자 한다. 이를 위해 두 편의 영화, <라푼젤>과 <메리다>를 비교 분석함으로써 아동의 성장에 미치는 엄마의 영향에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 엄마의 역할에 대한 논의 중에서 통제와 간섭이 딸의 성장에 미치는 영향이 어떠한 것인지에 대해 살펴보았다. Walt Disney’s animation movies are well-known to present a lot of fun and lessons. Among them, Tangled and The Brave have something in common: relationship between mother & daughter. Many of the relationships between mother and daughter projected into children's literary works, especially the role of the mother and the mother's supplement including witches are not much to be discussed. This also shows an inevitable conflict between them which functions as a force to drive each movie. It is no exaggeration to say that the child's journey in children's literature was to leave their family and experience fantasy space for genuine growth. In Tangled, the witch functions as a mother’s supplement. It is interesting to note that looking at the witch’s role as a mother should be dealt with in it. In this study, we will discuss how mother's role affects daughter's growth. To this end, mothers’ influence on their children’s growth is examined. In particular, how mothers’ control and intervention affects on the growth of their daughters is discussed.
