        Teacher characteristics for success in the classroom: Chinese principals’ perceptions for hiring decisions

        Two research questions guided this study of teacher selection: (a) What characteristics do Chinese principals look for when hiring teachers? And (b) what is the effect of participants’ gender, experience, or school location on perceived characteristics of effective teacher candidates in hiring? Both interviews and a questionnaire survey were used to collect data from a southwest city of Shandong Province, China. In this mixed design study, quantitative results were consistent with the qualitative results. Additionally, the study results are intended to help readers better understand school principals’ perceived characteristics of effective teachers in a Chinese context and provides a framework for future comparative research between China and the USA.

        Principals’ perceptions of effective teaching: A survey of Chinese school principals

        Principals’ beliefs of effective teaching presumably shape their efforts to recruit teachers, evaluate teaching quality, support teachers to develop their teaching practices, and nurture the professional environment that promotes high the teaching quality in their schools. Drawing on survey data from 314 Chinese principals, this study examines principals’ perceptions of effective teaching and compares them with those of Chinese teachers and U.S. school principals in the literature. The study found that Chinese principals believed effective teaching practices to be those that align lesson plans with student learning styles, engage students actively in the learning process, offer clear, specific, and timely feedback, treat all students with respect, and maintain a physical and emotional safe environment for learning. These ideas are consistent with Chinese teachers’ perceptions about effective teaching but are clearly differentiated from those of U.S. principals. These perceptions were varied as participants had different years of administrative experiences, worked in urban or rural schools, and in schools with different levels of student performance.

        Experimental Study on the Diffusion Law of Horizontal Grouting in Shallow Sand Gravel Layer

        Common problems in horizontal grouting engineering projects that it is difficult to evaluate thegrouting slurry diffusion range due to theoretical limitations. Here we report a novelexperimental design that investigates the influence of grouting parameters (grouting time,pressure, slurry water-cement ratio) and permeability coefficient on grouting slurry diffusion inorder to determine the diffusion law of horizontal grouting in shallow sand gravel layer. Theresults indicate that grouting pressure is sensitive to the most significant impact on the slurrydiffusion radius, and the following rank is grouting time > slurry water-cement ratio >permeability coefficient of the stratum. Next, discrete element software was employed forsingle-factor analysis. Finally, a numerical model of shield tunnel settlement was developed toevaluate the impact of grouting reinforcement on ground settlement. The findings reveal thatthe slurry diffusion exhibits a non-standard columnar shape with horizontal symmetry, whilethe permeability coefficient of the sand and gravel influences vertical diffusion.

        The influences of teachers’ perceptions of using student achievement data in evaluation and their self-efficacy on job satisfaction: evidence from China

        This study employed survey research in China to investigate the relationships among teacher evaluation, teacher self-efficacy, and teacher job satisfaction, while controlling for demographic variables. Four hundred and twenty-five teachers from a medium-sized city in Heilongjiang Province participated. The study examined the teachers’ perceptions regarding using student achievement data in evaluation, finding mixed views about the inclusion of student scores, consistent with many recent studies on teacher evaluation reforms. Principal component analysis was conducted on the perception data and three factors emerged. The three factors were used in hierarchical multiple regression analyses and, in addition, three variables of teacher self-efficacy (i.e., efficacy for student engagement, efficacy for instructional strategies, and efficacy for classroom management) also were included in the analyses. The analyses found that (a) teachers’ perceptions of their evaluation have a significant explanatory power on their job satisfaction, and (b) when their perceptions of evaluation are controlled, teachers’ self-efficacy can explain additional variance in teachers’ job satisfaction. Specifically, teachers’ self-efficacy for student engagement was significantly predictive. Implications for educational policymakers and practitioners in light of enhancing teacher job satisfaction and developing rigorous teacher evaluation are discussed.

        Probabilistic fatigue-creep life reliability assessment of aircraft turbine disk

        Life consumption is one of the serious concerns for turbine disk performance and maintenance cost. The low cycle fatigue of turbine disk coming from the creep and their interaction has a direct influence on life and reliability of an aero engine. So, in this paper, the finite element analysis fatigue creep on Nickel base super alloy GH4133 turbine disk at 650 °C is computed based on the material properties, load and performance parameter of the low cycle fatigue as a random factor. The LCF Manson coffin model for cycles to failure (N f ) and Larson Miller (N c ) are calculated. Damage fraction summation is used to calculate the low cycle fatigue creep life and fitted by two parameter Weibull distribution. Therefore, Monte Carlo simulation is used in random sampling from two parameter Weibull distribution to estimate the reliability assessment of turbine disk.

        Attenuating Sevoflurane-induced Cellular Injury of Human Peripheral Lymphocytes by Propofol in a Concentration-dependent Manner

        Sevoflurane, one of the most commonly used inhalation anesthetics, induces apoptosis and oxidative stress in lymphocytes. Propofol, an intravenous anesthetic, exhibits antiapoptotic and antioxidative activities. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether propofol attenuates sevoflurane-induced cellular injury in human peripheral lymphocytes. Lymphocytes harvested from healthy volunteers were assigned to treatments with different concentrations of propofol, or 8% sevoflurane, or their combination. Propofol at concentrations of 5, 10 or 25 μg/mL had little effect, but 50 μg/mL propofol or 8% sevoflurane significantly reduced cell viability and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), and increased cell apoptosis, activation of caspase-3 and the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, compared with untreated cells. Five and ten μg/mL propofol attenuated the impact of sevoflurane on cell viability, apoptosis and ΔΨm, and 5, 10 and 25 μg/mL propofol inhibited the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species stimulated by sevoflurane. However, a combination of 50 μg/mL propofol and 8% sevoflurane led to more severe cellular injury than sevoflurane alone. The results suggest that propofol can attenuate sevoflurane-induced cellular injury of human peripheral lymphocytes in a concentration-dependent manner, providing a rational for the clinical use of sevoflurane combined with appropriate doses of propofol.

        Whole-genome sequence association study identifies cyclin dependent kinase 8 as a key gene for the number of mummified piglets

        Objective: Pigs, an ideal biomedical model for human diseases, suffer from about 50% early embryonic and fetal death, a major cause of fertility loss worldwide. However, identifying the causal variant remains a huge challenge. This study aimed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and candidate genes for the number of mummified (NM) piglets using the imputed whole-genome sequence (WGS) and validate the potential candidate genes. Methods: The imputed WGS was introduced from genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) using a multi-breed reference population. We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for NM piglets at birth from a Landrace pig populatiGWAS peak located on SSC11: 0.10 to 7.11 Mbp (Top SNP, SSC11:1,889,658 bp; p = 9.98E-13) was identified in cyclin dependent kinase on. A total of 300 Landrace pigs were genotyped by GBS. The whole-genome variants were imputed, and 4,252,858 SNPs were obtained. Various molecular experiments were conducted to determine how the genes affected NM in pigs. Results: A strong GWAS peak located on SSC11: 0.10 to 7.11 Mbp (Top SNP, SSC11:1,889,658 bp; p = 9.98E-13) was identified in cyclin dependent kinase 8 (CDK8) gene, which plays a crucial role in embryonic retardation and lethality. Based on the molecular experiments, we found that Y-box binding protein 1 (YBX1) was a crucial transcription factor for CDK8, which mediated the effect of CDK8 in the proliferation of porcine ovarian granulosa cells via transforming growth factor beta/small mother against decapentaplegic signaling pathway, and, as a consequence, affected embryo quality, indicating that this pathway may be contributing to mummified fetal in pigs. Conclusion: A powerful imputation-based association study was performed to identify genes associated with NM in pigs. CDK8 was suggested as a functional gene for the proliferation of porcine ovarian granulosa cells, but further studies are required to determine causative mutations and the effect of loci on NM in pigs.
