Fast suction-grasp-difficulty estimation for high throughput plastic-waste sorting

The selection of the grasping location is the most important task for robots that handle randomly shaped objects. In previous studies, the grasp quality was accurately evaluated, but the speed was much too low for high-throughput applications, and the focus was mainly on industrial products. In this study, a large-scale dataset for randomly deformed plastics is constructed. We propose a contact-area estimation model and difficulty function for a quantitative analysis of surface conditions. Synthetic labels were calculated using the tuned difficulty function for donut-shaped contact areas. We trained the network containing a pretrained encoder and decoder with skip connections for grasp-difficulty map estimation. Graspdifficulty estimations for multiple objects required at most 30.9 ms with an average error rate of 1.65 %. The algorithm had a 94.4 % grasping success rate and its computational efficiency was compared with that in previous studies. The algorithm enables the rapid sorting of continuously conveyed objects with higher throughput.

Pollution from discarded plastic has become a serious environmental problem. The Great Pacific garbage patch consisting of abandoned plastics is killing marine life. In addition, micro-plastics decomposed by solar UV radiation and waves can accumulate in the human body. Recycling plastic is accordingly a critical element of waste management. As part of the solution to this problem, factory automation in recycling plants to handle more waste faster is essential. The amount of reproduced raw plastics is proportional to the inlet speed of the plastics waste stream into a recycling process line. Furthermore, the quality of recycled products with reproduced raw plastics depends on the sorting purity through the line. Thus, an automated system should be capable of real-time classification of the plastics category and rapid manipulation for removing selected plastics. We propose a real-time sorting system for mixed color plastics by applying a machine learning algorithm and a parallel manipulator with a vacuum suction pad. The learning data and picking test samples were collected from a municipal waste disposal site at RM corporation factory. This work shows the feasibility of real-time plastics recycling automation and a future development direction.
Phialocephala lagerbergii: A New Record from Crop Field Soil in Korea

A unrecorded hyphomycete species of Phialocephala was isolated for the first time during the investigation of fungal community in the soil samples collected from different regions of Korea. The fungal isolate was identified as Phialocephala lagerbergii, based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the ribosomal DNA sequence. In addition, cultural and micro-morphological features were described in detail.

Pseudeurotium bakeri KNU14-21 isolated from crop field soil is a previously unreported fungal species in Korea. This fungal species was identified through morphological and molecular characteristics. Based on the shape and size of conidia and conidiophores as well as the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA, the isolate was confirmed to be Pseudeurotium bakeri. This species has not been previously reported from Korea, and this is the first report of its incidence in Korea.

Mitophagy induction upon mitochondrial stress is critical for maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and cellular function. Here, we found that Mst1/2 (Stk3/4), key regulators of the Hippo pathway, are required for the induction of mitophagy under various mitochondrial stress conditions. Knockdown of Mst1/2 or pharmacological inhibition by XMU-MP-1 treatment led to impaired mitophagy induction upon CCCP and DFP treatment. Mechanistically, Mst1/2 induces mitophagy independently of the PINK1-Parkin pathway and the canonical Hippo pathway. Moreover, our results suggest the essential involvement of BNIP3 in Mst1/2-mediated mitophagy induction upon mitochondrial stress. Notably, Mst1/2 knockdown diminishes mitophagy induction, exacerbates mitochondrial dysfunction, and reduces cellular survival upon neurotoxic stress in both SH-SY5Y cells and Drosophila models. Conversely, Mst1 and Mst2 expression enhances mitophagy induction and cell survival. In addition, AAV-mediated Mst1 expression reduced the loss of TH-positive neurons, ameliorated behavioral deficits, and improved mitochondrial function in an MPTP-induced Parkinson’s disease mouse model. Our findings reveal the Mst1/2-BNIP3 regulatory axis as a novel mediator of mitophagy induction under conditions of mitochondrial stress and suggest that Mst1/2 play a pivotal role in maintaining mitochondrial function and neuronal viability in response to neurotoxic treatment.
Sleep-promoting effects and possible mechanism of a major marine polyphenol dieckol

We had previously demonstrated that phlorotannins enhance sleep in mice. Dieckol is a major phlorotannin constituent from the brown alga Ecklonia cava. Although phlorotannins are known to exert hypnotic effects, the sleep-promoting effect of dieckol has not yet been determined. We evaluated the effect of dieckol on sleep-wake state of mice by analyzing electroencephalograms (EEG) and electromyograms. Flumazenil, a GABAA-benzodiazepine (BZD) antagonist, was used to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the effects of dieckol on sleep. Dieckol shortened sleep latency and increased non-rapid eye movement sleep duration. Additionally, sleep quality was evaluated by analyzing the EEG power density, and dieckol was found to not affect sleep intensity while zolpidem was found to reduce it. Finally, we treated mice with dieckol in combination with flumazenil and found the latter to inhibit the sleep-promoting effect of dieckol, thereby indicating that dieckol exerts sleep-promoting effects by activating the GABAA-BZD receptor. These results implied that dieckol can be used as a promising herbal sleep aid with minimal side effects, unlike the existing hypnotics.
