■ Objectives The goal of this pilot study is to observe the change of stroke gait by auditory cue training. ■ Methods An intracranial hemorrhage patient was trained for 4 weeks. For the 1st consecutive 6days(the 1st week), the patient was trained to walk with auditory cue, what was called auditory cue gait training condition. For the 2nd consecutive 6days(the 2nd week), the patient was trained to walk naturally without auditory cue, what was called free gait training condition. For the 3rd consecutive 6days(the 3rd week), the patient was trained to walk under auditory cue gait training condition. For the 4th consecutive 6days(the 4th week), the patient was trained to walk under free gait training condition. We analyzed the gait using a treadmill gait analysis system 3 hours after the 6th gait training. ■ Results Auditory cue gait training showed effects on gait parameters, which were increasing walking velocity, step length, stride length, decreasing cadence, step time and stride time. ■ Conclusion Auditory cue gait training improved gait parameters of a stroke patient.

<P>Myrrh essential oil (MEO) is widely used as remedies for the different human ailment in different parts of the world. The misuse of this natural product in higher doses may lead to fever, inflammation, and liver and kidney problems. In this study, we performed the acute and subacute toxicity analysis of MEO in mice model after subcutaneous injection and evaluated the safe dose to prevent the possible risk and side effects. Initially (first phase study) higher dose of MEO (20, 40, and 80 <I>μ</I>L) was injected, and later in the second phase study lower dose of MEO (1, 5, and 10 <I>μ</I>L) was injected for three days in each group of mice. Blood samples were taken for the investigation of hematological parameters and activity of various enzymes. The liver, kidney, spleen, lungs, and heart were excised for histological study. The body weight and skin abnormalities were also evaluated. In the first phase study, the mice showed granuloma formation at the site of injection. The liver showed dilated sinusoids and enlarged central vein. In the spleen the distinction between red and white pulp was lost. The kidney showed the degeneration of glomerulus. The enzyme activity and body weight were also decreased by the higher dose. The WBC count also increased nearly by twofold. Pruritus and self-trauma were also evident. Later in the second phase study, the skin abnormalities (granuloma) and damage in the structure of tissue (in liver, spleen, and kidney) were absent along with no change in enzyme levels, blood parameters, and body weight compared to the control. The MEO was toxic to liver, spleen, and kidney in the higher doses. The safe volume of MEO useful for various studies in mice was evaluated. The safe use of MEO should be assured, it should not be misused, being considered as a natural remedy, and there should be awareness of its toxicity and side effects.</P>

<P>[Purpose] This study used electromyography to measure the effective treatment duration of interferential current therapy for muscle fatigue. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen healthy adult men volunteered to participate in the study (age: 24.2 ± 1.3 years; weight: 67.6 ± 4.92 kg; height: 176.4 ± 4.92 cm). All subjects performed 5 min of isometric back extension exercise to produce muscle fatigue, and were then treated with interferential current therapy for 15 min, with electromyography monitoring (treatment group). After sufficient rest, the exercise was repeated for 5 min and an electromyography signal was acquired for 15 min with no treatment (control group). [Results] In the treatment group, the median frequency shifted to a higher level; the root mean square decreased over time, and then maintained a minimum amplitude. However, there were few changes in the electromyography signal after exercise in the control group. [Conclusion] Electromyography signals can provide information about the effective duration for muscle fatigue treatment as well as the muscle characteristics during treatment. This study should be helpful for clinicians by demonstrating the appropriate duration of therapy for relief of muscle stiffness.</P>

The following study reviewed the walking patterns of stroke patients with hemiplegia, which is called hemiplegic gait of stroke patients. Focusing is given to the changes in the distance and temporal factors of walking, which is called spatiotemporal characteristics, throughout the walking cycle. First, we introduced the definitions of essential terms related to gait and its measure. Second, we reviewed the spatiotemporal characteristics of hemiplegic gait. A main issue was that hemiplegic gait showed significant deviations from normal healthy gait. Although hemiplegia is primarily associated with unilateral motor disorder, changes in almost all spatiotemporal parameters used to assess walking were evident on both the involved and uninvolved sides of the body. Last, we reviewed the changes of spatiotemporal parameters of hemiplegic gait according to the prognosis or status of stroke patients, which may help to give a specific intervention for rehabilitation of stroke.

■ Objectives The aim of this study is to look into the correlation between motor performance and displacement of center of pressure(CoP) in hemiplegic patients with cerebral stroke. ■ Methods We measured manual muscle test(MMT) as motor performance value and, anterior/posterior position(Ant./Post. position) and lateral symmetry of CoP as displacement of CoP values from 129 stroke patients. The gait analysis was carried out using treadmill gait analysis equipment. ■ Results In terms of motor performance, MMT of upper extremity negatively correlated with Ant/Post position of CoP, however, one of lower extremity did not. In addition, MMT of both extremities negatively correlated with lateral symmetry of CoP. ■ Conclusion Displacement of CoP was negatively correlated with hemiplegic patient's motor performance.
