울증(鬱證)환자에게 용서프로그램을 활용한 오지상승요법(五志相勝療法)을 시행하여 호전된 1례

Yuzheng(鬱證) comes from obstruction of qi by stress. The patient has depressed mood, irritable sign, chest discomfort, costal pain, angry state or some strange feeling on the throat. Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy is base on the theory of interrelation in five elements in oriental medicine. The contents of Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy include five subjugations of five emotions. Anxiety subjugates fear(思勝恐), fear subjugates joy(恐勝喜), joy subjugates pity(喜勝悲), pity subjugates anger(悲勝怒), and anger subjugates anxiety(怒勝思). Forgiveness program is a kind of psychological therapies to decrease the degree of anger and it is included in Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy. In this case, a female patient, 50 years old, who suffered from Yuzheng(鬱證) with chest discomfort, irritable sign, easily angry state, depressed mood, hot flush, insomnia. We used Oh-Ji-Sang-Seung(五志相勝) therapy besides herbal medication, acupuncture to her condition got improved. Therefore we reported it for the treatment.
National Program for Developing Biotech Crops in Korea

Global area of genetically modified crops (GM crops or biotech crops) continued to grow and reached 189.8 million hectares in 2017. Recently, a total of 24 countries approved GM crops for planting and an additional 43 countries formally imported biotech crops for food, feed, and processing, meaning that biotech crops are now commonly accepted in those countries. Although biotech crops should be one of key solutions for the challenge of the global food security which will be caused by population growth and climate change, it is real that there are still some debates to accept biotech crops in many countries including Korea. Because of that, safety assessment is an inevitable step for developing and commercializing GM crops. It is, therefore, very important to understand safety regulation. In addition to considering safety assessment, there are several critical points which we must consider before starting to produce GM crops such as target traits and their market values. In other words, passing safety regulation processing and proving market value should be considered first in the development of GM seeds. National Program for GM Crops (NCGC), one of the Next-Generation BioGreen 21 Programs organized by RDA in South Korea, was established in 2011 to develop biotech crops that will be used in the future to solve problems in our agriculture. To accomplish this mission, the NCGC carried out the exploration of useful functional genes, development of qualified events, and the safety assessment of developed events. This report will present the results of our research to develop useful biotech crops.

<P>Kainic acid (KA)-induced seizure induces the hippocampal cell death. There are reports that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is an important regulator of energy homeostasis of cells, has been proposed as apoptotic molecule. In this study, we investigated the altered expression of AMPK cascade in the hippocampus of mice during KA-induced hippocampal cell death. Mice were killed at 2, 6, 24 or 48 h after KA (30 mg/kg) injection. Histological evaluation of KA-treated hippocampus revealed hippocampal cell death first at 6 h and appearing prominently by 48 h after KA injection. Immunoreactivity of Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinasebeta (CaMKKbeta) was increased after KA treatment. In Western blot analysis, AMPK activation was increased 2 h after KA treatment. The proteins of downstream AMPK, including those of glucose transporter1 (GLUT1) and phosphorylation of Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (ACC) were increased in the hippocampus after KA treatment. These results indicate that sustained AMPK activation might be a mechanism by which KA-induced seizure causes hippocampal cell death of mice.</P>
Existence of optimal cooling conditions in the film blowing process

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The existence of optimal cooling conditions with respect to process stability has been experimentally found in film blowing, in a sharp contrast to other extensional deformation processes such as fiber spinning and film casting where maximum, not optimal, cooling always unequivocally enhances process stability. The same simulation model of film blowing of Hyun et al. [J.C. Hyun, H. Kim, J.S. Lee, H.-S. Song, H.W. Jung, Transient solutions of the dynamics in film blowing processes, J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., 121 (2004) 157–162] proven quite accurate in portraying the transient dynamic behavior of the film blowing as compared with experimental data, has been used in this study to carry out a linear stability analysis, which then clearly confirms the experimentally found optimal cooling conditions. These optimal cooling conditions in film blowing stemming from the multiplicity of steady states of the process thus make the strategies for stabilization and optimization of the process quite a challenging task in both industry and academia because of their common relevance to the important process productivity issue.</P>

<P>Methicillin-resistant <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> (MRSA) is a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality. In search of a natural products capable of inhibiting this multidrug resistant bacteria, we have investigated the antimicrobial activity of emodin (EM) isolated from <I>Rheum palmatum</I> L. (Polygonaceae) against 17 different strains of the bacterium. New antimicrobial activity was found using the paper disc diffusion method, agar dilution as well as checkerboard method. Against the 17 strains, the disc diffusion test was in the range of 18-30 mm, and the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of EM were in the range of 1.5-25 μg/mL. From those results we performed the checkerboard test to determine the synergism of EM in combination with ampicillin (AM) or oxacillin (OX) against all strains. The combined activity of EM and two antimicrobial agents (AM, OX) against all strains resulted in a fractional inhibitory concentrations index (FICI) ranging from 0.37-0.5 and from 0.37-0.75, respectively. The effect of EM with AM and OX was found to be synergistic or partially synergistic. We found that EM reduced the MICs of AM and OX. EM and in combination with AM or OX could lead to the development of new combination antibiotics against MRSA infection.</P>

In May 2011, five consecutive gastroenteritis outbreaks were reported at schools in Gyeonggi-do. Epidemiological inspection revealed that one food manufacture company provided 'Kimchi', a traditional Korean side-dish, to these five schools for catering services. Fecal specimens were collected from students and food-handlers to determine causative viral agents. Norovirus genogroup GI was detected from 58 samples out of total 239 specimens by reverse-transcription (RT)-PCR, whereas norovirus GII was found only from one sample. Epidemiological studies also revealed that the Kimchi was processed using groundwater in the food manufacture company. Four groundwater samples were collected from the company and around the area. Norovirus GI was detected from three samples. To determine the norovirus genotypes of positive specimens from clinical and groundwater samples, sequencing and phylogenetic analyses were performed. The genogroup GI from 58 clinical and three groundwater samples and the GII from one food-handler were identified as norovirus GI.3 and GII.18, respectively. Sequence alignment analysis with norovirus GI.3 isolates revealed that identity between clinical and groundwater samples was over than 99.1% in nucleotide level. In conclusion, norovirus GI.3-contaminated groundwater caused the gastroenteritis outbreaks of five schools, through Kimchi. This molecular epidemiological study was an important report in Korea that clearly identified all transmission routes of norovirus GI.3.
