The otter (Lutra lutra) in Korea is classified as a first grade endangered species and is managed under state control. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of the otter that inhabits the Changnyeong, Jinju, and Geoje areas in Gyeongsangnamdo, Korea using mtDNA and microsatellite (MS) markers. As a result of the analysis using the 676-bp D-loop sequence of mtDNA, six haplotypes were estimated from five single nucleotide polymorphisms. The genetic distance between the Jinju and Geoje areas was greater than distances within the areas, and the distance between Jinju and Geoje was especially clear. From the phylogenetic tree estimated using the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis by the MrBays program, two subgroups, one containing samples from Jinju and the other containing samples from the Changnyeong and Geoje areas were clearly identified. The result of a parsimonious median-joining network analysis also showed two clear subgroups, supporting the result of the phylogenetic analysis. On the other hand, in the consensus tree estimated using the genetic distances estimated from the genotypes of 13 MS markers, there were clear two subgroups, one containing samples from the Jinju, Geoje and Changnyeong areas and the other containing samples from only the Jinju area. The samples were not identically classified into each subgroup defined by mtDNA and MS markers. It could be inferred that the differential classification of samples by the two different marker systems was because of the different characteristics of the marker systems used, that is, the mtDNA was for detecting maternal lineage and the MS markers were for estimating autosomal genetic distances. Nonetheless, the results from the two marker systems showed that there has been a progressive genetic fixation according to the habitats of the otters. Further analyses using not only newly developed MS markers that will possess more analytical power but also the whole mtDNA are needed. Expansion of the phylogenetic analysis using otter samples collected from the major habitats in Korea should be helpful in scientifically and efficiently maintaining and preserving them.
Feed Forward Noise Suppression in Injection Seeded WDM-PON With ASE
Sang-Rok Moon,Joon-Young Kim,Chang-Hee Lee IEEE 2012 IEEE Photonics Technology Letters Vol.24 No.15

We propose a noise suppression method using a feed forward circuit for injection-seeded WDM-PON. The required injection power is reduced by 8 dB by employing the proposed method. We investigate the limiting factors by tracing the relative intensity noise in the injection-seeded WDM-PON. Interplay of two filtering effects determines the net suppression of noise.

CNC(cellulose nanocrystal) is a renewable and biodegradable reinforcing filler that gives impressive mechanical properties to filled polymer composites. However, further studies are required for its application because of its low dispersibility in nonpolar polymer matrix, which is one major drawback for the application of CNC as a high value-added additive, and its strong tendency for self-agglomeration by internal hydrogen bonding. To overcome these shortcomings, the surface of CNC was modified with silane coupling agent(aminoethyl-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane, AEAPTMS) and some characterizations were examined. AEAPTMS is a kind of silane coupling agent and is known as an additive that effectively improves the functionality and compatibility with the polymer matrix. By just silylating the CNC surface with silane aquatic solutions, the CNC surface can be modified in a more direct, convenient and environmentally-friendly manner without using any hazardous solvents. The surface modified CNCs were analyzed using various characterization instruments (field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, etc.) in comparison with MFC(microfibrillated cellulose) and pristine CNC materials. This study is expected to improve the applicability and value-added of CNC as a reinforcing filler for various polymer composites.
CFO compensation method using optical feedback path for coherent optical OFDM system
Moon, Sang-Rok,Hwang, In-Ki,Kang, Hun-Sik,Chang, Sun Hyok,Lee, Seung-Woo,Lee, Joon Ki Elsevier 2017 Optical fiber technology Vol.36 No.-

Abstract

We investigate feasibility of carrier frequency offset (CFO) compensation method using optical feedback path for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system. Recently proposed CFO compensation algorithms provide wide CFO estimation range in electrical domain. However, their practical compensation range is limited by sampling rate of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This limitation has not drawn attention, since the ADC sampling rate was high enough comparing to the data bandwidth and CFO in the wireless OFDM system. For CO-OFDM, the limitation is becoming visible because of increased data bandwidth, laser instability (i.e. large CFO) and insufficient ADC sampling rate owing to high cost. To solve the problem and extend practical CFO compensation range, we propose a CFO compensation method having optical feedback path. By adding simple wavelength control for local oscillator, the practical CFO compensation range can be extended to the sampling frequency range. The feasibility of the proposed method is experimentally investigated.

Highlights

For CO-OFDM system, the CFO compensation range is limited by sampling rate of ADC.

CFO compensation method using optical feedback path is proposed.

This technique can be applied if receiver bandwidth is limited.

This technique can be applied for all coherent modulation formats.

Feed Forward Noise Suppression for ASE-Seeded WDM Systems
Sang-Rok Moon,Sang-Hwa Yoo,Myeonggyun Kye,Chang-Hee Lee IEEE 2016 Journal of Lightwave Technology Vol.34 No.9

We investigate feed forward noise suppression for ASE-seeded WDM systems in relation to its limitations. In particular, limitation factors such as background ASE of reflective light sources and filtering effect are thoroughly investigated. We also measure the penalty induced by feed forward parameter variation from the designed value. Although the BER performance is improved by noise suppression, the statistical noise distribution change reduces the effectiveness of noise suppression.

Effect of Noise Distribution in a WDM System Seeded by a Spectrum-Sliced ASE
Sang-Rok Moon,Sang-Hwa Yoo,Chang-Hee Lee IEEE 2014 Journal of Lightwave Technology Vol.32 No.12

We investigate the impact of noise distribution on the bit error rate (BER) in a WDM system seeded by a spectrum sliced amplified spontaneous emission. The Gamma distribution of the intensity noise was considered for accurate estimation of transmission performance in a real system. The power penalty by the relative intensity noise and the extinction ratio (ER) were calculated to identify a suitable operation range. To consider the finite ER, numerical simulation was conducted. We also investigate change of the noise distribution after noise suppression and fiber transmission, and the effect on the BER by the distribution change.

Pulsed-ASE-seeded DWDM optical system with interferometric noise suppression.
Yoo, Sang-Hwa,Moon, Sang-Rok,Kye, Myeonggyun,Lee, Chang-Hee Optical Society of America 2014 Optics express Vol.22 No.7

We propose and demonstrate a 10-Gb/s dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) optical system based on a pulsed-seed-light source employing a fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (F-MZI) as an intensity noise suppressor. The transmission results show that the required injection power into a reflective modulator was as low as -18 dBm. The F-MZI can accommodate the polarized seed-light with superior noise characteristics so that the supported DWDM systems double using a single conventional unpolarized seed-light. In addition, an allowable length of the drop fiber is investigated to show the system flexibility.

Despite multimodal therapy, glioblastoma multiforme(GBM) is associated with a poor prognosis with a median survival of less than 1 year. GBM with long-term survival over 5 years is rare, and no definite markers of better prognosis have been identified till date. We present two patients who were diagnosed a frontal GBM and a cerebellar GBM respectively. Both patients were survived for more than 5 years, who had been treated with surgery, Novalis radiosurgery and chemotherapy. We also discussed prognostic factors who were long term survival with GBM.
