This paper gives a feminist reading of Suzanne Alexander in The Alexander Plays by focusing on her performances as active reconstitutions of history and memory. A compilation of four of Adrienne Kennedy’s more recent plays, The Alexander Plays revolves around a central protagonist who, behind windows and within the closed spaces of the home, waits for her missing husband to return home. Yet, the plot of the waiting wife seems to mask the hidden and more dangerous desires for political transgressions of the play. By analyzing Suzanne’s interaction with various literary and historical figures, memories and events, this paper argues that her seeming approval of domesticity, femininity and intimacy serves as a cover for her more political altercations with history, race and gender.
Statistical inference of acupoint specificity: forward and reverse inference
Ye-Chae Hwang,Ye-Seul Lee,Yeonhee Ryu,이인선,채윤병 한국한의학연구원 2020 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.9 No.1
Background: The acupoint specificity has been considered important issue in acupuncture research. In clinical aspects, it is essential to identify which acupoints are associated specifically with a particular disease. The present study aimed to identify the specificity of acupoint selection (forward inference) and the specificity of acupoint indication (reverse inference) from the online virtual diagnosis experiment. Methods: Eighty Korean Medicine doctors conducted the virtual medical diagnoses provided for 10 different case reports. For forward inference, the acupoints prescribed for each disease were quantified and the data were normalised among 30 frequently used acupoints using Z-scores. For reverse inference, diseases for each acupoint were quantified and the data were normalized among 10 disease using Z-scores. Results: Using forward inference we demonstrated the specificity of acupoint selection in each disease. Using reverse inference we identified the specificity of acupoint indication in each acupoint. In general, a certain acupoint can be selected specifically for a particular disease, and it has a specific indication for the disease. However, the specificity of acupoint indication and the specificity of acupoint selection are not always identical. Conclusions: The selection of an acupoint for a particular disease does not imply that the acupoint has specific indications for that disease. Inferring the specificity of acupoint indication from clinical observations should be considered.

An ultrathin and angularly stable metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) is demonstrated for VHF-band using four connected split-square resonators structure and low-cost fabrication process. The total incoming energy of electromagnetic wave (at 250 MHz) is consumed inside the efficient thickness, which is 240 times smaller than the absorption wavelength of MPA. Our MPA works well for a very wide range of incident angle up to 45 of electromagnetic wave and exhibits the polarization-independent behavior. Furthermore, by scaling the initial design and integrating a ferroelectric material (strontium titanate), a thermo-tunable ultrathin MPA is realized in the THz region. At room temperature (300 K), the thickness of THz MPA reaches roundly 1/300 of the working wavelength. In addition, a fractional frequency shift of 49% at the absorption over 90% can be controlled in the varied temperature range from 150 to 400 K. Our results presents good candidates for potential devices operating from the radio to the THz range.

Given continuous needs for a public duty of agriculture and rural area, an effort to improve nutrient management in agricultural sector is strongly required. As a measure to solve these problems, Korean government (MAFRA) introduced the promotion policy called as “Agro-Environment Conservation Program (AECP)” in 2018 and has expanded 5 projet sites in 2019 from 3 in 2018. The program has a variety of agricultural activity to conserve soil, water, air, ecology and landscape. Of those, the nutrient input activity which is one of sub-activities is closely involved in not only crop productivity but also water quality and air pollution. Therefore, in order to lead a soft landing of AECP, it is essential to evaluate the conservation effects in a scientific point of view. In this respect, we focused on evaluating the effect of recommended nutrient input activities, standard fertilization and soil test fertilization, on rice productivity and nitrogen balance. The effect of nutrient management which is explained by rice yield and nitrogen balance was estimated with the combination of soil characteristics and rice varieties. Rice yield by recommended fertilization was 654 kg per 10a, 6% lower than control, but there was no statistical significance. By contrast, nitrogen balance was 4.7 kg lower, which means great improvement, in the recommended than the control. Conclusively, the recommended fertilization like soil test fertilization is expected to be useful as a measure to reduce nutrient balance, to ensure crop productivity, and finally to perform a public role of agriculture.
InGaAs/GaAs quantum well intermixing using proton irradiation for non-absorbing mirror
Ye Seul Yun,SangHyeon Kim,Han-Youl Ryu,Min-Su Park,Hojin Jang,Jonghan Song,Weon Cheol Lim,Young Jun Chang,Won Jun Choi 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.9
We report a proton irradiation-induced intermixing on InGaAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) heterostructures with thick upper cladding layers. Proton irradiation was performed with different dose, followed with annealing. Proton irradiated and annealed sample shows the blue-shift of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the blue-shift energy was increased up to about 30 meV with increasing dose, but was insensitive to the annealing temperature. Finally, we calculated that the relative absorption coefficient at the laser wavelength for the irradiated sample with dose of 1 1016/cm2 was 0.045, suggesting such proton irradiation-induced intermixing is a promising approach for fabricating non-absorbing mirror.
Performance analysis of Teleoperation systems with different Haptic and Video time-delay
Ye -Seul Kim,Jee-Hwan Ryu 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8
Teleoperation is the extension of a person"s sensing and manipulation capability to a remote location. Whenteleoperation is performed over a great distance, a time delay is incurred in the transmission of information from oneside to another. So far, many researchers try to reduce the effect of time-delay in several ways. [1-3] Our novel concept is to find out a relationship between performance of system and a matrix of two independent delay with the system has two modalities(channels) which are video and haptic. Especially, we expected to be able to bear witness in the case has same two channels’ time-delay. There is no other previous work in general (only specific tele-surgery task [4]), till now. We proposed and achieved experiments to evaluate the performance with 10 subjects. Finally, result was different from we expected. When two channels’ delays are same, the performance was poorer. Haptic-delay had made the system unstable. Accordingly, we need to complement this effect in future work.
Estrogen activity of Silkworm (Bombyx mori) Pupa water extract and its fractions
Ryu, Jae-Sung,Jo, Gyeong-Jong,Jin, Jung-Woo,Yang, Hyo-Jung,Park, Yong-Il,Na, Ye-Seul,Nam, Kyung-Su,Keum, Kyung-Soo,Choo, Young-Kug Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2008 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.8 No.3
This study was conducted to evaluate the estrogen activity of silkworm (Bombyx mori) pupa extracts and their fractions. Powdered samples of freeze-dried silkworm pupa were extracted at room temperature (RT), $40^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$ in water (D.W), chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol for 6h and then filtered (0.45 um). The extracts were then freeze-dried. The estrogenic activity of these extracts was then investigated by competition binding assays using estrogen receptor ${\alpha}\;(ER{\alpha})$ and $ER{\beta}$, and by evaluating their effects on the proliferation of the human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7. Among the extracts evaluated, water extracts prepared at RT showed the highest binding affinity to $ER{\alpha}$ ($IC_{50}$, 1.76 ug/ml) and $ER{\beta}$ ($IC_{50}$, 0.07 ug/ml). In addition, MCF-7 cells that were treated with 62.5 ug/ml of the RT extract showed the greatest increase in proliferation (2-fold; 1291.79%) when compared to control cells (659.82%). Next, the water extract that was prepared at RT (sample 1) was dissolved in D.W. and further fractionated using a Dowex 50W - 8X ($H^+$) column. The flow-through and wash were then pooled together and freeze-dried (sample 2). The bound materials were then eluted with 20 mM NaCl, after which they were applied to a Dowex 1X2 - 200 ($Cl^-$) column and washed with D.W. to remove the sodium ions. The eluants were then freeze-dried (sample 3). Of these fractions, sample 2 showed the highest binding affinity to ER{\alpha} ($IC_{50}$, 1.44 ug/ml) and $ER{\beta}$ ($IC_{50}$, 1.18 ug/ml). In addition, MCF-7 cells that were treated with sample 2 (15.6 ug/ml) showed the largest increase in growth (1159.39%) when compared to control cells (525.26%). Taken together, these results suggest that the fraction of the RT water extract of silkworm pupa referred to as sample 2 may be useful as a phytoestrogen.
