<P>We present infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculation results for the protonated permethylated β-cyclodextrin (CD)–water non-covalent complex, the simplest β-CD non-covalent complex, in the gas-phase. The IRMPD spectrum in the region 2700–3750 cm<SUP>−1</SUP> consisted of three strong peaks at 3096, 3315, and 3490 cm<SUP>−1</SUP>. These spectral features in the experimental IRMPD spectrum were compared with a large set of infrared absorption spectra predicted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the protonated β-CD–water complex. Complex III (see Fig. 4c), in which the water molecule (at the primary rim) and the proton (at the secondary rim) were separated, was found to suitably reflect the main spectral characteristics found in the experimental IRMPD spectrum. The absence of the homodromic hydrogen bond ring, due to replacement of hydroxyl groups with methoxy groups in permethylated β-CD, rendered the primary rim open compared with the unmodified β-CD ‘one-gate-closed’ lowest energy conformer. 제주도 지하수 질산염 농도의 시·공간적 변화 특성: 장기(1993-2015) 모니터링 자료의 평가

1993년부터 2015년까지 관측된 제주도 지하수 장기모니터링 관측정(N = 4,835)에서 수집된 지하수 수질자료(N = 21,568)를 기반으로 질산성질소의 시공간적 변동 특성을 평가하였다. 제주도 지하수의 질산성질소 농도의 중앙값은 2.5 mg/L로서 다른 국가나 대륙의 조사 결과에 비해 다소 높거나 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 지하수 용도, 행정구역 및 고도 별로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 특히, 산간 지역에 비해 저지대 해안가에 위치한 농업 및 주거지역에서 농도가 높음을 확인하였다. Mann-Kendall 및 Sen’s slope 분석을 활용한 질산성질소 농도의 추세 분석 결과, 하류 저지 대에 비해 중산간지역에서의 질산성질소 농도 증가 경향이 뚜렷하였다. 제주도 내 토지 피복의 시계열 변화 특성과 결부 지어 보면, 중산간지역의 오염 증가 추세는 농업지역의 확장 등 인위적 활동 증가에 기인한 결과로 판단된다. 반면,기지정된 지하수자원특별관리구역에서는 전반적으로 질산성질소 농도의 감소 경향이 나타났는데, 이는 지하수 관리 측면에서 수질관리를 위한 적극적인 정책이 유효함을 시사한다. 본 연구에서는 제주도 지하수의 질산성질소 오염관리를 위한 적정 방안을 제안한다. The spatio-temporal variations of nitrate concentrations in groundwater of Jeju Island were evaluated by an analysis of time series groundwater quality data (N = 21,568) that were collected from regional groundwater monitoring (number of wells = 4,835) for up to 20 years between 1993 and 2015. The median concentration of NO 3 -N is 2.5 mg/L, which is slightly higher than those reported from regional surveys in other countries. Nitrate concentrations of groundwater in wells tend to significantly vary according to different water usage (of the well), administrative districts, and topographic elevations: nitrate level is higher in low-lying agricultural and residential areas than those in high mountainous areas. The Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen’s slope analysis show that nitrate concentration in mid-mountainous areas tends to increase, possibly due to the expansion of agricultural areas toward highland. On the other hand, nitrate concentrations in the Specially Designated Groundwater Quality Protection Zones show the temporally decreasing trend, which implies the efficiency of groundwater management actions in Jeju. Proper measures for sustainable groundwater quality management are suggested in this study.

<P>In this letter, we analyze the sum rate of random beamforming (RBF) for downlink multi-antenna systems in the presence of other cell interference (OCI). Employing extreme value theory, an expression of the asymptotic ergodic sum rate with a large number of users is derived from the limiting distribution of the sample maximum of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Based on our result, the scaling law of multiuser diversity gain is also exhibited in the context of RBF systems with the OCI, which is shown to coincide with the previous result without the other cell interferers. Simulation results verify the validity of our analysis even with not so large number of users.</P>

Background and aims: Sorafenib is the only approved treatment to advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its efficacy was relatively worse in the Asian-Pacific trial compared with the Global trial and clinical utility is limited by high cost. Several reports suggested survival benefit of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) in patients with advanced HCC with main portal vein invasion. This study is aimed to compare the efficacy of HAIC with sorafenib in HCC patients with main portal vein invasion. Methods: Patients of advanced HCC with main portal vein invasion who had received treatment between 2008 and 2012 at Korea University Medical Center were included. Sorafenib was initiated with 400 mg twice daily, and HAIC was performed with infusion of cisplantin 60mg/m2 for 1 day and 5-flurouracil 500mg/m2 for 3 days every 4 weeks. We evaluated overall survival (OS), time-to-progression (TTP), and disease control rate (DCR). Results: Seventy six patients were treated by sorafenib (n=37) or HAIC (n=39). Proportion of patients with Child-Pugh class A liver function (70% vs. 72%, P=1.000), ECOG performance status 0-1 (68% vs. 70%, p=0.431) and lymph node metastasis (41% vs. 36%, P=0.814) was not significantly different. Solid organ metastasis was more common in sorafenib group than HAIC group (46% vs. 7.7%, P<0.001). Median OS was 6.9 months and 11.1 months in sorafenib and HAIC group (P=0.100). TTP was 1.9 months (sorafenib) and 5.3 months (HAIC) (P<0.001). DCR was 34% (sorafenib) and 72% (HAIC) (P=0.006). In patients without solid organ metastasis, OS was 8.8 months (sorafenib) and 11.1 months (HAIC) (P=0.097). TTP was 1.9 months (sorafenib) and 6.0 months (HAIC) (P<0.001). DCR was 29% (sorafenib) and 76% (HAIC) (P=0.031). Conclusions: HAIC can be alternative treatment option for advanced HCC with main portal vein invasion, and could provide favorable disease control rate in those patients without solid organ metastasis.
Epidemiological Studies of Avian Paramyxovirus Type 4 and 6 in Commercial Chicken Flocks in Korea

Avian paramyxovirus (APMV) type 4 and 6 were isolated during an avian influenza (AI) surveillance program of wild birds. This study also conducted experimental infection of wild-bird-origin APMV type 4 and 6 in specific pathogen free (SPF) chickens to study pathogenicity and transmission within domestic flocks. In addition, serological prevalence data of APMV type 4 and 6 in domestic fowls was conducted with chicken sera collected from 2007 to 2009 in order to understand infection status. The results of the animal experiment showed that APMV type 4 and 6 had the ability to infect chickens with sero-conversion and to transmit the virus from infected birds to contacted birds, but showed low pathogenicity. Serological tests revealed that APMV type 4 was widespread in the poultry industry, especially in layer flocks, but the positive rate for APMV type 6 was very low. This study concluded that wild bird-origin APMV type 4 and 6 could infect the chickens by inter-species transmission and the seroprevalence of APMV type 4 was quite high in Korean poultry. However, since almost all the chicken flocks had a high level of antibody titer against APMV type 1, there was possibility of cross reaction between APMV type 1 and 4, which made the interpretations more complicated. In order to understand infection status in the natural environment, additional study is necessary regarding the seroprevalence of APMV type 4 and 6 in the wild bird population.

Acute interstitial nephritis induced by Solanum nigrum

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is an important cause of reversible acute kidney injury and pathologically characterized by inflammatory infiltrate in the renal interstitium. Solanum nigrum (S. nigrum) is a medicinal plant member of the Sol-anaceae family. Although S. nigrum has been traditionally used to treat various ailments such as pain, inflammation, and fever, it has also been reported to have a toxic effect, resulting in anticholinergic symptoms. However, there have been no reports of AIN caused by S. nigrum. Here, we report the first case of biopsy-confirmed AIN after ingestion of S. nigrum. A Study on Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir Welded and Electron Beam Welded AA2195 Sheets

<P>Aluminum-Copper-Lithium alloys are used as substitute for conventional aerospace Al alloys in cryogenic tank of liquid rocket engines, aircraft wing box and satellite systems due to their high specific modulus and specific strength. For this reason they are currently under consideration for one of the potential choices for a large structure of Korea Space Launch Vehicle. In this study, friction stir welding and electron beam welding were conducted on AA2195 sheets, in butt joint configuration in order to compare the two processes and to evaluate mechanical properties. The results provide valuable information for the optimal condition of joining AA2195 sheets for a large tankage structure of the space launcher.</P>
