<P>As an alternative to synthetic pesticides, natural materials such as plant extracts and microbes have been considered to control plant diseases. In this study, methanol extracts of 120 plants were explored for in vivo antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia triticina, and Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei. Of the 120 plant extracts, eight plant extracts exhibited a disease control efficacy of more than 90% against at least one of five plant diseases. In particular, a methanol extract of Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes exhibited strong activity against wheat leaf rust caused by P. triticina. When the C. zedoaria methanol extracts were partitioned with various solvents, the layers of n-hexane, methylene chloride, and ethyl acetate showed disease control values of 100, 80, and 43%, respectively, against wheat leaf rust. From the C. zedoaria rhizome extracts, an antifungal substance was isolated and identified as a sesquiterpene ketolactone based on the mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data. The active compound controlled the development of rice sheath blight, wheat leaf rust, and tomato late blight. Considering the in vivo antifungal activities of the sesquiterpene ketolactone and the C. zedoaria extracts, these results suggest that C. zedoaria can be used as a potent fungicide in organic agriculture.</P>

<P>The flux-lock type superconducting fault current llmiter (SFCL) uses the magnetic coupling between two coils connected in parallel with each other. This SFCL has the merit that both the resistance of high-T<SUB>C</SUB> superconducting (HTSC) element and the limiting current capacity can be simultaneously increased through the application of magnetic field into HTSC element. However, like other type of SFCLs using an iron core, unless the saturation of the iron core in the design is considered, the actual limited fault currents can be higher than expected as the saturation of the iron core occurs, and can lead to damage the electrical equipment of the power system. To analyse the dependence of the fault current in the flux-lock type SFCL on the fault angles, its electrical equivalent circuit with the magnetization branch was derived. From the electrical equivalent circuit, the fault current and the inner magnetic flux considering the fault angles as well as the design parameters such as winding direction and inductance ratio of two coils were calculated. The analysis results were compared with the experimental ones, and both the results agreed.</P>

Background/ Aims: Liver stiffness (LS) values measured using transient elastography (TE) can accurately assess the degree of liver fibrosis. The degree of liver fibrosis is significantly associated with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Thus, this study investigated whether LS values at radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can predict HCC recurrence after RFA. Methods: Between May 2005 and April 2011, a total of 56 patients with HCC who underwent RFA and LS value measurement at the same day were analyzed in this retrospective study. All were followed up for monitoring the development of HCC recurrence until March 2013. Results: The mean age of the patients (40 men, 16 women) was 62.1 years, and the median LS value was 23.0 kPa. During the follow-up period (median 27.9 [range, 1.1-77.3] months), 33 (58.9%) patients experienced HCC recurrence and 18 (32.1%) were dead. Median time to recurrence was 17.1 (range, 2.5-67.8) months and median time to mortality was 27.9 (range, 1.1-77.3) months. Patients with recurrence showed significantly higher prevalence of liver cirrhosis, spleen size, multiple tumors, and LS values, whereas they had significantly lower platelet count than patients without recurrence (all P<0.05). On multivariate analysis, together with previous anti- HCC treatment history, patients with a higher LS value >13.0 kPa were at a significant greater risk for HCC recurrence after RFA with a hazard ratio of 6.981 (P<0.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.650-28.782) compared with those with LS value ≤13.0 kPa. However, LS values were not predictive for overall survival (P=0.237). Conclusions: Our data suggest that LS values measured using TE can be a useful predictor of HCC recurrence after RFA. Further studies with large sample size are warranted for the validation of our results.
Nucleotide sequencing of cDNAs from Brassica rapa

To isolate the useful and interesting plant genes in large quantities from Brassica raga, random partial sequencing of leaf and inflorescence cDNA clones of Brassica rapa was carried out. cDNA libraries were made with mRNA prepared from leat and inflorescence organ of Brassica rapa, respectively. Approximately 50% of the cDNA clones contained cDNA insert longer than 300bp. Most of the clones have the poly(A) tail sequences. Partial nucleotide sequences of individual cDNA clone from both organs have been determined and compared with nucleotide: sequences in EMBL and amino acid sequences in PIR data bank. Preliminary results promise a good chance to get useful genes by this attempt.
A Study on Electro-optical Characteristics of the UV Aligned FFS Cell on the Organic Layer

In this study, we investigated the electro-optical (EO) characteristic of fringe-field switching (FFS) mode cell by the two kinds of ultraviolet (UV) alignment method on the organic thin film (polyimide: PI). The suitable organic layers for FFS cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the in-situ photoalignment method were studied; Disclination is observed after conventional photoalignment method for 1h, and in-situ photoalignment method for 1h. Monodomain alignment of the NLC can be observed via insitu photo alignment method for 2 h and 3 h. It is considered that NLC alignment is due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with oblique non-polarized UV irradiation on PI surface. An unstable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with conventional photoalignment method can be achieved. However, a stable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method (1 h), and V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photo alignment method was much stable comparing with that of other UV-aligned FFSLCD's. As a result, more stable EO performance of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method for 3h is obtained than that of the other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's.
