Splenosis is defined as an autotransplantation of the splenic tissue after splenic rupture or splenectomy, and occurs most frequently in the peritoneal cavity. Splenosis is usually asymptomatic and is found incidentally. We report a case of combined intrathoracic and intraperitoneal splenosis in a 54-year-old male who worked as a miner for 10 years in his twenties, and was a current smoker. He was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of an incidental left diaphragmatic mass. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography and bronchoscopy were performed to evaluate the possibility of malignancy. There was no evidence of malignancy, but the spleen was not visualized. Reviewing his medical history revealed previous splenectomy, following a dynamite explosion injury. Therefore, splenosis was suspected and technetium-99m-labeled heat-damaged red blood cell scan confirmed the diagnosis. Radionuclide imaging is a useful diagnostic tool for splenosis, which could avoid unnecessary invasive procedures.
Iatrogenic harlequin syndrome: a new case

The Harlequin syndrome, first described by Lanceet al. in 1988, represents an uncommon disorder of the sympathetic nervous system. We present the case of one patient with this remarkable syndrome, including a review of the literature. A 43-year-old woman presented to our clinic with a peculiar pattern of facial flushing. She has been experiencing flushing and sweating on the left side of her face after physical exercise or after taking a hot bath. The symptoms started about 2 years ago, after she had undergone an endoscopic surgery for the removal of a solitary pulmonary nodule. On examination at rest, no asymmetric facial flushing or sweating was noted. Neurological examination and laboratory tests were revealed no abnormality. As the symptom had appeared only after the endoscopic surgery, we suspected that there might have been an accidental damage to the sympathetic nerve innervating the right facial area during the surgery. To our knowledge, a clinical presentation of Harlequin syndrome has not been previously reported in the Korean dermatological literature.

Background: Topical retinoids induce skin fragility. As corneodesmosomes are important adhesion structures in the epidermal cohesion, an effect of retinoids on corneodesmosomes has been suspected. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of retinoid on the expression of corneodesmosomal components including desmoglein (DSG) 1, desmocollin (DSC) 1, corneodesmosin (CDSN) and kallikrein (KLK)s. Methods: 2% all-trans-retinol or ethanol was applied to the back of hairless mice for five days, and the structure of the stratum corneum was examined by transmission electron microscopy. The cultured human keratinocytes were treated with all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) in low or high calcium media for 24 hours. Results: Topical retinol increased corneocyte detachment and degradation of corneodesmosomes. RA significantly decreased DSG1 and DSC1 expression at the mRNA and protein levels in keratinocytes that were cultured in both low- and high-calcium media. On the other hand, CDSN mRNA levels did not decrease in low-calcium media or increase in high-calcium media after RA treatment. KLK5 and KLK7 expression did not increase after RA treatment. Conclusion: Our results indicate that DSG1 and DSC1 downregulation by RA could be related to the increased degradation of corneodesmosomes and consequent desquamation induced by retinoids. Study of Knee Brace Locking Timing and Walking Pattern Detected from an FSR and Knee Joint Angle

Many factors affect biomechanics of lower limbs during walking, including the gate state and the according pressure distribution of feet. However, such relationship between the pressure distribution and the gate status has not been taken into account in detail to analyze lower-limb kinematics and kinetics during walking. In this study, a sensor system with force sensing resistors (FSR) was developed to measure plantar pressure of feet and impulse acting on each joint to do characteristic analysis of plantar pressure of feet and lower-limb kinematics. Comparing to force plates and a motion capture system, the FSR sensing system can give the detail trace of the ground reaction and the pressure distribution of feet. The system is designed to be used for online monitoring and control of a lower-limb biomechanical device like a knee brace. Several target points of plantar are decided as characteristic ones with pilot tests. Then pattern matching between the pressure distribution and the lower-limb kinematics is investigated. Also, plantar pressure patterns are compared knee joint angle for analyzing precious walking patterns. In the paper, to reduce impact value during walking suggests knee brace locking timing detection through the FSR sensing and knee joint angle.
Removal of Organic Impurities from the Silicon Surface by Oxygen and UV Cleaning

We have studied the effect of oxygen and water vapor on the removal of organic impurities from the porous silicon surface under UV irradiation. Infrared spectrum observations of the treated surface suggest that decomposition of oxygen to produce ozone, atomic oxygen, and hydroxyl radical is a rate determination step for the overall cleaning process.
