Irradiation-induced disordering and amorphization of Al<sub>3</sub>Ti-based intermetallic compounds

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An in situ ion-irradiation study, simultaneously examined using transmission electron microscopy, was performed to investigate irradiation-induced disordering and amorphization of Al<SUB>3</SUB>Ti-based intermetallic compounds. Thin foil samples of two crystalline structures: D0<SUB>22</SUB>-structured Al<SUB>3</SUB>Ti and L1<SUB>2</SUB>-structured (Al,Cr)<SUB>3</SUB>Ti were irradiated using 1.0 MeV Kr ions at a temperature range from 40 K to 573 K to doses up to 4.06 × 10<SUP>15</SUP> ions/cm<SUP>2</SUP>. The results showed that both the compounds underwent an order-disorder transformation under irradiation, where both Al<SUB>3</SUB>Ti and (Al,Cr)<SUB>3</SUB>Ti ordered structures were fully transformed to the disordered face-centered cubic (FCC) structure except at the highest irradiation temperature of 573 K. A slightly higher irradiation dose was required for order-disorder transformation in case of Al<SUB>3</SUB>Ti as compared to (Al,Cr)<SUB>3</SUB>Ti at a given temperature. However, their amorphization resistances were different: while the disordered FCC (Al,Cr)<SUB>3</SUB>Ti amorphized at the irradiation dose of 6.25 × 10<SUP>14</SUP> ions/cm<SUP>2</SUP> (0.92 dpa) at 40 K and 100 K, the Al<SUB>3</SUB>Ti compound with the same disordered FCC structure maintained crystallinity up to 4.06 × 10<SUP>15</SUP> ions/cm<SUP>2</SUP> (5.62 dpa) at 40 K. The critical temperature for amorphization of (Al,Cr)<SUB>3</SUB>Ti under Kr ion irradiation is likely between 100 K and room temperature and the critical temperature for disordering between room temperature and 573 K.</P>

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>Using far‐ultraviolet (FUV) and near‐ultraviolet (NUV) photometry from guest investigator programmes on the <I>Galaxy Evolution Explorer</I> (<I>GALEX</I>) satellite, optical photometry from the MDM Observatory and optical integral‐field spectroscopy from SAURON, we explore the UV–line‐strength relations of the 48 nearby early‐type galaxies in the SAURON sample. Identical apertures are used for all quantities, avoiding aperture mismatch. We show that galaxies with purely old stellar populations show well‐defined correlations of the integrated FUV −<I>V</I> and FUV − NUV colours with the integrated Mg <I>b</I> and Hβ absorption line‐strength indices, strongest for FUV − NUV. Correlations with the NUV −<I>V</I> colour, Fe5015 index and stellar velocity dispersion σ are much weaker. These correlations put stringent constraints on the origin of the UV‐upturn phenomenon in early‐type galaxies and highlight its dependence on age and metallicity. In particular, despite recent debate, we recover the negative correlation between FUV −<I>V</I> colour and Mg line strength originally publicized by Burstein et al., which we refer to as the ‘Burstein relation’, suggesting a positive dependence of the UV upturn on metallicity. We argue that the scatter in the correlations is real and present mild evidence that a strong UV excess is preferentially present in slow‐rotating galaxies. We also demonstrate that most outliers in the correlations are galaxies with current or recent star formation, some at very low levels. We believe that this sensitivity to weak star formation, afforded by the deep and varied data available for the SAURON sample, explains why our results are occasionally at odds with other recent but shallower surveys. This is supported by the analysis of a large, carefully crafted sample of more distant early‐type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), more easily comparable with current and future large surveys.</P>
Ancestral benzo[a]pyrene exposure affects bone integrity in F3 adult fish (<i>Oryzias latipes</i>)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) at an environmentally relevant concentration (1μg/L) has previously been shown to affect bone development in a transgenerational manner in F3 medaka (<I>Oryzias latipes</I>) larvae (17dph). Here, we provide novel histomorphometric data demonstrating that the impaired bone formation at an early life stage is not recoverable and can result in a persistent transgenerational impairment of bone metabolism in F3 adult fish. A decrease in bone thickness and the occurrence of microcracks in ancestrally BaP-treated adult male fish (F3) were revealed by MicroCt measurement and histopathological analysis. The expression of twenty conserved bone miRNAs were screened in medaka and their relative expression (in the F3 ancestral BaP treatment <I>vs</I> the F3 control fish) were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. Attempt was made to link bone miRNA expression with the potential target bone mRNA expression in medaka. Five functional pairs of mRNA/miRNA were identified (Osx/miR-214, Col2a1b/miR-29b, Runx2/miR-204, Sox9b/miR-199a-3p, APC/miR-27b). Unique knowledge of bone-related miRNA expression in medaka in response to ancestral BaP-exposure in the F3 generation is presented. From the ecological risk assessment perspective, BaP needs to be regarded as a transgenerational skeletal toxicant which exerts a far-reaching impact on fish survival and fitness. Given that the underlying mechanisms of cartilage/bone formation are conserved between medaka and mammals, the results may also shed light on the potential transgenerational effect of BaP on skeletal disorders in mammals/humans.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> BaP-induced transgenerational bone impairment is not recoverable in adult F3 fish. </LI> <LI> Decreased bone thickness and increased number of microcracks were revealed. </LI> <LI> Five pairs of mRNA/miRNA might be involved in decreased osteoblast activity. </LI> </UL> </P>

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy of small intestine diagnosed in both childhood and adulthood. CD is caused by gluten, which produces gliadorphin during its digestion. The enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) breaks gliadorphin down nevertheless the last tripeptide remains and eventually inhibits DPP4, thus slowing down its process. Therefore, the idea is to produce an additional DPP4 enzyme which is crucial. Consequently, the functional DPP4 gene was cloned into pCDNA3 intermediate (FLAG+DPP4) vector and finally a recombinant plasmid pSB1C3 (Andersons promoters+ FLAG+DPP4) was constructed using synthetic biology. Normally, a DPP4 inhibitor is used as a cure for diabetes. Another important concern was overexpression of DPP4, which might lead to diabetes, accordingly the work was also performed for the regulation of the DPP4 gene expression. In this regard, three types of Anderson promoters (strong, moderate and weak) were utilized to study the control overexpression. This is the first report of idealistic trial for control the exogenous DPP4 gene-expression by molecular biologic tools.

<P>We present an analysis of the stellar populations of 102 visually selected early-type galaxies (ETGs) with spectroscopic redshifts (0.35 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 1.5) from observations in the Early Release Science program with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We fit one-and two-component synthetic stellar models to the ETGs UV-optical-near-IR spectral energy distributions and find that a large fraction (similar to 40%) are likely to have experienced a minor (f(YC) less than or similar to 10% of stellar mass) burst of recent (t(YC) less than or similar to 1 Gyr) star formation. The measured age and mass fraction of the young stellar populations do not strongly trend with measurements of galaxy morphology. We note that massive (M > 10(10.5) M-circle dot) recent star-forming ETGs appear to have larger sizes. Furthermore, high-mass, quiescent ETGs identified with likely companions populate a distinct region in the size-mass parameter space, in comparison with the distribution of massive ETGs with evidence of recent star formation (RSF). We conclude that both mechanisms of quenching star formation in disk-like ETGs and (gas-rich, minor) merger activity contribute to the formation of young stars and the size-mass evolution of intermediate redshift ETGs. The number of ETGs for which we have both HST WFC3 panchromatic (especially UV) imaging and spectroscopically confirmed redshifts is relatively small, therefore, a conclusion about the relative roles of both of these mechanisms remains an open question.</P>

<P>As a result of the characteristics of biomass, biomass exploitation as a secondary fuel feedstock in co-firing is only technically and economically acceptable in the range of 5-10% (w/w). In this study, torrefaction and solvent extraction as biomass pretreatments were conducted to address feedstock limitations, making a larger share of biomass for co-firing feasible. The physical and chemical characteristics of the solvent-extracted biomass were investigated using proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Biomass torrefied at 200, 250, 270, 300, and 330 degrees C was extracted by nonpolar organic solvent 1-methylnaphthalene at 350 degrees C for 1 h to produce ash-less biomass (extracted biomass). A dry, raw, woody biomass was also extracted under the same conditions to see the effect of torrefaction on the characteristics of extracted biomass and residue biomass. The result shows that solvent extraction was effective in producing ash-less biomass, with less than 0.1 wt % (dry basis) ash content remaining in the extracted fraction. It was also found that the torrefaction temperature had an effect on the extracted biomass yield and slightly influenced the physical and chemical properties of the extracted biomass. The unique properties of the extracted biomass make it possible to use for other purposes, namely, as high-value functional materials.</P>

The critical current, $I_c$, degradation behaviors with bending strain were investigated in a commercially available YBCO coated conductor tape. In particular, the strain reversibility of $I_c$ and the influence of repeated bending on $I_c$ have been studied. Also, repeated bending at 77 K was done in order to understand the Ie behavior under cyclic bending strains. A reversible behavior of $I_c$ has been found up to a high bending strain of 1.60% for the RABiTS/MOD processed CC sample with copper reinforcement. Under repeated bending, the Ie showed a 95% $I_c$ retention up to 100 cycles for bending strains of 1.0% or less. The n-value behavior showed a good agreement with the $I_c$ degradation behavior, representing that any cracking did not occur on the YBCO film resulting from the reinforcement provided by the copper stabilizers.
