Anti-inflammatory effects of three potassium salts of N,N-disubstituted 4-aminoazobenzenesulfonic acids were investigated and compared to that of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in rats with adjuvant arthritis (AA). Prophylactic oral administration of all compounds in a dose of 150 mg/ kg ameliorated AA symptoms in animals. The most pronounced anti-inflammatory activity at the end of the experiment showed compound 1 containing imino group: it significantly suppressed joint swelling by 48.2% in female and by 44.2% in male rats with AA. The development of polyarthritis after the treatment with this compound was the lowest in female (20%) and male (40%) rats (in control – 100% of animals with polyarthritis). All derivatives, and especially compound 1, also improved the systemic parameters of disease such as blood indices and internal organs’ weight, and showed no toxicity on the main organs such as liver and spleen.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the most common malignancy in immunesuppressed organ transplant recipients (OTRs). Whilst rates of other malignancies (both cutaneous and non-cutaneous) are elevated in this population, the increase is far less striking. This suggests that cSCC must be a highly immunogenic tumor. The tumor immune microenvironment is altered in cSCC from OTRs. It has reduced anti-tumor properties and instead provides an environment that facilitates tumor growth and survival. Understanding the composition and function of the tumor immune microenvironment in cSCC from OTRs is useful for prognostication and therapeutic decisions
Pushover Analyses of Slender Cantilever Bridge Piers with Strength and Ductility Degradation

Reinforced concrete bridge piers are often subject to spatially non-uniform deterioration whichtypically produces strength and ductility degradation. When piers are subject to deterioration, the sectional response is no longer uniform and the determination of the pushover curves from sectional response is no longer immediate. This paper proposes a simplified procedure to accomplish this task for RC bridge cantilever piers. The method is simplified only with respect to geometric nonlinearities and yields an accurate estimate of the ultimate displacement, free of numerical issues typical of fiber-based finite elements. The procedure is based on an iterative approach to enforce the element equilibrium under P-Delta effects induced by vertical loads and can consider arbitrary deterioration patterns through the specification of different moment-curvature response along the elevation. After validating the approach with experimental results, a parametric analysis of the influence of sectional strength and ductility degradation is carried out for the case study of a rectangular hollow RC pier. Results show that significant variations of the pier equivalent plastic hinge length can be expected because of the occurrence of deterioration in the lower part of the pier. Moreover, paper provides quantitative measure of the extent of the strength and ductility degradation.
The Immune Microenvironment in Basal Cell Carcinoma

The immune system plays a key role in the suppression and progression of basal cell carci- noma (BCC). The primary aetiological factor for BCC development is exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) which, particularly in lighter Fitzpatrick skin types, leads to the accumula- tion of DNA damage. UVR has roles in the generation of an immunosuppressive environ- ment, facilitating cancer progression. Rates of BCC are elevated in immunosuppressed patients, and BCC may undergo spontaneous immune-mediated regression. Histologic and immunohistochemical profiling of BCCs consistently demonstrates the presence of an immune infiltrate and associated immune proteins. Early studies of immune checkpoint inhibitors reveal promising results in BCC. Therefore, the host immune system and tumor responses to it are important in BCC pathogenesis. Understanding these interactions will be beneficial for disease prognostication and therapeutic decisions.
Trade in Developing East Asia: How It Has Changed and Why It Matters

East Asia, for long the epitome of successful engagement in trade, faces serious challenges: technological change that may threaten the very model of labor intensive industrialization and a backlash against globalization that may reduce access to important markets. The analysis in this article suggests that how East Asia copes with these global challenges will depend on how it addresses three more proximate national and regional challenges. The first is the emergence of China as a global trade giant, which is fundamentally altering the trading patterns and opportunities of its neighbors. The second is the asymmetric implementation of national reform – in goods trade and investment versus services – which is affecting the evolution of comparative advantage and productivity in each country. The third is the divergence between the relatively shallow and fragmented agreements that regulate the region's trade and investment and the growing importance of regional and global value chains as crucial drivers of productivity growth.
Investigation of the Instability of FGM box beams

A general geometrically non-linear model for lateral-torsional buckling of thick and thin-walled FGM box beams is presented. In this model primary and secondary torsional warping and shear effects are taken into account. The coupled equilibrium equations obtained from Galerkin's method are derived and the corresponding tangent matrix is used to compute the critical moments. General expression is derived for the lateral-torsional buckling load of unshearable FGM beams. The results are validated by comparison with a 3D finite element simulation using the code ABAQUS. The influences of the geometrical characteristics and the shear effects on the buckling loads are demonstrated through several case studies.

Distortional effect on global buckling and post-buckling behaviour of steel box beams

The homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to predict the pre- and post-buckling behaviour of simply supported steel beams with rectangular hollow section (RHS) is presented in this paper. The non-linear differential equations solved by HPM derive from a kinematics where large twist and cross-sections distortions are considered. The results (linear and non-linear paths) given by the present HPM are compared to those provided by the Newton–Raphson algorithm with arc length and by the commercial FEM code Abaqus. To investigate the effect of cross-sectional distortion of beams, some numerical examples are presented.
