Introduction: This systematic review evaluated the use of buffered versus non-buffered lidocaine to increase the efficacy of inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). Materials and Methods: Randomized, double-blinded studies from PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ProQuest were identified. Two of the authors assessed the studies for risk of bias. Outcomes included onset time, injection pain on a visual analog scale (VAS), percentage of painless injections, and anesthetic success rate of IANB. Results: The search strategy yielded 19 references. Eleven could be included in meta-analyses. Risk of bias was unclear in ten and high in one study. Buffered lidocaine showed 48 seconds faster onset time (95% confidence interval [CI], -42.06 to -54.40; P < 0.001) and 5.0 units lower (on a scale 0-100) VAS injection pain (95% CI, -9.13 to -0.77; P=0.02) than non-buffered. No significant difference was found on percentage of people with painless injection (P = 0.059), nor success rate (P = 0.290). Conclusion: Buffered lidocaine significantly decreased onset time and injection pain (VAS) compared with non-buffered lidocaine in IANB. However due to statistical heterogeneity and low sample size, quality of the evidence was low to moderate, additional studies with larger numbers of participants and low risk of bias are needed to confirm these results.
Development of a Magnetic-field Stimulation System for Cell Cultures in situ
G. Dominguez,S. Arias,Jose L. Reyes,Pablo Rogeli 한국자기학회 2017 Journal of Magnetics Vol.22 No.2
The effects of exposure to an extremely low-frequency magnetic field (25 ㎐ 20G) on animal cells have been studied. In some reports, stimulation was performed for fixed frequency and variations in magnitude; however, animal-cell experiments have established that both parameters play an important role. The present work undertook the modeling, simulation, and development of a uniform-magnetic-field generation system with variable frequency and stimulation intensity (0-60 ㎐, 1-25G) for experimentation with cell cultures in situ. The results showed a coefficient of variation less than 1% of the magnetic-field dispersion at the working volume, which is consistent with the corresponding simulation results demonstrating a uniform magnetic field. On the other hand, long-term tests during the characterization process indicated that increments of only 0.4℃ in the working volume temperature will not be an interfering factor when experiments are carried out in in situ cell cultures.

The aim of this study was to evaluate themycotoxicological quality of wheat flours used by bakeriesfrom the North Region in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, regarding the presence of mycotoxins. On collecting type-1refined wheat flour, a conglomerate sampling from 13 citiesand 3 bakeries per city (n = 39), selected from the definedregion was performed. The mycotoxins analysis was usingQuEChERS method and UPLC–MS/MS analysis. As aresult, 100% of samples presented contamination by DON,with concentrations ranging from 76.7 to 3630.2 lg kg-1and ZON was found in one sample (26.7 lg kg-1), whichrepresented 2.6% of the analyzed wheat flours. Othermycotoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2, DAS, HT-2toxin, OTA, FB1 and FB2) were not detected in the analyzedsamples.

We have recently developed betalain-richbeetroot (Beta vulgaris) dye (betalain) to be used in foodproducts. Betalain (30–300 mg/kg) intraperitoneal (i.p.)treatment diminished carrageenan (100 lg/paw)-inducedpaw edema and neutrophil migration to the paw skin tissue. Betalain (100 mg/kg) treatment by subcutaneous or peroral routes also inhibited the carrageenan-induced pawedema. Importantly, the post-treatment with betalain(100 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly inhibited carrageenan- andcomplete Freund’s adjuvant (10 ll/paw)-induced pawedema. Betalain (100 mg/kg) also reduced carrageenan(500 lg/cavity)-induced recruitment of total leukocytes, including mononuclear cells and neutrophils, as well asincreasing vascular permeability in the peritoneal cavity. Furthermore, betalain significantly reduced carrageenaninducedsuperoxide anion, tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-a) and interleukin (IL)-1b levels in the peritonealfluid, as well as augmenting IL-10 levels. Therefore, thiscompound presents prominent anti-inflammatory effect oncarrageenan-induced paw edema and peritonitis by reducingthe production of superoxide anion and the cytokinesTNF-a and IL-1b, in addition to increasing IL-10 levels. These results suggest that betalain shows therapeuticpotential that could be utilized in the treatment of inflammation-associated diseases.

Bromelia balansae (Family Bromeliaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in the central region of Brazil as a cough syrup and also eaten roasted. The methanolic extract of ripe fruits was analyzed by chromatographic methods and spectrometrically. Four glycoside flavonols were isolated: kaempferol-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside (1), kaempferol-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-d-glucopyranoside (2), quercetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-d-glucopyranoside (3), and kaempferol 3,7-di-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside (4). The resazurin microtiter assay was used to measure the biological activity in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The results showed a moderate activity of the methanolic extract with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 128μg/mL. Antioxidant activity was evaluated as free radical scavenging capacity and inhibition of peroxidation. Free radical scavenging capacity was assessed by measuring the scavenging activity of methanolic extract and methanolic fraction on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical. The methanolic extract showed low values of antioxidant activities, whereas the methanolic fraction exhibited free radical scavenging activity ranging from 20.2% to 91.1%, and the inhibition of peroxidation values ranging from 5.6% to 27.5%. This is the first chemical study reported in the literature about this species.

Advancing age is one of the risk factors for developing many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative alterations, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Studies have indicated that supplementation with resveratrol (RSV) might improve cerebrovascular function and reduce the risk of developing dementia. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to assess the effects of RSV on MCI and AD. MEDLINE-PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE were used to perform the search, and PRISMA guidelines were followed. Five studies met the eligible criteria; three with AD and two with MCI. In AD patients, the use of RSV reduces Aβ levels, improves brain volume, reduces the Mini-mental status score, and improves AD scores. In patients with MCI, this polyphenol prevents decline in Standard Volumes of Interest and increases the Resting-state Functional Connectivity score. RSV can activate the human silent information regulator 2/sirtuin 1 (Sirt-1) and can inhibit the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), 5-lipoxygenase, and nuclear factor-κB, resulting in the reduction of the proinflammation pathways. It is also associated with the increase in the levels of interleukin (IL)-10 and reduction of interferon-γ and IL-17. Both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects can be related to preventing neurodegenerative diseases, doing maintenance, and enabling the recovery of these conditions directly related to inflammation and oxidative stress. We suggest that the use of RSV can bring beneficial effects to patients with MCI or AD.

Silicon is a promising candidate for electrodes in lithium ion batteries due to its large theoretical energy density. Poor capacity retention, caused by pulverization of Si during cycling, frustrates its practical application. We have developed a nanostructured form of silicon, consisting of arrays of sealed, tubular geometries that is capable of accommodating large volume changes associated with lithiation in battery applications. Such electrodes exhibit high initial Coulombic efficiencies (i.e., >85%) and stable capacity-retention (>80% after 50 cycles), due to an unusual, underlying mechanics that is dominated by free surfaces. This physics is manifested by a strongly anisotropic expansion in which 400% volumetric increases are accomplished with only relatively small (<35%) changes in the axial dimension. These experimental results and associated theoretical mechanics models demonstrate the extent to which nanoscale engineering of electrode geometry can be used to advantage in the design of rechargeable batteries with highly reversible capacity and long-term cycle stability.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
