Populations of Codium amplivesiculatum were found in association with rhodolith beds. We present population trends of C. amplivesiculatum from surveys conducted in the southwestern Gulf of California based on monthly sampling from June 1999 to August 2000. Surveys were conducted at 2 sites in the San Lorenzo Channel at depths of 8 - 12 m. The parameters measured were percent cover, biomass and structure in relation to size of the thalli. From each thallus the following measurements were taken: length and diameter, proportion of each thallus with reproductive structures and the degree of fragmentation (measured as number of small thalli). Mean biomass and cover varied seasonally with the maximum (1036.6 g m–2 and 100% cover) present in June 2000 and the minimum in winter (0 g m–2 and 0% cover). The longest fronds (3 m) occurred during July 1999 and August 2000, while the maximum diameters of 1.0 cm were present during October and November 1999. There were no significant linear relationships between length and diameter of the fronds, suggesting independent growth. Reproductive structures were common in June and July 1999 with monoic and dioic thalli present. Most fronds were monoic, and this is the first record of this feature for this species. Fragmentation occurred in September, and may be associated with stress from early gametangial reproduction and the combination of high temperatures and low nutrients. A hypothetical life cycle for the species is presented.

This paper introduces a systematic top-down and bottom-up design methodology to assist the designer in the implementation of continuous-time (CT) cascade sigmadelta (ΣΔ) modulators. The salient features of this methodology are (a) flexible behavioral modeling for optimum accuracy-efficiency trade-offs at different stages of the top-down synthesis process, (b) direct synthesis in the continuous-time domain for minimum circuit complexity and sensitivity, (c) mixed knowledge-based and optimization-based architectural exploration and specification transmission for enhanced circuit performance, and (d) use of Pareto-optimal fronts of building blocks to reduce re-design iterations. The applicability of this methodology will be illustrated via the design of a 12-bit 20 MHz CT ΣΔ modulator in a 1.2 V 130 nm CMOS technology.

Background/Aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is intimately related to insulin resistance and ranges from a benign course to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. NAFLD management mainly involves dietary modification and weight loss. Although no fully successful pharmacological intervention is available, alternative therapies to treat NAFLD have shown promising results. Experimental studies have shown that D-002, a mixture of beeswax alcohols with antioxidant effects, is hepatoprotective. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of D-002 in patients with NALFD. Methods: Fifty patients with NAFLD were randomized to receive a placebo or D-002 (100 mg/day) for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was a significant ultrasonography-detected reduction of liver fat infiltration versus a placebo. Secondary endpoints were decreases in the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) index,insulin levels, serum liver enzymes, increases in plasma total antioxidant status (TAS) and improved clinical symptoms versus the placebo recipients. Results: At randomization, all indicators were comparable in both groups. At study completion, seven (28.0%) D-002-patients, but none of the placebo recipients,exhibited a normal liver echo pattern on ultrasonography (p < 0.01). Also,D-002 significantly reduced (p < 0.01 vs. baseline and placebo) the HOMA index and insulin levels and increased the TAS, but did not affect other parameters. The proportion of D-002-patients (12/25, 48.0%) showing symptom improvement was higher (p < 0.001) than that of the placebo group (1/25, 4.0%). The treatment was safe and well tolerated. Three patients in each group withdrew from the study. Conclusions: D-002 (100 mg/day) improved ultrasonographic findings, indicators of insulin resistance, plasma TAS and clinical evolution on NAFLD patients. Further studies, however, are needed to confirm these results.

Water motion is one of the main drivers in morphological variability in species within de order Laminariales, and most of our current knowledge is based on subtidal populations. Eisenia arborea is a dominant kelp species in the North Pacific, widely distributed along the Baja California Peninsula from mid intertidal down to subtidal areas. This species presents great variability in the intertidal zone but it has not been yet evaluated such variability according to wave exposure. The present work also identifies the spatial / temporal variation, particularly respect to the presence of stipes without medulla (hollow stipes) a feature common among other brown seaweeds. We evaluated the effects of wave action in morphological variation of intertidal Eisenia arborea (Laminariales, Ochrophyta) at Punta Eugenia. The spatial and temporal variation sampling was surveyed between February, May, July, and August 2004 in the intertidal of Punta Eugenia, Baja California Sur. Our results have shown that exposed sites correlate with increased length and width of stipes as compared to more protected sites. Hollow stipes frequency changed more in association with temporal variation than with spatial heterogeneity suggesting nutrient limitation for thalli development. Our results suggest that Eisenia arborea compensate by morphological modifications the stress of living in the intertidal zone by showing larger stipes. Hollow stipes might be are also a mechanical adaptation to increase survival in high energy environments.

An analysis of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of Sargassum lapazeanum was performed based on extensive sampling in three areas within its geographical range: a) San Juan de la Costa, b) Punta Calera, c) Punta Machos. Material was collected from low intertidal to subtidal populations and evaluated based on variations present within and between populations. Our goal was to comprehensively analyze the features of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of this species. Our observations showed that this species has cauline, which is anatomically composed of three tissues layers. This species is dioic, with male and female conceptacles in the same receptacle but with different maturation times. The present study confirmed the presence of cauline in this species; this structure was previously described for some species in the Gulf of California, such as Sargassum horridum, and for several species in Japan. This structure could be responsible for the growth of primary branches and may also generate a new plant. This trend might explain the perennial nature of this species at the population level. Field and laboratory experiments could help to delimit the ecophysiological conditions under which this structure starts to develop.

Bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts were prepared via impregnation method, with effects of Pd/Ni ratio (wt%) ontheir catalytic performance for the oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen being investigated. Synthesized catalysts were characterized by a series of techniques including XRD, Nitrogen adsorption–desorption, H2-TPR, XPS, ICP-AES, TEM, SEM, and EDX. Compared to monometallic Pd, the additionof Ni to Pd was found to be effective in enhancing the selective oxidation of cyclohexane. Parameters suchas the temperature of the reaction, reaction times, catalyst amount, initial oxygen pressure and differentsolvents were investigated. Optimum conditions to improve cyclohexane conversion and selectivitytowards KA-oil (a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) over 4.0%Pd-4.0%Ni/KIT-6 catalystincluded 140 C, 1.0 MPa O2 and acetonitrile as solvent. Under these reaction conditions, 10.87 % conversionand 95.45 % selectivity for KA-oil were observed after 8 h of reaction. Reusability studies of theselected catalyst revealed an outstanding stability along four reaction cycles.

We performed a performance assessment of a recently developed method: Lévy flight particle swarm optimization. This method, which was developed for optimization problems, has shown good results. There is not an application to inverse problems. Now, it is applied for inverse heat transfer, and results are good enough. In particular, a parameter called “limit” is analyzed for different values (from 10 to 150). It shows that performance of the method for estimating parameters in inverse problems is affected by this parameter. When limit reaches a value of 80, ordinary least squares norm and consuming time begin to exhibit better results.

The implementation of imaging methods that enable sensitive and specific observation of anatomical structures has been a constant in the evolution of endodontic therapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables 3-dimensional (3D) spatial anatomical navigation in the 3 volumetric planes (sagittal, coronal and axial) which translates into great accuracy for the identification of endodontic pathologies/conditions. CBCT interpretation consists of 2 main components: (i) the generation of specific tasks of the image and (ii) the subsequent interpretation report. A systematic and reproducible method to review CBCT scans can improve the accuracy of the interpretation process, translating into greater precision in terms of diagnosis and planning of endodontic clinical procedures. MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2023. This narrative review addresses the theoretical concepts, elements of interpretation and applications of the CBCT scan in endodontics. In addition, the contents and rationale for reporting 3D endodontic imaging are discussed.
Effects of essential oils on biological attributes of Trichogramma galloi adults

Bioactivity of nine essential oils (EOs) was studied on Anagasta kuehniella eggs in relation to the longevity of females, parasitism and emergence rates and sex ratio in the generations parental, F 1 and F 2 of Trichogramma galloi in comparison to a trade formulation of Azadirachta indica. There was no F 1 and F 2 progeny with Zingiber officinale being the most harmful. The greatest reductions in the parasitism rates (57, 43 and 28%) in the parental generation was caused by Allium sativum, Carapa guianensis and A. indica, respectively. In addition, A. sativum reduced the longevity (4.7 days) in the parental generation and emergence (33%) of F 1 . Tested EOs did not affect the sex ratio in the generations F 1 and F 2 and emergence in the F 2 . Allium sativum and Z. officinale were nonselective to T. galloi; while A. indica, C. guianensis and P. nigrum oils may compromise the progeny; therefore, their use must be avoided. Citrus sinensis, Mentha piperita, Origanum vulgare, Syzygium aromaticum and Thymus vulgare were selective to T. galloi, and these EOs are promising for IPM programs.
