Does Sarcopenia Increase the Risk for Fresh Vertebral Fragility Fractures?: A Case-Control Study

        Ashish Anand,Ajoy Prasad Shetty,K. R. Renjith,Sri Vijay Anand K. S.,Rishi Mugesh Kanna,Shanmuganathan Rajasekaran 대한척추외과학회 2020 Asian Spine Journal Vol.14 No.1

Study Design: Case-control study. Purpose: Sarcopenia is an age associated condition characterized by decrease in muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. We aimed to investigate whether sarcopenia increased the risk of vertebral fragility fractures among the elderly. Overview of Literature: Initial reports on sarcopenia suggest its contribution to the development of vertebral fragility fractures. However, recent studies showed contradictory findings. Methods: Fifty-one consecutive patients with vertebral fragility fractures and matched controls without fractures were evaluated for sarcopenia, T-score, body mass index, and presence of preexisting vertebral fractures. Sarcopenia was diagnosed as total psoas cross-sectional area (TPA) 2 standard deviations below normative value from normal young adults and decreased handgrip strength (26 kg for men and 18 kg for women). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the fresh fracture occurrence as the dependent variable. Results: Sarcopenia was confirmed in 29.4% and 7.8% of cases and controls (p=0.005), respectively; 56.8% and 13.7% of cases and controls had previous vertebral fractures. Sarcopenia prevalence was greater among those with previous fractures (38% vs. 7.6%; odds ratio, 7.76; p<0.001). TPA was lower among the cases (1,278 mm2 vs. 1,569 mm2, p=0.001) and those with previous fractures (1,168 mm2 vs. 1,563 mm2, p<0.001). Handgrip strength was greater among those without previous fractures (19.6 kg vs. 16.3 kg, p=0.05). In multivariate analysis, sarcopenia was not identified as a significant predictor of fresh fractures whereas previous fractures and lower T-score were found to be significant. Conclusions: Sarcopenia is not an independent risk factor for fresh vertebral fragility fractures in the elderly.

Simplified DC voltage sensorless control of single-phase PFC converters in EV chargers

Anand, Nidumolu Vijaya,Praneeth, Ammanamanchi Venkata Jaya Sai,Yalla, Naveen,Sood, Vijay K. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2022 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.22 No.11

A novel method for controlling the output DC link voltage of a single-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter without using a DC voltage sensor for electric vehicle (EV) charging is proposed in this paper. The conventional boost PFC converter normally uses three expensive sensors, i.e., at the input voltage, the input current, and the output voltage. These sensors are used to regulate the power quality and maintain system stability. To reduce the cost and hardware complexity in the power converter, a DC voltage sensorless control using an estimator is proposed. This method utilizes the available input voltage and current signals to predict the output DC link voltage. This predicted output voltage contains an average DC component superimposed with a small ripple content at double the line frequency (2f). The proposed control method tracks the reference sinewave signal to maintain a high-power factor. The converter also exhibits very stable behavior under transient load variations. Simulated and experimental validation results obtained with a 1 kW prototype PFC converter are included.

Intra-alveolar extraction of linguoverted mandibular premolars – the Shetye technique: a technical note

        Shetye Omkar Anand,Mandrekar Pooja Narendra,Khandeparker Rakshit Vijay,Fernandes Trishala Bhadauria,Dhupar Vikas,Akkara Francis 대한구강악안면외과학회 2022 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.48 No.4

Extraction of premolars for orthodontic purposes may prove challenging when the tooth is blocked or lingualised. The standard buccal approach may prove difficult in such cases. A novel technique was used for 16 patients with healthy linguoverted mandibular premolars using maxillary extraction forceps. The ease of extraction increased and resulted in uneventful postoperative healing in all patients. The authors suggest this as a preferred tech-nique for extracting mandibular premolars in linguoversion.

        Kumar, Nitish,Anand, K.G. Vijay,Reddy, Muppala P. 한국작물학회 2010 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.13 No.3

Jatropha curcas, the energy plant has attained great attention in recent years because of its biodiesel production potential; however, oil and deoiled cakes are toxic. A non-toxic variety of J. curcas is reported from Mexico. A simple and efficient protocol has been developed for plant regeneration using cotyledonary petiole explants of non-toxic variety of J. curcas. The percentage of induction of shoot buds (59.11%), and the number of shoot buds (5.01) per explant was achieved on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with $2.27\;{\mu}M$ thidiazuron (TDZ). These induced shoot buds multiplied when subcultured on MS medium supplemented with $10\;{\mu}M$ kinetin (Kn), $4.5\;{\mu}M$ 6-benzyl aminopurine (BAP), and $5.5\;{\mu}M$ $\alpha$-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) for 4 weeks and subsequent elongation achieved on MS medium supplemented with $2.25\;{\mu}M$ BAP and $8.5\;{\mu}M$ indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Shoots more than 2 cm long were harvested and cultured on MS medium containing different concentrations and combinations of IBA, IAA, NAA, and $0.25\;mg\;L^{-1}$ activated charcoal, and 19.91% rooting was achieved in $15\;{\mu}M$ IBA, $5.7\;{\mu}M$ IAA, and $16.5\;{\mu}M$ NAA after 4 weeks with more than 90% survival rate.

Classification of Magnetic Resonance Brain Images using Bi-dimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition and Autoregressive Model

        Omkishor Sahu,Vijay Anand,Vivek Kanhangad,Ram Bilas Pachori 대한의용생체공학회 2015 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.5 No.4

Purpose Automated classification of brain magnetic resonance(MR) images has been an extensively researched topic inbiomedical image processing. In this work, we propose anew approach for classifying normal and abnormal brain MRimages using bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition(BEMD) and autoregressive (AR) model. Methods In our approach, brain MR image is decomposedinto four intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using BEMD andAR coefficients from multiple IMFs are concatenated toform a feature vector. Finally a binary classifier, least-squaressupport vector machine (LS-SVM), is employed to discriminatebetween normal and abnormal brain MR images. Results The proposed technique achieves 100% classificationaccuracy using second-order AR model with linear andradial basis function (RBF) as kernels in LS-SVM. Conclusions Experimental results confirm that the performanceof the proposed method is quite comparable with the existingresults. Specifically, the presented approach outperformsone-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (1D-EMD)based classification of brain MR images.

Influence of Nanoparticles Reinforcements on Aluminium 6061 Alloys Fabricated via Novel Ultrasonic Aided Rheo-Squeeze Casting Method

        T. Arunkumar,Velmurugan Pavanan,Vijay Anand Murugesan,V. Mohanavel,Karthikeyan Ramachandran 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.1

This study emphasis on a novel fabrication technique to fabricate hybrid cermets using Al 6061 alloy with nano sized SiC,Al2O3 and TiO2 as reinforcements. During the fabrication process, the melted pool was ultrasonicated to disperse nanoparticles at 20 kHz for 5 min and pressure of 50 MPa was applied to eliminate voids. The infuence of nanoparticles on physical, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile, wear and thermal studies. Cermets with Al2O3 reinforcementsshowed higher mechanical performance compared to Al alloy. This enhancement could be related to the uniform distribution of Al2O3 with refnement in grain size of Al alloy which was observed via surface analysis. The morphological studiesprovided justifable evidence of homogeneous distribution, nominal cluster along with agglomeration and cavities shrinkingon the cermets. The agglomeration of nanoparticles along with SiC protected the cermet in corrosion and abrasive wearby~97% and~71%. The study evidenced the novel fabrication method using ultrasonic rheo-squeeze casting led to improvement in mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid cermets.

Well-Differentiated Papillary Mesothelial Tumor: An Unusual Radiologic Presentation: A Case Report

        Moslem Abdelghafar,Krishna Anand,Antonio Paiva-Correia,Elaine Paula Smith,Francoise Galateau Salle,Vijay Joshi 대한심장혈관흉부외과학회 2023 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.56 No.3

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor (WDPMT) is an uncommon tumor, formerly named well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma in the 2015 World Health Organization classification. It has a characteristic papillary architecture, bland cytologic features, a tendency toward superficial spread without invasion, and a good prognosis due to its clinically indolent behavior with prolonged survival. Rare cases with superficial invasion are termed WDPMT with invasive foci. WDPMT occurs primarily in the peritoneum of reproductive- age women, but also rarely in the pleura. We report a case of a 60-year-old woman who developed WDPMT with minimal invasion in the pleura with atypical radiological features and a family history of mesothelioma and indirect asbestos exposure.
