Combating anaemia is a global public health challenge of the developing world. Nutritional anaemia is a serious health problem faced by Indian school children. An investigation was taken up to study the effect of non iron containing Ayurvedic preparation Sootshekhar Rasa (SR) plus Sitopaladi Churna (SC) along with iron and folic acid (IFA) for improving nutritional anaemia among adolescent school going students of Dehradun district in Northern India. The blinded, controlled randomized trial comprised of 820 adolescents anaemic students aged 11 - 18 years. The anaemic students were randomly divided into 4 groups, students of group I (control) received starch, group II, III, and IV students received daily dose of (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg), IFA and (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg) + IFA, respectively. All the students received treatment for 90days and were followed up for next 180days. At the end of follow-up (day 270), significant increase of haemoglobin (Hb) level from the base line was recorded in all treatment groups. The maximum gain in Hb concentration was noted in group IV (10.1 ± 0.6 g/L), which was significantly higher than any other group. There were 123 drop-outs; however, no major side effect of treatment was noted in any student. We conclude that daily dose of (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg) along with IFA can produce sustainable improvement of nutritional anaemia in adolescent students.

Recurrent Acute Pancreatitis/ Chronic Pancreatitis (RAP/ CP) is generally marked by sudden onset of symptoms like severe abdominal pain, vomiting and weight loss that needs emergency hospitalization. Owing to irreversible and progressive nature of the disease and limitations of conventional treatment, many patients look for an alternative solution. Here, we report data of 250 well diagnosed cases of acute recurring/ chronic pancreatitis, enrolled in between January 1997 to August 2016, in our Ayurvedic clinical practice in Northern part of India. Ayurveda is well recognized as an independent medical system parallel to conventional medicines in India and a subject is free to opt for any system of medicine for the prevention and treatment of any ailment. The subjects were treated with a complex herbo-mineral formulation based on the principles of Rasa Shastra in Ayurveda that deals with the therapeutics of processed metals in the prevention and treatment of diseases. They were also prescribed a regulated balanced diet and lifestyle. Significant improvement has been noted in subjects who have completed the treatment.
Left Atrial Appendages Occlusion: Current Status and Prospective

Stroke continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Oral anticoagulation (OAC) provides protection against stroke and peripheral embolization in AF but significant proportion of patients could not be started on anticoagulation because of bleeding complications. Left atrial appendage harbors clot in about 90% of nonvalvular AF. The advent of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) techniques has provided these patients with alternative to OAC for stroke prophylaxis. Multiple LAAO devices are currently available with Watchman and Amulet being the most commonly used in clinical practice. Randomized studies are available for Watchman device only. Data on Amplatzer Cardiac Plug, Amulet and Lariat devices are limited by the paucity of randomized data. Long-term data on different LAAO techniques are showing promising results. Device related thrombosis continues to be a serious complication associated with LAAO. Future studies should look into comparative effectiveness between different LAAO techniques, optimal patient selection, risk of complications, and anticoagulant treatment after LAAO. This article aims to provide current available evidence on efficacy and safety of different LAAO devices and future prospective.

This study analyzed the BC associated with PM1 and the contribution of biomass burning to the BC using a portable seven-channel Dual spot Aethalometer in and around Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, India, during April 2021. Additionally, CO2 and meteorological parameters (Temperature, Pressure, and Relative Humidity) was measured. The minimum concentration of BC was found in rural areas where the contribution of biomass burning to the BC is highest. The observed spatial variability of BC over Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) area is minimal. Five days back-trajectory analysis was done using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model to understand the regional influences of air masses at Gangtok. The air mass of the studied region is under influence of trans-regional transport from Indo-Gangetic Plains affecting the BC concentration over the studied region. The black carbon presence in the ambient air near the glacier heights in the Eastern Himalayan region may significantly cause localized warming, thereby enhancing glacier melts. The results have significant bearing for the policy-makers to take corrective steps in addressing the issue of rising BC concentration in high altitude regions. A further detailed study is needed to examine the effect of BC on radiative forcing and its large-scale effect on the East Asian summer monsoon using regional climate models.
A compact-sized surface EMG sensor for myoelectric hand prosthesis

Myoelectric prosthesis requires a sensor that can reliably capture surface electromyography (sEMG) signal from amputeesfor its controlled operation. The main problems with the presently available EMG devices are their extremely high cost, largeresponse time, noise susceptibility, less amplitude sensitivity, and larger size. This paper proposes a compact and aff ordableEMG sensor for the prosthetic application. The sensor consists of an electrode interface, signal conditioning unit, and powersupply unit all encased in a single package. The performance of dry electrodes employed in the skin interface was comparedwith the conventional Ag/AgCl electrodes, and the results were found satisfactory. The envelope detection technique in thesensor based on the tuned RC parameters enables the generation of smooth, faster, and repeatable EMG envelope irrespectiveof signal strength and subject variability. The output performance of the developed sensor was compared with commercialEMG sensor regarding signal-to-noise ratio, sensitivity, and response time. To perform this, EMG data with both deviceswere recorded for 10 subjects (3 amputees and 7 healthy subjects). The results showed 1.4 times greater SNR values and45% higher sensitivity of the developed sensor than the commercial EMG sensor. Also, the proposed sensor was 57% fasterthan the commercial sensor in producing the output response. The sEMG sensor was further tested on amputees to controlthe operation of a self-designed 3D printed prosthetic hand. With proportional control scheme, the myoelectric hand setupwas able to provide quicker and delicate grasping of objects as per the strength of the EMG signal.

In the present investigation an effort has been made to produce Al-Fly ash green composite using liquid state stir casting technique followed by green ultrasonic vibration such that it can improve wettability of fly-ash with aluminium by adding magnesium in the presence of argon gas. Addition of magnesium increases wettability of fly-ash particle in the molten aluminium and improves mechanical properties of Al-Fly ash green composite to a great extent. Incorporation of magnesium enhances the homogeneous allocation of fly ash particles in the pure aluminium alloy. More uniform distribution of Fly ash provides better mechanical properties. In this study, sample of Al/2 wt.% Mg/8 wt.% Fly ash provides most excellent outcome amongst all the selected composition. Microstructures show that the distribution of reinforcements is more uniform in this composition. TEM image shows proper wettability between aluminium and reinforcements. Density, cost estimation, hardness, toughness, ductility and tensile strength were also calculated to observe the result of magnesium and fly ash addition in aluminium matrix.

Ethnic fermented foods are known for their unique aroma, flavour, taste, texture and other sensory properties preferred by every ethnic community in this world culturally as parts of their eatables. Some beneficial microorganisms associated with fermented foods have several functional properties and health-promoting benefits. Bacteriocins are the secondary metabolites produced by the microorganisms mostly lactic acid bacteria present in the fermented foods which can act as lantibiotics against the pathogen bacteria. Several studies have been conducted regarding the isolation and characterization of potent strains as well as their association with different types of bacteriocins. Collective information regarding the gene organizations responsible for the potent effect of bacteriocins as lantibiotics, mode of action on pathogen bacterial cells is not yet available. This review focuses on the gene organizations, pathways include for bacteriocin and their mode of action for various classes of bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria in some ethnic fermented foods.
