Background: The number of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients in Taiwan has increased in recent years; therefore, the effective dissemination of information related to symptom care has become especially important. Previous studies indicated that the physical and psychological status of cancer patients can be effectively improved by telephone counseling services (TCS). Thus, determining the most effective means of establishing a TCS to support the clinical practice of oncology has become a crucial goal for nursing. The purposes of this study were to analysis the content of the TCS for CRC and explore stratification of the TCS. Materials and Methods: The study design was retrospective. A total of 850 calls were made to CRC patients in the cancer center of Southern Taiwan during the period of January 2007- December 2011. A structure questionnaire was adopted to analysis satisfaction. Results: Responses provided by the TCS included information regarding nutrition, side effects resulting from chemotherapy and pain. Moreover, 28.7% of CRC patients needed advanced treatment. More than 90% satisfaction with all aspects of the calls was found. Conclusions: The TCS coulkd be shown to provide an effective means by which to expand the reach of nursing care to different times, places and patients, allowing for greater cost efficiency and more rapid service.
Factors Predicting Survival of Patients with Gastric Cancer
Lin, Wen-Li,Sun, Jia-Ling,Chang, Shu-Chan,Wu, Pei-Hua,Huang, Wen-Tsung,Tsao, Chao-Jung Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.14
Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in Taiwan. The literature has previously shown that age, tumor site, T categories, and number of metastatic nodes significantly affect prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term survival of patients with gastric cancer, as well as the effect of particular prognostic factors on survival. Materials and Methods: This was a survival analysis study with retrospective design. We reviewed the records of 64 patients with adenocarcinoma of the stomach who had undergone gastrectomy with curative intent between 2009 and 2012 at a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. Data extracted from patient documents included age, gender distribution, tumor location, and pathological grading. Results: The median follow-up time was 4 years, and there were 31 deaths attributed to gastric cancer. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that retrieval of less than 15 lymph nodes from a patient was a significant predictor of survival. A significant predictor of poorer survival was higher pathological grading. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the number of lymph nodes retrieved and pathological grading could be viewed as crucial prognostic factors affecting the survival of individuals with gastric cancer.

The surface of self-made MoS2 nanosheets with five-layer structure was successively decorated by zinc borate (ZB) nanoparticles with coordination enhancement on the tribological performance and modified by three types of modifiers for improving dispersivity in oil. A series of characterizations determined the chemical modification and composite structure of the ZB/MoS2 nanocomposites. The tribological properties of the chemically capped ZB/MoS2 nanocomposites were extensively examined on a ball-on-ball wear tester. The average friction coefficient and average wear scar diameter of the OA-ZB/MoS2-based oil dropped by about 25.2% and 52.2%, and furthermore the extreme pressure performance increased by about 15.2% compared to oil.

Chao-Jung Chen,Bi-Fang Lee,Wei-Jen Yao,Pei-Shan Wu,Wen-Chung Chen,Shu-Lin Peng,Nan-Tsing Chiu 대한영상의학회 2009 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.10 No.2
We present here the case of a 40-year-old woman with a greater than 10 year prior history of bilateral breast silicone injection and saline bag implantation. Bilateral palpable breast nodules were observed, but the ultrasound scan was suboptimal and the magnetic resonance imaging showed no gadoliniumenhanced tumor. The 18F-FDG PET/CT scan showed a hypermetabolic nodule in the left breast with a 30% increase of 18F-FDG uptake on the delayed imaging, and this mimicked breast cancer. She underwent a left partial mastectomy and the pathology demonstrated a siliconoma.

In this article, thermal nanoimprint lithography (thermal-NIL) has been utilized to transfer the microgroove pattern onto the plastic substrate. Without coating alignment polymer, the microgrooves on the flexible substrates can align liquid crystals (LCs) directly. The flexible LC cell is shown to maintain comparable electro-optical properties while bending. The plastic film and the alignment layer integrated into an alignment substrate could effectively prevent cracks of the additional polymer alignment layer during the bending process. This method is applicable to the roll-to-roll process to increase the production efficiency. Citrus grandis peel (CGP) is a beverage ingredient and a medicinal herb in Oriental countries. Cyclosporine and tacrolimus, important immunosuppressants with narrow therapeutic windows, are widely used in transplant patients. This study investigated the effects of co-administering CGP on the bioavailability of cyclosporine and tacrolimus. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were orally administered tacrolimus or cyclosporine with and without CGP. The concentrations of cyclosporine and tacrolimus in blood were assayed by monoclonal fluorescence polarization immunoassay and microparticle enzyme immunoassay, respectively. P-glycoprotein- and cytochrome P 450 3A4 (CYP3A4)-associated mechanisms were investigated by using everted rat intestinal sac and recombinant CYP3A4 isozyme. The results showed that CGP significantly increased the bioavailability of cyclosporine and tacrolimus by 100.0% and 234.7%, respectively. Ex vivo studies indicated that the interaction was mediated by the inhibition of CYP3A4. We suggest that CGP is contraindicated for transplant patients treated with cyclosporine or tacrolimus to minimize the risk of intoxication.
Chlorella Protects Against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Pancreatic β-Cell Damage
Chia-Yu Lin,Pei-Jane Huang,Che-Yi Chao 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.12
Oxidative stress has been implicated in the etiology of pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and diabetes. Studies have shown that chlorella could be important in health promotion or disease prevention through its antioxidant capacity. However, whether chlorella has a cytoprotective effect in pancreatic β-cells remains to be elucidated. We investigated the protective effects of chlorella on H2O2-induced oxidative damage in INS-1 (832/13) cells. Chlorella partially restored cell viability after H2O2 toxicity. To further investigate the effects of chlorella on mitochondria function and cellular oxidative stress, we analyzed mitochondria membrane potential, ATP concentrations, and cellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Chlorella prevented mitochondria disruption and maintained cellular ATP levels after H2O2 toxicity. It also normalized intracellular levels of ROS to that of control in the presence of H2O2. Chlorella protected cells from apoptosis as indicated by less p-Histone and caspase 3 activation. In addition, chlorella not only enhanced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS), but also partially restored the reduced GSIS after H2O2 toxicity. Our results suggest that chlorella is effective in amelioration of cellular oxidative stress and destruction, and therefore protects INS-1 (832/13) cells from H2O2-induced apoptosis and increases insulin secretion. Chlorella should be studied for use in the prevention or treatment of diabetes.

Bifacial semi-transparent perovskite (PVSK) solar cell is a promising candidate to achieve high photo-electrical conversion efficiency (PCE) in a tandem structure with Si solar cells. The gap between lab-scale cells and large area modules needs to be closed using innovative patterning technology. In this paper we demonstrate that a single nanosecond pulsed laser (wavelength 532 nm, pulse duration 7 ns) can be used to perform all scribing processes, i.e. P1, P2 and P3, to manufacture PVSK solar modules. Compared to picosecond or femtosecond lasers reported in the literature, our approach has the advantages of high stability and low cost, and is thus applicable to large scale manufacturing of PVSK solar modules. Detailed laser processing parameters such as laser power and overlap ratio etc. have been studied to achieve optimal results for each scribing process. A mini module with two cells was fabricated on a 2 × 2 cm2 substrate, showing an active area efficiency of 12.5%, FF of 72.4%, and high GFF of 94%.
