The object of this study was to investigate caries preventive effect of chewing gum containing xylitol, funoran, calcium hydrogen phosphate and casein phosphopeptide by examining Vickers' hardness and surface roughness with confocal laser microscope. Early caries-like lesions were created using 0.1 M lactic acid-sodium hydroxide buffer(pH 4.0). 8 pieces of 3am diameter bovine enamel specimen with early caries-like lesions were mounted into the recesses of lingual surface of the acrylic mandibular removable appliance. 13 subjects were the appliance for daytime and chewed control and experimental gums 7 times in a day, for 3 days. In order to evaluate the remineralization effect of chewing gum on specimens, we measured vickers' hardness number after chewing gum, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days after and calculated surface roughness immediately after chewing gum. Vickers' hardness number of experimental chewing gum was significantly higher than control in 2 and 3 days after. Surface roughness of experimental chewing gum was significantly lower than control immediately after chewing gum. These results showed that experimental gum has more effective in remineralization of bovine tooth enamel, and it is more effective at immediately after chewing.

<P>Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is a condition of sublethal transient global ischemia and exhibits neuroprotective effects against subsequent lethal ischemic insult. We, in this study, examined the neuroprotective effects of IPC and its effects on immunoreactive changes of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) 1 and SOD2, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 region after transient forebrain ischemia. Pyramidal neurons of the stratum pyramidale (SP) in the hippocampal CA1 region of animals died 5 days after lethal transient ischemia without IPC (8.6% (ratio of remanent neurons) of the sham-operated group); however, IPC prevented the pyramidal neurons from subsequent lethal ischemic injury (92.3% (ratio of remanent neurons) of the sham-operated group). SOD1, SOD2, CAT and GPX immunoreactivities in the sham-operated animals were easily detected in pyramidal neurons in the stratum pyramidale (SP) of the hippocampal CA1 region, while all of these immunoreactivities were rarely detected in the stratum pyramidale at 5 days after lethal transient ischemia without IPC. Meanwhile, their immunoreactivities in the sham-operated animals with IPC were similar to (SOD1, SOD2 and CAT) or higher (GPX) than those in the sham-operated animals without IPC. Furthermore, their immunoreactivities in the stratum pyramidale of the ischemia-operated animals with IPC were steadily maintained after lethal ischemia/reperfusion. Results of western blot analysis for SOD1, SOD2, CAT and GPX were similar to immunohistochemical data. In conclusion, IPC maintained or increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes in the stratum pyramidale of the hippocampal CA1 region after subsequent lethal transient forebrain ischemia and IPC exhibited neuroprotective effects in the hippocampal CA1 region against transient forebrain ischemia.</P>

Purpose: The most important prognostic factors in gastric cancer are depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis. Therefore, the prognosis for serosa and lymph node negative gastric cancer is favorable. However, there is no general agreement on the prognostic factors in this subset of patients. This study was undertaken to evaluate the prognostic significances of venous invasion (VI), lymphatic invasion (LI), and perineural invasion (NI) in T1 and T2 gastric cancer without lymph node involvement. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 206 patients with T1 and T2, lymph node negative gastric cancer who underwent a curative resection from 1989 to 1993 at Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Seoul, Korea. The Chi-square test was used to determine the statistical significance of differences, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate survival rates. Significant differences in the survival rates were assessed using the log-rank test, and the Cox regression method was used to evaluate independent prognostic significance. Results: The rate of VI, LI and NI correlated well with the depth of tumor invasion. The rates of VI (+) for T1 vs T2 was $0\%\;vs\;5.1\%$, of LI (+) was $5.6\%\;vs\;26.8\%$, and of NI (+) was $1.6\%\;vs\;26.8\%$ in NI (+). There were 13 recurrent cases, 10 cases out of the 13 were T2 gastric cancers, and the recurrence rate was higher in LI (+) and NI (+) cases than in LI (-) and NI (-) cases. The 5-year survival rates were $93.4\%$ in LI (-) cases, $77.4\%$ in LI (+) cases, $92.5\%$ in NI (-) cases, $74\%$ in NI(+) cases, $95.9\%$ in LI (-) NI (-) cases, and $73.9\%$ in LI (+) NI (+) cases. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that simultaneous LI and NI was the only significant factor influencing the prognosis. Conclusion: These results suggest that simultaneous lymphatic and perineural invasion may be an independent prognostic factor in patients with T1 and T2 gastric cancer without lymph node metastasis.
A Pyridazine-Based Fluorescent Probe Targeting A <i>β</i> Plaques in Alzheimer's Disease

<P>Accumulation of <I>β</I>-amyloid (A<I>β</I>) plaques comprising A<I>β</I>40 and A<I>β</I>42 in the brain is the most significant factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thus, the detection of A<I>β</I> plaques has increasingly attracted interest in the context of AD diagnosis. In the present study, a fluorescent pyridazine-based dye that can detect and image A<I>β</I> plaques was designed and synthesized, and its optical properties in the presence of A<I>β</I> aggregates were evaluated. An approximately 34-fold increase in emission intensity was exhibited by the fluorescent probe after binding with A<I>β</I> aggregates, for which it showed high affinity (<I>K</I><SUB><I>D</I></SUB> = 0.35 <I>µ</I>M). Moreover, the reasonable hydrophobic properties of the probe (log <I>P</I> = 2.94) allow it to penetrate the blood brain barrier (BBB). In addition, the pyridazine-based probe was used in the histological costaining of transgenic mouse (APP/PS1) brain sections to validate the selective binding of the probe to A<I>β</I> plaques. The results suggest that the pyridazine-based compound has the potential to serve as a fluorescent probe for the diagnosis of AD.</P>

<P>Thanks to the combination of damascene gate and outer poly-Si sidewall spacer process, we have successfully fabricated twin silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) memory (TSM) transistors with 20-nm twin nitride storage nodes under an 80-nm gate. In terms of device manufacturability, the damascene gate process makes it possible to realize physically separated structure and the outer poly-Si sidewall spacer scheme contributes to realization of 20-nm long nitride storage node. Compared with conventional SONOS transistor, the fabricated TSM transistor maintains its threshold voltage margin between the forward and reverse reads down to 80-nm long gate. The TSM transistor also shows stable and reliable characteristics: up to 10<SUP>5</SUP> program/erase cycles endurance and fairly good bake retention at 150°C.</P>
Binding Affinities of Carbohydrate-Conjugated Chlorins for Galectin-3

Carbohydrate-conjugated chlorins were synthesized for use as biosensors for the detection of the galectin-3 cancer marker. We used ELISA, SDS-gel electrophoresis, and Bradford assays to examine the binding of galectins to d-(+)-galactose- and b-lactose-conjugated chlorins. The binding affinities of these conjugated chlorins for galectin-3 were quantified using fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence emission of the carbohydrate-conjugated chlorins decreased as the amount of galectin-3 in the binding reaction increased over a limited concentration range, indicating that carbohydrate-conjugated chlorins are potentially useful fluorescence biosensors for the galectin-3 cancer marker.

<B>Background and Objectives</B><P>Several studies have reported controversial results about clinicopathological features and prognoses in gastric cancer patients with respect to age, partly due to variable definitions of young age and inhomogeneity of the patient population. The aim of study was to analyze clinicopathological features and prognostic value of all stages of gastric cancer in a large consecutive series.</P><B>Methods</B><P>Between 2000 and 2005, 3,362 patients with all stages of gastric cancer were enrolled in database. Patients were divided into three groups: group 1 (≤45), group 2 (46–70), and group 3 (≥71).</P><B>Results</B><P>Upper location and linitis plastica were more frequent in group 1. Young patients had a higher proportion of poorly differentiated and signet ring cell type with elevated CA19-9 level. Depressed type was more frequent in early gastric cancer (EGC) while Bormann type IV and Lauren diffuse type were more common in AGC in group 1. In curatively resected patients, a 5-year survival rate was significantly higher in group 1 than older groups. Stage, vein invasion, curative resection, and CA19-9 level were significant prognostic factors in all gastric cancer.</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>Clinicopathological features associated with young gastric cancer include upper location, linitis plastica, histopathologically diffuse type, and unresectability.
