Outcomes of comprehensive fixed appliance orthodontic treatment

Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the occlusal outcome and duration of fixed orthodontic therapy from clinical trials in humans with the Objective Grading System (OGS) proposed by the American Board of Orthodontics. Methods: Nine databases were searched up to October 2016 for prospective/retrospective clinical trials assessing the outcomes of orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances. After duplicate study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment according to the Cochrane guidelines, random-effects meta-analyses of the mean OGS score and treatment duration were performed and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: A total of 34 relevant clinical trials including 6,207 patients (40% male, 60% female; average age, 18.4 years) were identified. The average OGS score after treatment was 27.9 points (95% CI, 25.3–30.6 points), while the average treatment duration was 24.9 months (95% CI, 24.6–25.1 months). There was no significant association between occlusal outcome and treatment duration, while considerable heterogeneity was identified. In addition, orthodontic treatment involving extraction of four premolars appeared to have an important effect on both outcomes and duration of treatment. Finally, only 10 (39%) of the identified studies matched compared groups by initial malocclusion severity, although meta-epidemiological evidence suggested that matching may have significantly influenced their results. Conclusions: The findings from this systematic review suggest that the occlusal outcomes of fixed appliance treatment vary considerably, with no significant association between treatment outcomes and duration. Prospective matched clinical studies that use the OGS tool are needed to compare the effectiveness of orthodontic appliances.

Objective As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sweeps across the world, it is causing widespread concern, fear and stress, all of which are natural and normal reactions to the changing and uncertain situation that everyone finds themselves in.Methods In this general review, we examined the literature about the psychological effects of COVID-19 pandemia. In total 65 papers were reviewed using the Medline computer database. Only publications in English were selected.Results Children are likely to be experiencing worry, anxiety and fear and older people are also those with underlying health conditions, having been identified as more vulnerable to COVID-19, can be extremely frightening and very fear-inducing. China and several other countries took strict isolation measures. Medical staff and affiliated healthcare workers (staff) are under both physical and psychological pressure.Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic is exceptional. Its effect will likely be imprinted on each individual involved. Extensive stressors will emerge or become worsened. Many medical staff workers will be harmfully psychologically affected.

<P>Hydroxyurea (HU) has been used clinically to reduce the frequency of painful crisis and the need for blood transfusion in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. However, the mechanisms underlying such beneficial effects of HU treatment are still not fully understood. Studies have indicated a weak correlation between clinical outcome and molecular markers, and the scientific quest to develop companion biophysical markers have mostly targeted studies of blood properties under hypoxia. Using a common-path interferometric technique, we measure biomechanical andmorphological properties of individual red blood cells in SCD patients as a function of cell density, and investigate the correlation of these biophysical properties with drug intake as well as other clinically measured parameters. Our results show that patient-specific HU effects on the cellular biophysical properties are detectable at normoxia, and that these properties are strongly correlated with the clinically measured mean cellular volume rather than fetal hemoglobin level.</P>
Recent Trends in Standards Related to the Internet of Things and Machine-to-Machine Communications

One of major purposes of these standard technologies is to ensure interoperability between entities from different vendors and enable interworking between various technologies. As interoperability and interworking are essential for machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) for them to achieve their ultimate goal, i.e., things to be connected each other, multiple standards organizations are now working on development M2M/IoT related specifications. This paper reviews the current activities of some of the most relevant standardization bodies in the area of M2M and IoT: third-generation partnership project (3GPP) core and radio network aspects, broadband forum, and oneM2M. The major features and issues being focused upon in these standards bodies are summarized. Finally, some key common trends among the different bodies are identified: a common service layer platform, new technologies mitigating an explosive growth of network traffic, and considerations and efforts related to the development of device management technologies.

The minor polyphenolic and nonpolyphenolic constituents of olive oil were examined, in var-ious doses, against copper ion induced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and werefound, in optimal doses (final concentration, 10 mM or 20 mM), to have remarkable biologi-cal activity, contributing to that previously reported for the major phenolic compounds. Themain phytosterols, b-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol, were found to have 43.8%,37.3%, and 3.4% LDL mean protection (MP) activity, respectively, while free cholesterol ex-hibited 43.2% MP. The triterpenoid derivative compounds, ursolic acid, uvaol, and oleanolicacid, had similar MP activities of 50.5%, 46.8%, and 46.0%, respectively. Tocopherol (Toc) iso-mers exhibited an increasing effect in the following order: a-Toc (33.6%) , b-Toc (36.1%) ,g-Toc (42.9%) , d-Toc (46.0%). The flavonoid polyphenols, quercetin, luteolin, and rutin, ex-hibited the highest activities 46.8%, 49.5%, and 53.7% MP, respectively, comparable to the49.0% MP activity found for oleuropein. These findings indicate the relative independenceof LDL protection activity in regard to structural differences among the involved compounds.A relation to the Mediterranean diet is also demonstrated.

The phytochemical content of acorn (Quercus aegilops) products (nuts and flour) and by products (shells and leaching waters) regarding their content in total phenols, fatty acids, sodium, potassium and calcium was investigated. Antioxidant activity was also examined. Acorn materials presented high total phenol content (up to $47.6{\pm}0.6mg$ gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry material), with a substantial amount remaining after leaching ($11.6{\pm}0.7mg\;GAE/g$ flour), and high DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing activity. Their content in potassium, calcium, oleic and linoleic acids was considered significant. Molecular weight distribution of proteins and peptides was also studied and found between 7 and 45 kDa; only for acorn shells a band > 250 kDa appeared. Leaching parameters (time, material size, material to water ratio, temperature, NaCl presence) significantly affected the phytochemical content of the remained leached material.
