Bypassing Negative Epistasis on Yield in Tomato Imposed by a Domestication Gene

Summary

Selection for inflorescence architecture with improved flower production and yield is common to many domesticated crops. However, tomato inflorescences resemble wild ancestors, and breeders avoided excessive branching because of low fertility. We found branched variants carry mutations in two related transcription factors that were selected independently. One founder mutation enlarged the leaf-like organs on fruits and was selected as fruit size increased during domestication. The other mutation eliminated the flower abscission zone, providing “jointless” fruit stems that reduced fruit dropping and facilitated mechanical harvesting. Stacking both beneficial traits caused undesirable branching and sterility due to epistasis, which breeders overcame with suppressors. However, this suppression restricted the opportunity for productivity gains from weak branching. Exploiting natural and engineered alleles for multiple family members, we achieved a continuum of inflorescence complexity that allowed breeding of higher-yielding hybrids. Characterizing and neutralizing similar cases of negative epistasis could improve productivity in many agricultural organisms.

Video Abstract

Display Omitted

Highlights

Mutations in two MADS-box genes were selected in tomato domestication and breeding

Interaction of the alleles caused extreme inflorescence branching and sterility

Natural and gene-edited MADS-box alleles provide a range of inflorescence types

Dosage from selected alleles allows improved inflorescence architecture and yield

Graphical Abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

LESSONS LEARNED FROM HALDEN PROJECT RESEARCH ON HUMAN SYSTEM INTERFACES
ALF OVE BRASETH,JON KVALEM,CHRISTER NIHLWING,HÅKAN SVENGREN,ØYSTEIN VELAND,LARS HURLEN 한국원자력학회 2009 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.41 No.3
Innovative Human System Interfaces (HSIs) has been a major topic of research of the international Halden Reactor Project (HRP) for many years. Different design concepts have been addressed and prototypes have been implemented and evaluated in the experimental control room facility of HRP. Many of the concepts go far beyond traditional P&ID type displays, and utilize advanced computer graphics and animations. The paper briefly describes some of the concepts, their advantages and disadvantages experienced through evaluations and feedback from users.

Swell description for Bonga offshore Nigeria location
Olugbenga, Akinsanya Akinyemi,Gudmestad, Ove Tobias,Agbakwuru, Jasper Techno-Press 2017 Ocean systems engineering Vol.7 No.4
The ocean environment offshore West Africa is considered to be mild. However, the generated swell from distant North and South Atlantic during austral winter and summer can reach high wave amplitudes with relatively low wave periods or low wave amplitudes with long wave periods, the later can be a crucial scenario to consider when the assessment of vessel resonance is of importance. Most offshore operations, which include offshore drilling, and installation in West Africa, are carried out from floating systems. The response of these systems and performance are governed by characteristics, such as amplitude and frequency of the wave and swell seas. It is therefore important to fully understand the sea conditions offshore Nigeria. This study covers the description of the swell sea offshore Nigeria using Bonga offshore wave measurements collected from the directional wave-rider (DWR), positioned at the Bonga site off the coast of Nigeria.

Electronic and superconducting properties of the binary carbide La2C3
김준성,Reinhard K. Kremer,Ove Jepsen,Arndt Simon 한국물리학회 2006 Current Applied Physics Vol.6 No.5
We have studied the electronic structure and investigated the synthesis conditions to optimize the superconducting properties ofthe binary carbide La2C3. From the electronic structure calculation based on two dierent reported crystal structure determinations, the Fermi level (EF) is found to be located near a local minimum of the density of state (DOS) and the DOS atEFvaries with a slightchange of the structural parameters. These results are consistent with the fact that the superconducting properties of La2C3 are sen-sitive to the preparation conditions and the annealing procedure. By a careful control of the C deciency we have improved thesuperconducting properties and prepare samples showing a sharp superconducting transition ofTc = 13.213.3 K. Critical elds,Hc2 (T), estimated from resistivity and susceptibility measurement are considerably higher than reported previously.
